i know shit about joysticks

Post by captain ahar »

i contacted someone from shoryuken about building me a stick, and he mentioned "octagon restricters" being extra in the build. now i think i can safely assume that it is a part for the joystick, to restrict movement somewhat, as it were, but is it necessary for shmups? it sounds like a "fighting game thing."

thanks everyone.
I have no sig whatsoever.

Octagon restrictors are primarily used for fighting games, some players love to be able to feel each of the 8 directions when they do complex Quarter Circle Turn type moves. I don't like them for shmups. Square gates are standard on sanwas, so just don't order the octagon restrictors.

Yes, the sticks come with square restrictors but people used to American sticks (for fighters) like the octagonal restrictors. The square restrictors are far superior though.

Okay, let me explain. :o There is a plastic restrictor plate installed at the bottom part of the joystick. There is usually a hole on the plate which allow the tip of the bottom end of the joystick to pass through. :? The sharp of this hole restrict the maximum movment of the joystick.

The hole for a 8-ways joystick usually is square in sharp. That means the joystick can be tap further at the diagonals direction. If you make a 360 degree turn while fully tapped, you would found you are actually making a square.

Fighiting game players figure out that they could do some command moves (Dragon Blow, etc.) better in circles instead of U or L sharp movements. So Sanwa have produce a 8-ways restrictor plate with an octagon hole instead of a square one, which can be installed on most Sanwa joystick.

This is the plate of which the custom joystick maker is talking about.

If you are playing shumps only, you should not installed this plate. The hole on the octagon plate is actually larger than those on the square. This would increase the throw of joysticks in the vertical and horizontal direction, which is undesiable in shumps.

If you are playing shumps only, I suggest you to use a Seimitsu LS-32 instead of a Sanwa one.

They have a much smaller dead zone, shorter throw and shorter stick. Excellent for playing shumps. :D
