Beste sticks & buttons for arcade, for shmups

Post by D »

I guess Mortal Kombat (Midway) type joysticks are no good for shmups right?

You need clicky sticks right?

Also are those joysticks with ball round shapes prevered?

What about buttons? I guess not those huge buttons right?
Clicky or non-clicky buttons.

Can someone give a link to the best control gear for arcade cabs.
And in particular shooting games

I'm a Sanwa guy for my console sticks. I like the base -- it's easy (sort of) to install. I'm thinking of making a Seimitsu one though. My supergun uses Seimitsu parts... they're pretty damn nice too. It seems a bit stiffer to me. I can honestly play on either.

my preference:

fat ass buttons that are almost flat to the base and only slightly clicky. you should be able to caress it and it works.

ball top jap style stick that clicks loudly and gives tactile feedback of position as a result. i like a medium throw and reasonably loose. not sure about the looseness at the mo though as my stick is getting a little floppy. i might open it up soon and replace the spring inside just to see if it feels nicer.

i also like slightly sloping bases.

I think the best for shooters is a Seimitsu Joystick + Sanwa Buttons.
Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.

I dont think buttons make much of a difference in shooting games, not as important as fighting games anyway.

Go with a Sanwa stick though imo.

thats sorta vague. in america, thatd probably be just a regular 4 switch teardrop shape happ stick. no clue what sticks are around in europe (i have seen some relatively weird looking ones in pics around here though).

i can only speak for happ vs sanwa. at least initially, its just preference. in the long run, especially for shumps, the japanese sticks are better just because they have less resistance. its physically easier to make quick movements, depending on how you play at least. some of my family and friends just throw the stick around like a heavy bat so it doesnt really matter. im fine with happ sticks though, i can play on them the same way i do on a sanwa...just takes a bit more force.

as for buttons, it hasnt been a huge deal for me. my original control panel had really crappy ass buttons, i have sanwas now (the heavy duty arcade ones or something). theyre nice, but the main difference was that they were new and not all jacked up like the other ones. im a clicky button person myself, mainly for the tactile feel when tapping them. hasnt been a huge issue, because most of my boards are cave, so they have the auto fire option. for the games i do need to tap, the clicky buttons would be nice. sanwa (and i would guess seimitsu) makes a clicky button version, but i havent tried them. if you want that feel with the japanese look thats an option, but i believe they need more depth to mount if thats a concern. happ competitions are another option, but the dimensions are a little off, and colors could be another issue if you want stuff to match.

sort of an extreme option, but you can get a sega cab panel, complete with preinstalled sanwa or seimitsu parts. just screw the whole panel into place onto a cab (which may require massive hacking depending on the cab) or build some other custom setup around it.

I like Sanwa sticks and Happ buttons, although I haven't tried a Seimitsu stick yet. I just prefer the concave, more tactile feel of Happ buttons. In my experience Japanese buttons, although they feel good, don't always let you know whether you've pressed the button or not. It's like the difference between modern keyboards and the old-skool buckling spring type.
