Homemade joystick panel for my cab !pictures inside!

Post by lmn4096 »

Ok I did some improvement on my cabinet :)

but first I would like to thanks every one who helped me with info and specialy Japtor for his great scans :D

Ok I started with drawing all the plans on paper, starting from pictures:

after that started to cut the acryl plate and make some holes...

the acryl plate looks like that after the work:

now from the acryl template I made the wood top of my panel:

then glue all the wood plate together:
Image

ok after all the plates are well glued I cut all with my jigsaw (such thickness was the limit for the blade)
Image

finaly drill some holes in it, and break the angles with a cool tools that turn at 30'000 t/min .... very noisy for the neighbors

And finaly after some good paint (made by my wife) and placing some pictures in it. here it is !!

and here you can see in detail the joystick panel:

It was made of multiple wood layer, sticked together.

VERY awesome! Great work!

I wanted to make something like that, but I didn't have a reamer big enough to drill the holes in acryl or whatever, I only had a scraping bit that would drill wood...

Jesus, that's beautiful. If I ever need one custom made, I'll know who to ask if you're willing to do one. ;)

Thank you for all your comments. :)

it was a hard and long work, it took me around 3 months. and to do all inside my living room was quite difficult (at least for my wife).

Edit:
when I say 3 month it's time for the full cabinet and the joystick panel.

I'm trying to make a panel myself at the moment - yours looks much better! How did you make the art to put under the plastic surface? That's my biggest problem right now.

EDIT: also - what did you use for the plastic surface? I tried to use 2mm plexi, but it cracked in multiple places when I was using the hole cutter on it (actually due to the guide bit rather than the hole cutter itself - DOH).

I did try with a 2mm plexi but it was too weak and broke too easly.
so I decided to go with a 3mm Acryl-plexi.

to do the art under the plexi is very easy. just place some nice color print on a cutter mate then, place over your print, the acryl plate (already cut and drilled) and use a sharp cutter to take a part in each holes then cut all around the plexy. And voila :D

That's an excellent job and having a little window to put the instruction sticker under...incredible! If only I had a tool that would let me drill out holes big enough for buttons, maybe I could spruce up mine.
