Gradius V

Post by howmuchkeefe »

My brand new slimline PS2 makes horrible noises every time I play Gradius V. It doesn't do this with the other CD based games I own, like Castle Shikigami 2 and Contra: Shattered Soldier. Is there something I can do about this problem?

Is Gradius killing my PS2? I bought the slimline because my old PS2 could no longer play CD based games.

I've been fighting the temptation to grab myself a Japanese PS2 for some time now. Is Gradius V available on DVD format in Japan, or are Japanese PS2s able to play CD format games without breaking themselves?

Thanks for your time

Why Konami didn't put Gradius V on a DVD instead is beyond me, but my Slim PS2 makes funny noises too. I think it just how Konami programmed the game. Check to see if there are any scratches or scuffs on the CD, that could do it.

It's spotless. All of my games are... I take very good care of them. :P

Maybe it is how they programmed the game. Maybe I'm hearing it stream or something... it's scary, though. I can't help but think that nasty things are happening to my PS2.

For me, if my PS2 (not slimline, but fat) makes noises, that means it's WORKING...thank your lucky stars.

My JPS2 also runs louder when playing CD games as opposed to DVD ones...I think all of 'em do that.

I'm pretty sure it's supposed to sound louder with CD based games, since it's physically spinning the disc faster. I can't remember exact numbers, but I do know that the PS2 spins DVDs at 2x, whereas to keep up with that, a CD would have to be spinning around 12x.

That's a lot faster, and bound to create some noise...just listen to your PC CD drive when installing a game sometime - mine sounds a bit like a vacuum cleaner

CD's are cheaper to manufacture than DVD's, and the file size didn't exceed 700 MB.

Ah, Vagrant Story... the game single-handedly responsible for killing my first PSone. The amount of constant streaming in that one was unbelievable. I guess GTA San Andreas makes a good PS2 counterpart to it.

Yeah, hard to argue with economics.

..but Konami released Neo Contra on DVD! NEO CONTRA.

Someone out there needs to be smacked repeatedly.

That was due to all the CG movies Neo Contra included.
