With three individual trimpots it`s hardly possible to get good white level. Your scanlines will always have an unwanted color effect. We exclude three trimpots from the beginning of the project. Sure, with three trimpots its much more cheaper to produce, perhaps this is the reason why all the slg3000 clones go with this solution.

Very cool.

I've been talking to a rep from the company that sells the RetroVGA2 and he told me they had a few on hand he could sell.

Thanks for the FYI Fudoh, I should brush up on more literature before I speak lol - SLG3000 is pretty much the same.

The problem is that there's only one source for the SLG3000 and price is about 50.00 Euros and they charge you another 18 Euro for a cheap casing that should be included (and cost no more than 5 Euros) that's not including shipping to USA..
That's a slap in the face to consumers like me, charging people half the price of the actual unit for a plastic casing that should be sold with the unit.
If that's the case then why not sell the naked board for cheaper?
Clone or not - consumers will buy what works the same for less.

You guys made me feel much more confident with my decision and appreciate all the help!

Naaa, that`s not true. My price for the SLG3000 is 48.95€ and currently I`ve a price cut of 10%

Shipping to US is only 7€ and about 1 week shipping time. I ship with express and tracking. So I think there should be no complaints about shipping prices.

My enclosure is three layered and has engravings and is laser cut. So all the edges are clean. So the design is much more elaborated and superior to simple cnc cut plexi. Please take a closer look at the enclosure and the differences.

Second Bruno charges 20USD for shipping without tracking. And sure it`s more cheaper to rebuild stuff than to develop a complete product.

Oh, really? Dude, by talking like that you really sound like a car salesman (like the NOT honest type)!

Anyways, shipping from Brazil to any place in the globe is around US$17.00 and it DOES INCLUDE tracking code.

Oh, and the plexy we use is laser cut.

Not sufficient? Grab the schematics and make (or ask a friend) your own board without paying me a dime! Yes, that's correct! RetroVGA is Open Hardware!

Good luck with your business!

Oh, and bencao74, you forgot to add to your car salesman speech that your SLG works ONLY for the following resolutions:

640x480@60Hz
1024x768@60Hz

That makes your SLG the weakest (and the most expensive) in the market. All the other alternatives are cheaper and supports EVERY VGA resolution.

Oh, but you've got 3 pieces of plexi and an expensive trimpot, right?

SLG3000 definitely works at more than those two resolutions, or are you referring to the double width switch on yours which would make the scanlines more authentic on, say, 720p resolution? I'm still not sure they'd line up properly then but sometimes a pseudo scanline effect can be fun anyway.
This device includes 3 individual trimpots so you can adjust scanlines intensity
Why would you need three? That sounds needlessly fiddly, especially for someone like me that's always messing with that setting.

No. I'm saying that SLG3000 doesn't work over any VGA signal different than the ones I mentioned. That hasn't anything to do with another feature SLG3K lacks, that is scanlines thickness.

Technically the circuit needs three. bencao74 fancy trimpot is actually 3 trimpots "glued together" as one.

And I'm not here to discuss which one is best or worse, anyone buy whatever they want. I don't actually run a virtual shop anymore (I have a friend making the products and selling the stuff now, I don't get any participation on this), so I don't care.

But I just think that lying in order to lure customers is a very low move.

The double width scanlines only line up "perfect" with a 960p resolution. On a 720p output you only get 180 scanlines (while you should get 240).

I can assure you that it does, because I own one and I've tried it, there are screenshots of me running Scott Pilgrim at 720p with SLG3000 in this very thread, though the scanlines of course do not align properly as they should (nor would they with your version), but the effect can still be pleasing in some games.

Lucky you for getting negative polarity on VSYNC on that resolution. It's the only reason why it worked on SLG3K. The majority of VGA resolutions has positive VSYNC polarity, making SLG3K useless for them.

here is the list of supported resolutions

Resolution DIP4 DIP5 Effect
640 x480 OFF ON 1,3,5 usw ausgetastet
ON OFF 2,4,6 usw ausgetastet
600 x 800 OFF OFF 1,3,5 usw ausgetastet
1024 x768 OFF ON 1,3,5 usw ausgetastet
ON OFF 2,4,6 usw ausgetastet
1280 x 800 OFF ON 1,3,5 usw ausgetastet
ON OFF 2,4,6 usw ausgetastet
1280 x 1024 OFF OFF 1,3,5 usw ausgetastet
1600 x 1200 OFF OFF 1,3,5 usw ausgetastet

We stopped then. SailorSat made test with 2K something. bootsector : nice work - I`m glad that the SLG3000 concept is still strong enough for similar ideas or projects. Perhaps it`s time to make something new like emulation for shadow mask. For SLG3000 performance just go through this thread and take a look at the pics. I`m sure that your project deserves it`s own thread.

I don't quite understand what I need to do to make the SLG3000 work with those higher resolutions. For example, could you tell me what I need to do to get my SLG3000 to work with 1280x1024 resolution? Thank you.

I keep asking myself the question...... why on earth would anyone want to overlay scanlines to anything higher than 480 lines. I'll probably get the same reply as before.

honestly, the above table was only a stress test that was made during the development. For me the most important is a good scanline emulation, thus I always recommend to use 480 lines. I`ve go through my development mails with winni and fudoh from 2010. Anyone interested in pics of the first breadboard designs?

The settings below work wonderfully with everything I've tried (on a 1920x1080p screen). Pixel perfect scanlines. Although the curvature won't be to everyone's taste - I was seeing if I could get an image that looked like a VGA CRT with 15khz scanlines, and I think I've succeeded:

Just like to share that I got in an HDFury gamer today and managed to get both my PS3 and Xbox 360 set to 480P to run through the slg3000 with no issues. I got a mixed message from reading from this thread: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.ph ... 53#p744653 that specified that the slg3000 would not work with the HDFury gamer without the use of an rgb interface to get a negative sync from the HDFury gamer.

My setup as follows:
PS3 Slim & Xbox 360 --> HDMI Manual Switch --> HDFury Gamer --> Vga Switch --> slg3000 (dipswitch 4 on, dipswitch 5 off) --> Dell u2211h Monitor

HDMI Switch: http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2
Vga Switch: http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2

nice update, thanks !

Could you try the HDF directly connected to a console ? Your VGA switch wouldn't change the polarity, but in theory the HDMI switch could if the HDF just converts the existing polarity...
