Is it possible to add SP/DIF to a Dreamcast?

Post by Specineff »

I am not sure if I read it right on a hardware forum a couple of years ago. Matt, you are the hardware Know-it-All around here. Is there a way to add a digital audio to a DC? That would make me and my amplifier so very very happy.

Thanks.

Digital audio is not supported by the Dreamcast. Unless you were wanting do some sort of external analog convertsion ($$).

Sorry, I meant to say digital audio out. There must be a D/A converter inside of the system, and the trick is catching that part and converting it to SP/DIF. But perhaps is more of a pain than I thought.

The only way I could think that it would work would be to intercept the audio signal before it hit the D/A converter at the output, but that would require some really intricate soldering. Even then you're not guaranteed that it would be a usable form. Probably far more effort than it would be worth.
