Replacing save batteries on an NES cart

Post by Andi »

I have some NES cartridges that will lose all my data whenever I shut them off. I assume this is because the save battery has died. Is there a way to replace these batteries easily (with little risk of damaging the cartrdige and its contents)? What type of battery does it use?

Thanks a lot.

Changing the battery in an NES game involves desoldering the original battery, replacing it with an identical type (usually with a Lithium CR2032 battery), and soldering that down.

First of all, if you don't know how to solder, you may first want to look at these websites that give basic instructions on how to solder:
http://www.epemag.wimborne.co.uk/solderfaq.htm
http://www.aaroncake.net/electronics/solder.htm

Next, the following website gives you detailed step-by-step instructions on how to do it: http://www.the9thkey.com/games/Nesbatt.htm

Here are two other sites to help you out:
This first one offers a solderless solution: http://www.planetnintendo.com/thewarpzone/battery.html
You can also try this replacement that replaces the standard CR2032 battery with two AAA batteries: http://www.namakoteam.com/battery.html

Hope this helps.
