are there versions of mame that work on the dreamcast well?

Not really. You're better off just sticking with Nester on the emulation front.

there's neogeo on the DC and offcourse Bleemcast which runs most 3D race and flight sim PS1 games well! G-Darius/Ray Storm works. Ridge Racer, etc.
Ace Combat 3, but to name a few. And these games look way better on Sega Hardware

It's a NES emulator adapted for the DC. It works pretty well.
