Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Be a shame to add all that input lag though, I think a DVDO scaler would be better.Konsolkongen wrote:For owners of Panasonic TVs I guess a(n expensive) solution could be to use a HDfury to convert the HDMI to VGA and then run that through a Gefen VGA to DVI scaler, which does really nice 480p scaling. That's probably what I'll do with this thing, once I get it, and I find a used Panasonic plasma that isn't ruined by burn-in

Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Is it much different in terms of lag? Not that I have any experience, but Fudoh's page suggests the Gefen is only slightly slower than a DVDO, and it was stated here recently there is no lag from the HDFury.
I'm interested in the best way to get analog VGA output here as well as I'd be interested in potentially using this with a 31kHz-only arcade monitor.

Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
If you buy the version with DVI Out, you could buy a DVI-D to HDMI Adapter and then connect that to an HDFury or HDFury clone. If you buy the pre-order version, you could simply connect directly to an HDFury type device.RetroGame❤ wrote:...or maybe it has to be something more like this?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812400402
Quoting Fudoh's advice from This thread, a $30 chinese clone would probably do the job nicely.
That converter you linked may work nicely, but I have no clue as to the quality of the device so I cannot say for sure.

Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Should work fine... StarTech makes solid hardware, and I ordered the complete version with DVI-D out, so this should be one of the cheaper straightforward solutions. Still, I wonder what Marqs thinks... Marqs?P1kas wrote:That converter you linked may work nicely, but I have no clue as to the quality of the device so I cannot say for sure.
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Form complete. Really looking forward to it. HDMI-VGA adapters are dirt cheap and work really well in my experience.

Hopefully this stays around for a good number of years so I can buy it when I'm no longer a college student. Good luck with the first run marqs, sounds like you'll easily hit the first 50!

Pre-order done!
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Definitely don't order one of those! The reviews are entertaining though Startech adapter you linked should work great or any cheap ones of those type. I've used them before with no issues.RetroGame❤ wrote:What about this then..? DVI-D to VGA: http://www.amazon.com/Male-DVI-D-Female ... B007EA48MAP1kas wrote:Doubt it. Those adapters are for DVI-I(Carries analog signal) to D-Sub. This device would output a digital signal through DVI-D. Unless of course marqs implements some kind of analog output.
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
I clocked it at 30ms with Leo's lag tester, compared to 6ms with the DVDO, with the caveat that the DVDO gets much more lag with systems with off-spec refresh rates (though apparently the VP50, 30 etc do not).cfx wrote:Is it much different in terms of lag? Fudoh wrote:480p output should work on all displays. 720p likely on many PC monitors, but hardly on any TVs. 480p from this one is rather close to the FM's 720p already.
Can we still test if 720p will work with the modeline from last year? Seems to work perfectly fine on my Sony TV.marqs wrote:Code: Select all

Edit: Tested again with Linux. It doesn't work.

Are there going to be problems with not being active on this forum? You asked for a nick, which I provided, but I don't think I've ever posted here.
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Will the current hardware layout be identical to the final one?
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Could use longer spacers and a slot for the toggle switch?marqs wrote:That's true, but there's noy many options. Ideally the whole system would be in a metallic case like 80s electronics, but that's way out of scope for a DIY project. A small amount of glue holds the display quite firmly in position so it shouldn't get detached easily by accident, but of course packaging must be done carefully.Unseen wrote:I'm slightly worried about the vertical LCD - to me it seems to be a likely point of failure, either by shearing it off when force is applied from behind or breaking it when the converter is packed away in a tight space and pressure is applied to the side.
Is that an on-off switch, it's not noted on the plan view?
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
I was wondering today if the whole thing couldn't be designed to fit in a standard 1U mini-PC rack-mount case. You can pick these up for £20 or so, of course then you'd need to design backplates etc... so lets get the existing one out of the door first before entertaining such notions

Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
I was about to make a separate thread on asking about the XRGB units, but this thing looks far more interesting. How much better does this thing perform compared to the FrameMeister & XRGB-3 on down? I want something for PS2 & Xbox and have a low-lag LG 24gm77 gaming monitor. I was considering picking up one of the Micomsoft boxes, but I may just wait for these.
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Yes, you can still use that to test whether linetripled modes would work. Interesting to hear that it's accepted by a Sony TV - which model is that? It'd be awesome if their new low-latency TVs would support modes like that.blizzz wrote:Modeline "1280x720_custom" 80.4078 1280 1370 1495 1705 720 732 741 786 -hsync -vsync

No problem, it's just for convenience.hunter291 wrote:Are there going to be problems with not being active on this forum? You asked for a nick, which I provided, but I don't think I've ever posted here.
Aside from DVI replacing HDMI in non-DIY version, the remaining changes will be mostly aesthetical.xadox wrote:Will the current hardware layout be identical to the final one?
The current height of the spacers matches the height of input video connectors, so top plexiglass keeps them firmly in place when swapping cables. It's the power switch as you suspected.lev11 wrote:Could use longer spacers and a slot for the toggle switch?

Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Very interested in this, pre-ordered one.

It's an older model, Sony KDL-40EX650.marqs wrote:Yes, you can still use that to test whether linetripled modes would work. Interesting to hear that it's accepted by a Sony TV - which model is that? It'd be awesome if their new low-latency TVs would support modes like that.

Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
30ms of lag, I already answered that above I can confirm HD Fury 2 is lag free though, at least that's what Leo's tester says.

Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
I get what you are saying. But the DVDO Edge does craptastic 480p to 1080p scaling. Adding so much ringing destroys the purpose of this thing in the first place :pBuckoA51 wrote: Be a shame to add all that input lag though, I think a DVDO scaler would be better.
I'm joking, I know most people doesn't mind. But I wouldn't like it
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Craptastic is way off the mark, it's hardly cutting edge and indeed worse than what many modern TVs do, but honestly I did side by side comparison of DVDO and Gefen's scaling and most people couldn't tell the difference. Add scanlines in and the DVDO's scaling is absolutely fine.
I'd take less lag over less ringing any day anyway.

Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Preordered a complete unit (TQFP soldering is the worst...)
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
Preordered a complete one... I'm thinking of preordering the diy for having also an hdmi version... Are very high soldering skills needed?
I'm so pumped to try this!

Pre ordered ^^
Re: DIY video digitizer & scandoubler
I believe the both the DIY kits and the complete units of the first batch will have HDMI ports.danikei wrote:Preordered a complete one... I'm thinking of preordering the diy for having also an hdmi version
EDIT:
Seems I was misinformed. As you said, DIY kits will include HDMI ports while complete units will have DVI ports.
