480p on a Sony BVM-A24E1WU

Post by revertedlogic »

Hey guys, first time poster here. I recently acquired a BVM-A24E1WU, and while everything on it looks absolutely phenomenal, there is one problem, which is that it is confused by 480p sources. 480i, 720p, and 1080i all work fine. But when I use 480p, suddenly the screen goes black and there is no signal detected. I don't have the RGB/Component card, just the SDI cards, which I used component to hdmi to sdi for. I've tried pretty much every setting and input, any ideas?

SDI doesn't support 480p. While it might be technically possible (I think it's part of some extended SDI specs), it's not working on any of the Sony monitors.

I would say a GOOD 480p to 720p scaler is your best bet. Should still look awesome.

Thanks dude. It's weird that the range between 480i to 1080i would be supported, but excludes 480p. Any suggestions for an upscaler?

That very much depends on your source systems (component, VGA, HDMI?). I think your HDMI to SDI converts converts to 4:2:2 anyway (right?), so there's no point in going for a 4:4:4 processor.

Its due to strict standards, and which year they were created.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_digital_interface

SMPTE 259M - 1989 = 480i , 576i
SMPTE 292M - 1998 = 720p , 1080i

So the monitor supports these 2 input standards and thats it, anything else is unable to be decoded

the monitor would need to have:

SMPTE 344M - 2000 = 480p , 576p

for it to accept 480p over SDI, I've not been able to find any of the Sony CRT BVM/PVM input cards that support 344M

If you look on Pages 60,61 of the manual, you'll see the table of accepted resolutions supported

The BKM-68x card will allow 480p via analogue component (smpte 293M)

For 480p sources I am using Xbox, PS2, and Wii with component.

And thank you h1ghju1ce, that makes sense. Wish I had the component card, but that'll be even harder to find than the BVM was haha.
