sikraiken posted this elsewhere, it really ought to be here:

Taito

R=- -Kiki Kaikai
R=score & name & link R=9.999.990 & aroto_ari & starts at 51:32 https://freshlive.tv/taito_hey/71225

Some 13 hours (!) of looping Kiki Kaikai. :shock:

Does anyone know whether videos exist for these games/achievements?

Eight Forces 2-ALL
Game Tengoku 2-ALL
The Great Ragtime Show 1-ALL/2-ALL

I can't find anything for the latter, not even a basic clear. It's an enjoyable game when you actually play the shmup, once you're forced into the moon-gravity poor man's Metal Slug sections, though, all bets are off. :?

That game is pretty easy once you have permanent lightning mode from 30hz autofire. And for those on-foot sections, there's a classic trick you can do. Get a vehicle and enter and exit it. You have a bunch of invincibility frames when entering and exiting vehicles. I think the game is much more fun when playing without 30hz the lightning though.

I have my old run on great ragtime show. 1st loop complete, dead in 2-3. Played with autofire 15/s. For this game is necessary a double frequency autofire.

Thanks for the hints, guys, especially regarding the invincibility frames! I've only played a little bit so far, the stage where you enter a zeppelin as the little guy where there's so much lag that autofire starts to completely fail was where I put the game away. Maybe I ought to give it another try. Are you really supposed to play this game with just two lives total, by the way? Seems like a remarkable violation of conventions.

Due to the power of the lightning, especially if you have two different buttons with different autofire rates, I think 2 lives is fine. So many of the sections become easy because of that damn lightning attack. The real difficulty is the game length in my opinion. I think A full run of the game could take up to 2 hours counting all the lag from the lightning...

Also, the score is 87.593.400, not 87.583.400.

I've decided to collocate a selected list of great runs for console games - I wholly understand that you're not interested in adding those together with arcade games, I even support the notion on the whole (too many unremarkable games/not much to show in terms of scoring/an abundant amount of them have broken scoring systems, even/etc.), but there are a handful of specimens and videos that I feel are spectacular to watch for one reason or another. I don't think it warrants its own topic, so I'll just list them here, feel free to ignore the post (or maybe include a link to it somewhere in the first post?), I'm just adding it for completion's sake. The list is abrasively subjective, I've only picked a handful of remarkable games, and only one run per game. Doesn't necessarily have to be geared towards scoring, though.

Famicom/NES

R=- -Zanac
R=score & name & link & notes R=50.587.620 & bubufubu & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T90G1QrsA8A & no leeching

Explanation: Zanac is without a doubt among the very best shooters on the system, it does suffer from infinite milking via warp, unfortunately. bubufubu even uploaded a run where he gets the maximum score, that one is simply not entertaining to watch on amount of the excessive milking. This run, however, perfectly encapsulates how Zanac should be played: he triggers every secret in the book, doesn't lose a single life, hence, he is in perfect control the entire time. You can lucidly tell he spent a lot of time with this game (he even has his first clears and such uploaded which are several years older and not nearly as refined), the result is very well worth it.

PC Engine (HuCard/CD)

R=- -Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
R=score & name & link & notes R=1.250.430 & YMN & http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm11786151 & playing as Charotte, NMNB

Explanation: expert run of the deepest 16-bit shooter. Beating the game without dying and bombing in and of itself is an impressive achievement, but the player also earns a ton of points by using the charge attack appropriately. While it might be theoretically possible to score a tiny bit better in the final stages, this run is menacingly optimized already and was one of the main reasons I've crafted this little enumeration. It's a bit comparable to playing a console Rayforce, even down to some of the visuals.

R=- -Nexzr
R=score & name & link & notes R=2.477.730 & Succulla & part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxjsc2ROm1Y part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XOf4NCNYDxQ part 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUeYrGrwaUg part 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28roVd83p1o part 5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPVCYLS4yfo part 6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJp6qQK3eyE & Hideeze difficulty, no miss

Explanation: stylish & fluent run for a title that very well may be the perfect epitome of the "space shooter" from that era. Yet another game not horribly well-suited to function for scoring thanks to massive checkpoint milking and potentially endless boss leeching, the core game play works splendid on the other hand. The highest difficulty setting adds a respectable amount of suicide bullets and adds belligerence to the bosses, thus facilitating iremesque strategies in order to overcome the travails.

R=- -Rayxanber II
R=score & name & link & notes R=354.300 & MrPaloma666 & part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jtpb9f8tWg part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmHBOTUpMEY part 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyKk8ySOE2I part 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57KOMZvHxJI part 5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=munV6Iv9Gqc part 6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLRZeqKYhM0 & no miss

Explanation: splendid run of a tough game. As anyone who has played it will be able to attest, this is certainly one of the hardest console-exclusives out there. The player found superb boss quick kills (which made my life considerably easier when striving for the clear myself) and applies utmost aggressivity throughout the entire run which is extremely satisfying to watch.

R=- -Violent Soldier
R=score & name & link & notes R=578.400 & Kollision & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtF4qJd570c &

Explanation: as I've mentioned above, this is a subjective list. While there is no intricate scoring to be found in this game, I deem the last two stages in it to be so extraordinarily good that it deserves to be listed somewhere in spite of the uninspired, plodding beginning. Kollision was the first one to find practicable solutions for some of the sections (there was one non-TAS clear video afore which had frankly terrible strategies) for a wider audience to see, he also (involuntarily) demonstrates the beauty of checkpoint recoveries in said sections.

Mega Drive/Genesis

R=- -Granada
R=score & name & link & notes R=2.607.285 & Enhasa & part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3B3iPMKPyIg part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0sLZbhUI8Q part 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRW7I8jW_wQ & Mania difficulty, manually tallying the score

Explanation: omitted it at first by virtue of its multi-directional nature, but I'll be damned not to list it. Outstanding execution from Enhasa throughout the entire run, perfect timing when it comes to sacrificing lives for the highest bonus on the most lucrative stages, rapid, unrelenting pace from beginning to end. Mayhap more reminiscent of a speed run, that's not a negative whatsoever, only a compliment.

R=- -Raiden Densetsu/Trad
R=score & name & link & notes R=1.938.350 & pegboy & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9thtumEZSI & Hard difficulty, includes Special Stage

Explanation: another pioneer run of sorts. As far as I know, pegboy's run is the only one that shows how to beat the infamous additional stage in this particular port (TAS videos notwithstanding). His approach both combines a lot of creativity and calculated analysis and turns an ordeal which is otherwise a veritable nightmare into a challenging yet doable task. It should go without saying that you ought to watch pegboy's other console runs as well, we'll come back for another one later, actually.

R=- -Undeadline
R=score & name & link & notes R=3.078.900 & UGO & part 1 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xentnz part 2 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xensqt part 3 http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xenqqk & Crazy difficulty, no miss, no autofire, no magic

Explanation: the ideal way to tackle what I consider to be the most essential 16-bit shooter. All the parameters are maxed out, everything is handled beautifully nonetheless. As with some other titles, Undeadline also suffers from a scoring issue, that doesn't detract from its colossal style in the slightest. Like with pegboy, you really want to check out UGO's channel if you happen to enjoy 16-bit shooters, he also uploaded a 1LC of Eliminate Down and Gaiares on their hardest settings as well as a clear of the infamous turd Battle Squadron.

Super Famicom/SNES

R=- -BioMetal
R=score & name & link & notes R=988.600 & ikagin & part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TBR2MQ87nI part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQh-Omc3E34 & GAM/shield not used

Explanation: BioMetal revolves around its GAM (both figuratively and inversely literally) - ikagin managed to put together a splendid run without using the core mechanic of the game by dint of stellar strategizing and execution. Very entertaining to watch as well as to try for yourself. Also important to note is that he fortunately plays the SFC version so that we can enjoy the sublime music!

R=- -R-Type III
R=score & name & link & notes R=1.379.580 & pegboy & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh73ngqxttE & 2-ALL, using Shadow Force

Explanation: I know that pegboy remarked himself he deems a 2-ALL of Super R-Type on the highest difficulty to be tremendously more difficult - a statement I've no difficulties believing -, but the purpose of this list is to show great console games, and while R-Type III comfortably belongs here, Super R-Type definitely does not. R-Type III has the best second loop in any 16-bit shooter as far as I'm concerned, Irem treated it with as much respect as the counterpart in their venerable arcade games. While easier than some of their excruciatingly tough arcade second loops, R-Type III is still a respectable challenge with demanding checkpoints and classic boss fights which require memorization as well as some quick on-the-fly thinking.

PS1/PSX

R=- -Einhänder
R=score & name & link & notes R=35.887.830 & AstraeaFGAmk2 & part 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viRgo-zbUts part 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFA7L-hYEk4 part 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1He-EFDgS4 part 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkzFTMMT57s part 5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydsxG63WJzc part 6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHOk6zTX13A part 7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uV2_le-3Ts & Japanese version, Hard difficulty, Endymion FRS Mk.II, no starting gun pod, all S bonuses, every evaluation is an S, Jesus Christ almighty

Explanation: the run to watch if you want to weep in awe. Not only is this a virtually perfect run in every way that counts, the player also takes the opportunity to deploy some flashy and incredibly risky stunts for entertainment alone, such as picking up a Mosquito to perform a little flourish at the end of stage 4 and killing both the stage 6 boss and Hyperion with the manipulator (!) even if it cost him quite a few points. Completely unbelievable familiarity with the game as well as astounding skills.

R=- -Harmful Park
R=score & name & link & notes R=13.131.111 & CStarFlare & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqEDIVTEa9o & Normal difficulty

Explanation: the polar opposite of most games listed here. Harmful Park is entirely about scoring since sheer survival is laughably easy. CStarFlare plays this like your typical Raizing game, constantly sacrifing lives in order to gain more bombs which allows him to earn big multipliers for more extends, thus enabling him to administer more lives for the higher scoring good etc. pp. Entirely different than most other videos here, but just as great to watch.

R=- -R-Type Delta
R=score & name & link & notes R=1.283.439 & ben.shinobi & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76m0HQ75KrM & using R13

Explanation: utterly fantastic run, my personal favourite alongside the Einhänder one from above. Mind-boggling accuracy and finesse when it comes to optimizing points with the pod, it is much, much harder than it looks. ben.shinobi waits for last possible moments to kill bosses before their time-outs, never shoots when he doesn't have to, quickly sacrifices his two lives for perfect leeching, it's marvelous. He even laments in the comment section that this game doesn't get the recognition it deserves on account of being a console game - fortuitous for us that it didn't stop ben.shinobi from crafting this video.

A few games I've not included:

- Gradius Gaiden/Gradius V: there is one partial run on nicovideo where you can see a player get 10m in Gaiden, it's marred by annoying commentary, though. Not entirely sure what to pick for V, but you can't go wrong with pegboy with either one of these games.

- Jikkyo Oshaberi Parodius: I did manage to find a difficulty 8 1LC run from a user by the name of tooawefullydifferent, I wasn't 100% sure whether it is TAS or not. 95% sure it's legit, but better safe than sorry.

- Kiaidan 00: surprisingly nasty on the highest difficulty, there is a great run on nicovideo that shows how to deal with it. I didn't put it here because I don't think the quality of the game quite deserves it, otherwise it'd be silly not to also mention pegboy's Strike Gunner S.T.G or Phalanx video, the aforementioned Super R-Type 2-ALL etc.

- Super Aleste: wasn't sure which one to pick between pegboy's run, Yace's various ones with different goals or mayhap even Succulla's.

- Thunder Force IV: couldn't find anything suitable for Mania (without commentary) on short notice.

Edit for Granada and Nexzr.

Hello, to you all. I have known about this site for years but never got around to taking a deeper look.

About two months ago, I discovered that my most recent run of 1941 (Arcade) had been listed on here. It should be obvious to anyone who cared to watch it that I used auto-fire. There's a notice that pops up at the bottom of the screen, indicating my toggling of the feature. Somewhere on this site, there's a listing for a score of 15,000,000 (insane, by the way) and it does mention that auto-fire was used for that run. Nevertheless, I wanted to let you guys know in case it's a problem for anyone on here. I have never considered myself a great player (or any of my scores to be official records) but I am proud of my movement and strategy during that run. There's certainly room for loads of improvement but I put in a good deal of time and really pushed myself to get 12 million. It took quite a few attempts and I almost missed out on that beautiful bonus at the end because of a few mistakes against Gotha. Thankfully, I held on.

1941 is one of my favorite games and my selection as the most entertaining of the 194x series. Had it not been for a high score competition on AtariAge, I might never have learned of its existence. You might say I'm still a good deal behind on my knowledge of great games in this genre. Thanks to sites like this and others, I have had some help in catching up a bit.

Shout-outs to both Seahawk0027 and PeriklesSTG. I'm a fan of you both. Seahawk's 1941 videos were a big help to me and he seems, overall, to be fantastic at shooters. I actually sent him a message on YouTube a while back asking to discuss the game, but never heard back. Perikles, I learned of your YouTube channel later on and was immediately impressed with your gameplay as well as your descriptions. I look forward to reading them as much as watching you play. I'll try to keep my ass-kissing to a minimum here, but they are very unique. Your respect for spelling & grammar as well as your high-level vocabulary are all very appealing to me. You seem to be a wordsmith and there's an eloquence there that seems to be all your own, so cheers on that. Thanks for deciding to share my runs of 1941 and Zanac with this community. I'm also happy to find that you are aware of Ben Shinobi. He's quite an amazing player, too. I'm genuinely in awe of players like you, Ben, and Seahawk. You guys are a treat to watch and often make it look so easy.

Another side note to Perikles: I did die in that run of Zanac. Five times at the end, if memory serves. I was employing a little known strategy on the 3rd form of the final boss to secure a ton of points. It's...kinda hard to execute without dying, at least for me. Nevertheless, I appreciate your compliments and am grateful that you appreciate the way I play it. Zanac (NES) might be my most favorite shooter. I've put a ton of hours into it over the years. That max score run took me a bit longer than I thought it would. Over 12 hours, I believe! But that was nothing compared to what I put myself through to max out Legendary Wings (NES). 75 hours, with the first 44 coming in consecutive fashion. A three hour "nap" due to exhaustion and then another 28 in a row to see all those 9s. Not fun to watch, I know. They were just a couple of personal goals that I had talked about for years and finally got around to doing. At some point, I'd like to go for a better score on Zanac. Somewhere in the range of 80-90 million, sans warp milking.

I'd also like to mention two other games: Dragon Spirit and Super Aleste. The former is highly enjoyable on three different platforms (Arcade, PC Engine, 8-bit). The Arcade version is significantly more difficult. I probably prefer the PC Engine version because of how well the soundtrack shines and the potential for points. The music is terrific on all three incarnations, though. Fantastic graphics, effects, and sounds in Super Aleste.
So pleasant to look at & play, but it can be overwhelming on the higher difficulty settings. Personally, I can't handle the seemingly necessary speed required to master it but I still have a great appreciation for the game. The selection of weaponry goes a long way in increasing the replay value, too.

Keep up the good work of spreading your love for shooters, guys. Cheers.

Autofire shouldn't be a problem unless it's mistakenly labeled as a non-autofire run (which isn't the case here). Many of the replays here use autofire.

First of all, let me thank you for posting your beautiful replay on youtube and show us your strategies.

There are no separate world rankings for scores with and without autofire for 1941, which results in everyone making use of autofire. Therefore, an additional notice does not seem necessary. The world record is 15,070,400 btw.

He's done it. Owarabi got the counterstop in Same³.

12 loops, zero lives left. Run starts at 18:22 (he died in 1-4 so he reset). Final loop starts at 7:34:06.

Apparently the end-of-loop bonus maxes out at 10 million. Who knew!

Thank you very much! I've had a few gregarious acclamations on that topic, I'm always feeling august when people enjoy my maunderings. Truth be told, a few games were more profit-yielding as a writing exercise than they were delectable as games, such are the vicissitudes of this genre!

He's done it. Owarabi got the counterstop in Same³.

12 loops, zero lives left. Run starts at 18:22 (he died in 1-4 so he reset). Final loop starts at 7:34:06.

Apparently the end-of-loop bonus maxes out at 10 million. Who knew!
Here's the highlight, since the link above is of a past broadcast which will expire: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/247513320

Various new replays have been found, including a very near-WR Much Pork Ikuo run, netting a terrific 240mil. Check it out!

Man, don't do that to me, I almost had a heart attack. That Ikuo run has been available since 2007, but it definitely should've been added to the list already. I also have a replay of a better stage 3 by the same player if anyone wants it.

While it was floating around for quite some time, it was never uploaded to youtube (or taken down again?). So this upload is very important.

Is there some reason this Koyori replay wasn't put up? http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm24635954 I was looking for it earlier but it's not on the main list so I had to dig through random posts in this thread to find it.

I'm not sure if any of you will be interested in it, but I got a decent score today on "1943: The Battle of Midway" (NES port).

It was a fairly tough challenge. The score is still below the top spot on Twin Galaxies, but I'm proud of it.

Auto-fire was not used during this run. My thumb survived. -_-

Hope you guys enjoy it! Cheers!
