I'm having trouble determining a pattern for which route you take in Stage 3 in Phalanx (SFC/SNES) after the "wall" midboss.
Sometimes I have to redo the first half of the stage a second time, sometimes I proceed straight to the second half, and sometimes I get the second half of the stage at double the speed, as a kind of high-speed section (annoying).
Anybody know what the deal is here?

If I remember correctly it all depends on which branch you take when the screen stops (meaning which gap between the rocks you fly into).
I always went for the middle one to avoid the high speed section (top).
I recall the game having at least two of these branching sections, I just don't remember which path sends you back to the beginning of the stage...

Yep, after testing this some more here's what I cam up with:
Top = redo first half, second half highspeed
Middle = second half regular
Bottom = second half highspeed
Where's the other branching section?
I also discovered 2 hidden stages each in stages 2 and 8.
