GD: Super Real Darwin

Good lord this game is impossible. Playing on Easy (I think that's the MAME default) and I never see things coming, everything moves just so damn fast and your ship is so big. Don't even want to think about playing Hardest. Any general strategies? I've noticed that ground-based turrets tend not to shoot when you're close to them, but that may be my imagination. Game is definitely a survival shooter, can't see myself ever playing this for score.
