It must be nice to have almost 12 g's to spend on a fucking NES game.

Not that I would buy it if I had it laying around.
My lord, I have come for you.

The listing is gone - probably removed by eBay.

"An Anonymous eBay user shared this history regarding the Super Rare HOLY GRAIL Magical Chase Video Game"

That quote just needed a ^_~ at the end.

I just won a Genesis Thunderfarce 3 off ebay for £14, CIB.

The guy found it in his garage collecting dirt. Removed cart, insert and instructions, put them in a spare case I had. Job done.

I don't know how it came up on my listings on ebay with the spelling mistake, but something tells me it helped the price.

I don't get lucky very often.

This is really what I read, in particular during TFIV's intro sequence, when the deformed title squeezes back together.

True story: I won a boxed and mint Japanese Steel Empire on Ebay for 3€, because the seller just wrote "Japanese Mega Drive Game can't read the title"

Although this was like 10 years ago. Not sure deals like this can still be found online. :/

Gotta love it when the seller's ignorance works out in your favor! I used to make a habit of purposely searching for things with misspellings, that's how I got my Neo Geo AES. Seller posted it as a Nio Geo, it was probably ten years ago...but I was still able to get it (an american AES with 3 games and 2 original arcade sticks) for about $100 if I remember correctly.

It cracks me up when they misspell things that are written on the object they are selling. I was looking through craigslist for cars the other day, and the amount of "Cameros" was astounding. Dude it's literally on your car.....c a m a r o....LOL

I can see why the guy wrote Thunderfarce.

Still crying that rancor got a DoDonPachi PCB for like $100 a few years ago because the seller put it in the wrong section and misspelled the name on YAJ.

luckily my kanji was just as terrible as his when I was typing it out in the search bar.
To be fair, though - this was back when we were gasping that people were actually buying / selling DDP boards for the princely sum of $300. And even at that price we felt we'd overpaid.

I think this fits the bill. $10,000 dollars for the Sega CD version of Lords of Thunder! It's also one of those auctions that uses buzz words to make it come up in more searches.

What has exactly caused this price explosion? I bought Pulseman about 5 years ago, in mint shape, for less than 80 bucks. Now it's 300 something to 600 something.

I mean, that is nuts.

I passed up Magical Pop'n in NM shape, a few years ago, for a bit over 400 dollars. I just didn't have it on me, at the time. Now, it's over 1000.

What's the scoop on this?

I'm guessing it's just a bunch of older gamers, who have money, collecting everything.

It's a combination of stupid people being turned on by the value in $ of their posessions rather than their worth as games, and - more significantly - greedy assholes with a sense for business who smelled blood already many years ago, and did what they had to do.

I picked it up on YHJ auctions in like new shape for about £25 around the same time.

Several factors are involved, but one of the most prominent is manufactured value. Works like this:

1: Foreigners go to Japan see cheap games
2: ebay picks up steam, foreigners notice
3: Foreigners return to/settle in Japan, open eBay stores
4: Over a decade foreigners fleece Japanese stores for everything game related for resale on eBay
5: eBayers manufacture value by bidding on their own produce, especially when they have multiples. Over a period of months/years those values become recognised and accepted, allowing them to sell the stored multiples for huge profits
6: The actual supply of games in Japan is all but depleted and sold off, actually making items that weren't scarce genuinely rare
7: Other eBayers follow the trend of increasingly expensive games and mark up all of their old games, ultimately making PAL & NTSC releases suddenly as desirable as Japanese releases - if not more so - overnight
8: Actual rarities continue on the upward trend helped along by manufactured values of unscrupulous resellers to reach the thousands
9: YHJ with a depleted domestic supply is forced to follow eBay's route and prices increase dramatically

10: If you didn't buy what you wanted in the last twenty years and aren't stinking rich to the point that money isn't an object, you're fucked and should stick to ROMS and Everdrives

Pretty much as Skykid states it.

What I find the most ridiculous is how shit the Germans are when it comes to selling Retro stuff. It is virtually never in even good condition and they charge the absolute top ceiling for everything and even the shittiest stuff becomes "rare" and they do this when they are sellers but when they are buyers they never want to pay even a fair rate and the shops are the worst over here. I never buy in Germany.

To me, and as already stated, it is just not that much fun when too much cash is tied up in games 'just to play them' and most of you are better off getting flashcarts.
To my mind I see no real issue in allowing people to experience and play the games in this day and age, I mean, the manufacturers have no issue with you playing those games from the 8-16bit days and if anything if you are now looking at buying some games at the higher prices of today (it may well fall in the future too - think of all those old codgers popping their clogs and then whole collections coming up for sale in about - 10-15 years due to many guys not making it past a certain age) by all means play them a lot and work out if you really, really need that title or should you perhaps go out and buy gold and silver or some Bitcoin or stocks etc.
