NOTICE - Upcoming downtime 05/02

Post by system11 »

I'm planning to migrate the forum to it's new home (at least for the moment) this weekend (29th Jan) - at some point on Sunday expect to find it disabled while new backup data is loaded into the new site. Unfortunately it's quite a big job and will take at least 5 hours if all goes well.

The look and feel will be slightly different as PHPBB has been through significant changes so I've had to retrofit things over the top of the new default theme they supply, there may be bugs in the theme or things that appear in incorrect colours - you'll have to bear with me on that as I've done the best I can without lots of people actually using it! Other parts will be welcome like images automatically displaying in a size that doesn't stretch the screen.

I just hope it will still be aimed at desktop monitor users first a foremost (like the current one) and not submit to degradation of mobile-first modern ui/ux where you have empty spaces everywhere and huge ass font size and what not.

Will there be YT/Tweet imbeds and links that default-click into new tabs?

It's a bit narrower, it can be adjusted easily if required later.

Seconding this.

I've ended up spending hours writing custom CSS to make some websites more tolerable on desktop.

Good luck for the migration and thanks for running this place.

Same, but thankfully phpBB-like forums all seem to be fine in that front, it's the javascript-heavy, infinite scrolling bloat-turds like discourse that are insufferable.

I have to push it a week, fixing cars unexpectedly. 30 minute fix on my Fiat turning into 'jack it up and take everything off' because I dropped a socket into the engine bay.....

Depending on who's running the scoreboard it can be a few months between updates, depending on how active they are. Because the scoreboards are user-run in the forum (which allows for more streamlined discussion in the thread) that's not unusual, and you can always send a polite PM to the person to remind them there's a new score on the board.

I believe Third_strike meant a new moderator for the High Score Index. There was a bit of confusion about that this week. It hasn't been updated since 2019, and quite a lot of the links in the Index are now outdated. I still try to keep the ones in the Community Record thread updated, but it's not perfect and doesn't have indie games. The best thing would be if the pinned comment could get updated at some point (by a new moderator maybe?)

There are several very dedicated users in that section with know how to be a good moderator.

I didn't want to sound smug hahaha. I sent PMs and all. In fact I just posted two hi-scores that are not even that good, just wanted to be the lone wolf in Andro Dunos II Arcade Difficulty hahaha.

Well...

My life is full of things I wish it wasn't at the moment, something came up, migration didn't happen, but I need to get this done.

Migration will be this weekend, expect it to be down for about a day, I've just proven the end to end steps so cross fingers that everything is ok after. If not I can always point DNS back to the old system anyway.

THERE WILL BE BUGS PROBABLY.

I'm still fixing bugs in the new theme even now, so be gentle. It was a really steep learning curve.

I did the best I could, default Prosilver will also be available to switch to, but it's really default, even the logo is PHPBB out of the box.
