Oh rad, better than I thought! The inclusion of KKND2 made me very happy. Very underrated RTS with a banging' soundtrack.

And a pleasant reminder of Nightlong. Forgot all about that. :D

Yeah, I ran into that problem as well. I think I lost a few points on Xtreme-G and Resident Evil 2. Also LOL at me not recognizing Parasite Eve - I still haven't gotten far enough in the game to recognize it.

BulletMagnet wrote:(...) but I stuck to a strict "no Googling" rule for myself. If I'm gonna suck I'm gonna suck right.
One reason why the quiz gets so difficult in the lower rows is to pose a challenge for the people that do google. ;) I won't set up a rule that "Google is not allowed", because I have no way of enforcing it anyway.
The one thing that I ask people not to do is to "crowdsource" the game and repost it in other communities (like twitter or 4chan), as that takes focus away from the main forums and gets answers posted early.
BulletMagnet wrote:If I submit a set of guesses earlier on but then figure out some more once you drop a hint, do I just re-submit a new set which effectively "cancels out" the old one, or should I wait until all the hints are given and just guess once?
You don't have to wait until all hints are given. Submit as many times as you want, all your entries are added on top of each other at the end. The latest guess overwrites the previous ones - but only for fields that you filled. So if you submitted early, and then find out #25 on the last day of the month, you can submit another form that has your name+forum, but is otherwise empty except for #25.
BulletMagnet wrote:Actually, on a related note, amongst people who wind up with the same amount of points, what determines their placement on the high score list - presumably those who sent in their guesses earlier are placed higher?
Yes and no! After the month is over, the points are weighted with an Excel formula. So no game gives you exactly "1 point", but a little bit extra depending on how easy it was to guess.

In the last round, "Grim Fandango" had a correct answer percentage of 98%, getting it right earned you 1,0024 points. On the other hand "Ultra Violent Worlds" was very difficult to find out (7% answer rate), it got you 1,0929 points. All other games gave you values between those two.

Here are the "actual" scores of all people that had 10 points:

01 - 10,306 points - gms - KellogsFrosties
02 - 10,304 points - hcg - mainpatr
03 - 10,298 points - pop - Sascha
04 - 10,297 points - smu - Ed Oscuro
05 - 10,277 points - ftg - LockeTribal
06 - 10,271 points - nto - 4C8en
07 - 10,271 points - rkb - Grandhanate
08 - 10,260 points - mmx - Lynx
09 - 10,249 points - mtc - xxr
10 - 10,238 points - rkb - kirika1987

You can see that with the exception of 4C8en and Grandhanate, they all had different scores due to their mix of answers. And for those that manage to have exactly the same points even with weighted scores, we go back to your initial idea: whoever sent in first, gets the higher position.

And that's how the score works! :)

guigui wrote: Also curious to know how one can update entries. Last time I checked it looked like I had to actually input everything again, quite discouraging for lazy boy like me.
See my answer to BulletMagnet above - you don't have to enter everything again. :)
Some players make one initial entry, and then add five single games over the course of the last weekend in five separate submits.

No points lost - I am quite generous when it comes to franchises, just entering the series name was enough. So if you entered "Extreme-G 3" and "Resident Evil Gun Survivor", you'd still get full points both times.

April Quiz - Fruits & Vegetables

This month I've had my hands full in my personal life and didn't finish my planned quiz.... Annoying, but luckily I always have another one up my sleeve! Accordingly, this time it's about healthy eating, er I mean fruits & vegetables. ;)

Whether it's simple fruit bonuses in arcade games, or talking vegetables with arms and legs from modern titles - it's once again up to you to figure out all the games. :D

No bonus points this round, but after being asked if the "gender & race" mix of the last intro gif was representative.... (no it wasn't, it was randomly selected!) ...I'll just ask you guys now to check. If you don't want to you don't have to, it's completely optional.

Deadline is Saturday the 30th of April, participation via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

Here comes the quiz, have fun:

April Quiz - Clues #1

Dear kids, eat more vegetables! It's healthy and all. I don't want to preach any further, instead I wish you Happy Easter with enough time to participate in the April round. Over forty people are already playing. :)

To make participation palatable (ha!), I'll now write down a few hints:

1) In this round, Nintendo has supremacy - ten games are only available on their platforms.
2) At picture 10 you can see a small part of the main character.
3) For the strawberries of number 5 you need especially good platforming skills.
4) Only 8 games in this round use 3D graphics.

Deadline is Saturday the 30th of April, participation via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

Here's the quiz again, good luck: https://i.imgur.com/fVJp71C.png

April Quiz - Clues #2

Have you ever wondered what the fruit on #1 is? After all, it's there from the very first game of the series from the early 90s... I googled it today, it's a tomato. Now you know. :)
Over 60 people are already taking part in this veggie round, you can too! :P

Even more so with these second and last hints:

1) Six games in this round-up first appeared as arcade machines.
2) In game 13 you fight against gods of Greek mythology.
3) Number 17 is a game for the Atari 2600.
4) And the last one - the 16th entry is a fantasy RPG

@drauch - doesn't look like a bad entry to me, there's players with way fewer points!

Deadline is next week Saturday the 30th of April, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

Here's the quiz again, you have barely one week left: https://i.imgur.com/fVJp71C.png

April Quiz - Answers & Score

Did you know that strawberries are not berries, but nuts? But bananas are berries? So weird! Let's make things clearer by solving the veggie puzzle... we start with the bonus question. If you had imagined the quiz players to be a rather homogeneous group, you were right: if you leave out the almost 15% strong "don't like to answer" fraction, the field of players (this time 132 people strong) of this quiz series is almost 95% male and about 90% white. Here's a pie chart: https://i.imgur.com/o51R89h.png
Does it matter? No. Was it interesting to see once? I think it was. :)

But now something really important, namely the answers to lasts months puzzle... first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the award ceremony.

1) Kirby and the Forgotten Land
This is a damn good tomato, because it replenishes all your life energy.
Answer rate: 91%
Other suggestions: 8x Super Smash Bros, Mario World

2) Bubble Symphony
One of the many sequels to Bubble Bobble, "Bubble Symphony" appeared as an arcade machine in 1994 and was later ported to the Saturn. One of you slipped through with "Puzzle Bobble", I was tired.... shouldn't have happened. ;)
Answer rate: 88%
Other suggestions: Yoshi, Rainbow Island

3) Mario Kart 64
All but two players recognised the classic N64-funracer.
Answer rate: 98%
Other suggestions: -

4) Ms. Pac-Man
That's FEMALE Pac Man, did you not see the lipstick? ^_^ Pac-Man also gave the full point though, accordingly everyone guessed this title correctly.
Answer rate: 100%
Other suggestions: -

5) Celeste
Answer rate: 79%
Other suggestions: Undertale, Stardew Valey

6) Dig Dug
...another arcade classic.
Answer rate: 74%
Other suggestions: Q*Bert, Boulder Dash

7) Donkey Kong Country
Here we see the version for the GBA.
Answer rate: 92%
Other suggestions: -

8.) Streets of Rage
Answer rate: 73%
Other suggestions: Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Sega Rally, Final Fight, Comic Zone, Fighter Bros

9) Super Mario Bros 2
Here's the beefed up version from Super Mario All-Stars. I personally wouldn't have recognised it, but I never played the second Mario Bros.
Answer rate: 72%
Other suggestions: Yoshi, Bonk's Adventure

10) Zool
For "Zoop or zoot or something with the green guy and yellow horns" by Embrodak there was just barely no point, because unfortunately Zool doesn't have yellow horns. ;)
Answer rate: 64%
Other suggestions: -

11) Super Mario Sunshine
Who remembers those nasty fruit mini-games?
Answer rate: 66%
Other suggestions: Animal Crossing, Katamari Damacy, Banjo-Kazooie

12) Parappa the Rapper
Significantly better known than I expected! Should have swapped it in order with number 5. :)
Answer rate: 88%
Other suggestions: Gitaroo Man

13) Kid Icarus Uprising
This is really a fun vegetable enemy design.
Answer rate: 68%
Other suggestions: 4x Dragon Quest, Immortals Fenys Rising, Blue Dragon

14) Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania
Answer rate: 76%
Other suggestions: Fruit Ninja, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Diddy Kong Racing

15) Pikmin 3
Friendship points for "Picman & Pickmin" by Zion & CactusMan. :)
Answer rate: 75%
Other suggestions: It Takes Two, Unravel

16) Final Fantasy 12
Above the fourth row the answer rates were over 60%, but starting in row four everything was below 50%.
Answer rate: 47%
Other suggestions: 4x Little Big Planet, 3x Sackboy A Big Adventure, Zelda Twilight Princess, Tomato Man, Psychonauts, No mans sky, Mr Do, immortals fenyx rising, Fortnite, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Bravely Default II

17) Plaque Attack
Answer rate: 34%
Other suggestions: 4x Space Invaders, E.T., Dr. Mario

18.) Goof Troop
The password screen of Goof Troop. Pretty mean! ;)
Answer rate: 25%
Other suggestions: 6x Super Mario, Super Mario Kart, Mario Vs Donkey Kong, Mario Paint, Mario Fun with Typing, Donkey Kong, Jeopardy, Final Fight, Doki Doki Panic, superfrog, Mickey Mouse

19) Mr. Do!
...another well-known arcade game.
Answer rate: 33%
Other suggestions: Centipede, Fruity Frank, Dr.Fruit, Dig Dug 2

20) Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom
With that name, the game was a must in this round. ;)
Answer rate: 34%
Other suggestions: Wario Ware, Wario Party, Undertale, Cabbage Patch Kids, Atomic Veggies

21) Marvin's Marvellous Adventure.
From the obscurity shelf, a rather average Amiga jump'n'run from 1994. Here's the scene used: https://youtu.be/Cz54C5uK3kQ?t=874
Answer rate: 11%
Other suggestions: "Something that wants to be Yoshi's Island but isn't" by jgkspsx, 5x Yoshi's Island, 3x James Pond, super mario 2, Super Mario World, Jazz Jackrabbit, Game and Watch Gallery, Dynamite Heady, Bloodborne

22) Bonsai Barber
You have to cut the "hair" of the vegetable.
Answer rate: 27%
Other suggestions: 4x Loco Roco, The Tree Lady, Wario Ware, Warioware: Smooth Moves

23) Kangaroo
This arcade title was long only available in ports for 80s Atari consoles, but since 2020 you can also play Kangaroo on Switch & ps4.
Answer rate: 27%
Other suggestions: Donkey Kong Jr, fruity kong, Mappyland, Spanky's Quest

24) Pressure Cooker
This was a difficult screen and the hardest entry of this round after #21.
Answer rate: 20%
Other suggestions: 12x Frogger, 5x Burger Time, Chipwits, Fruit Panic, Fruit Sports, E.T.

25) Aladdin
A very tough fragment from a well-known game. My respects to all who guessed it right!
Answer rate: 37%
Other suggestions: Minecraft, Banana Prince, (Super) Burger Time, Castle of Illusion, Ice Age, Stardew Valley, Zelda

Congrats on the Magnet for almost 20 points ! I'm enjoying my last place again. Game is fun, and fun is enough.

Oh and Mr Horizon ... seriously ... SNES Aladdin ? Is that even a game ?
Give me Genesis Aladdin and I'll recognize the apple among anything else.

Hum, I guess this is because the common opinion (and mine too) is that the SNES Aladdin version is not good while the Genesis version of Aladdin is great.

All of this happened when the Nintendo/Sega console fight (not using the actual word war here for obvious reason) was on fire. So seeing SNES version in the quizz certainly raises a lot of memories to everyone in their childhood mid 90's.

May Quiz - Topless Dudes

Over the many years of this quiz series, we've really had quite a few puzzles whose theme was more or less "women".... number one, two, three and the totally not juvenile number four. ;)

It's an absurdity that we never did this with the male video game characters! So we're making up for it now, and "topless" the 25 gentlemen have to be as well. So how about it - do you recognise all games just by the sixpacks???

This round is considerably less retro than usual, I hope you can still manage. :) Also - vote for your favourite genre in the bonus question!

Deadline is Tuesday 31 May, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

Here comes the quiz, have fun:

I'm sure you'll recognise way more than three titles once the month is over. ;)

And I thought about including "Cho Aniki"...but I am reserving that for the Shmups quiz that'll come some time this year!

May Quiz - Clues #1

In this round we'll know if someone uses Google or not... your browser history will have some very strange entries and you'll have probably seen some "fan art" that you would rather forget again (at least that's how I felt during the research). Sorry not sorry ;)

There are 25 players so far, and today I would like to give you a few hints:

1) There was a lot of excitement around AAA title #3 in the current decade. I can't say anything about the style, because that's also the name of the game. ;)
2) Questions about #8? Several characters from this series can also be found in Super Smash Bros.
3) Five games in this round have only appeared on Nintendo consoles (ok, one of them is just an exclusive remake).
4) Four titles are pure fighting games, where the gameplay consists 100% of 1vs1 fights.

Deadline is Tuesday 31st May, participation via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

May Quiz - Clues #2

There are only nine days left for you to join this round.... are you in yet? So far no one/b] from here (out of just under 40 total), so probably NOT. :P Let's go, here are the final clues:

1) The #13 is a dating sim, if you want you can date the gentleman pictured!
2) Number 7 comes from a long line of creative JRPGs.
3) Game 18 is part of a series with stealth gameplay and is played from either first or 3rd person perspective.
4) And last - the titles in this picture did NOT make it into this round for various reasons: https://i.imgur.com/BSHzBx9.png ...because I didn't know the games, I had forgotten the character, didn't think they were suitable, they are already scheduled for another round or have already been used in the past. :)

Deadline is Tuesday 31st of May, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Been a wee busy lately, but I'll try and get a vote in. If none of us play don't get discouraged 'cause this is great 8)

Tossed in an entry, featuring lots of likely-embarrassing guesses...though I suppose that fits the theme. :P

May Quiz - Clues #3

Attention, this is the last weekend before the deadline! Early next week this round will be over.
So far, two players from this community are in, out of a total of over fifty. Neither number is particularly large, so get a move on?

Maybe it will help if I give a third set of clues for once. :) Here you go:

1) Game number 4 is from Electronic Arts.
2) The 3, 17 and 19 are AAA open world titles, but only the former plays mainly in first person perspective.
3) Only two games in this round have appeared on the Commodore Amiga.
4) Picture 11 shows the final boss.

Deadline is Tuesday 31st May, participation via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

The universe is neither hostile nor friendly, simply indifferent.

Even without my umbillical cable attached I still have over 12,000 plates of fortified armour AND I have my AT Field! There's NO WAY I can lose!!

May Quiz - Answers & Score

For a while it looked like we had a "gay panic" at our hands and the player numbers were far from 100... then in the last two days enough people have turned up for a triple digit number anyway, so I'm happy. :)

Here are the results of the poll:
Image
Beat'em'ups clearly won! Well then, there will be a good beating sometime this year. ;)

But I have to ask you a question: Why was "Cyberpunk 2077" so hard to guess? Less than half got it right, even though I gave several hints about it (AAA, open world, this decade, first-person perspective, lots of press). Also the picture shows the implants on the arms and the "facial stumps" which I only know from Cyberpunk. How come I have misjudged this so much?

But now it's time for the results of the quiz... first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the award ceremony.

1) Wii Sports
The Wii launch and flagship title is a nobrainer, everyone got this one right.
Answer rate: 100%
Other suggestions: -

2) God of War 2
Answer rate: 96%
Other suggestions: Bryan Fury

3) Cyberpunk 2077
As discussed in the intro text, it's a mystery to me why so few have recognised this.
Answer rate: 48%
Other suggestions: 8x Grand Theft Auto, 7x Saints Row, Anarchy Reigns, Far Cry, Wolfenstein, Pro Wrestling X, Wrestling, WWE 2K

4) The Sims 3
Answer rate: 87%
Other suggestions: Playboy

5) Tekken 7
Answer rate: 90%
Other suggestions: God of War, Mortal Combat 11, Soul Calibur

6) Yakuza 4
Answer rate: 80%
Other suggestions: King of Fighters, Saints Rows

7) Persona 4
Answer rate: 68%
Other suggestions: Catherine, Catherine Full Body, Hades, Narupo Shippuden

8.) Fire Emblem
I think it was Path of Radiance? Heavens, now I'm not sure myself! :/
Anyway, bet you don't dare to do a Google image search for "Ike Fire emblem topless"?
Answer rate: 67%
Other suggestions: Kingdom Hearts, Atelier Ryza, Breath of Fire, Chrono Cross, FFVII: Crisis Core, Final Fantasy, Trails Of Cold Steel, Xenoblade.

9) Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
Answer rate: 62%
Other suggestions: Final Fantasy XII, Devil May Cry, Gabriel Knight 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Xenoblade Chronicles

10) Super Punch Out
Answer rate: 82%
Other suggestions: Ready 2 rumble

11) Resident Evil 5.
Good Wesker, just before he mutates into the final boss - and not far from the famous Boulder Punch scene. :)
Answer rate: 55%
Other suggestions: 3x Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry, Dead or Alive, Duke Nukem forever, King of Fighters, Spec Ops: The Line

12) NieR:Automata
Answer rate: 49%
Other suggestions: 6x Final Fantasy, 6x Devil May Cry, Dead or Alive, Metal Gear Solid, Bayonetta

13) Dream Daddy
Answer rate: 68%
Other suggestions: Boyfriend Dungeon, Larry's Wet Dream, The Banner Saga

14) Street Fighter 4
Answer rate: 58%
Other suggestions: 4x Asuras Wrath, Dragon Quest XI, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Nioh, Odama, Zelda

15) Knockout Kings
Since "Knockout Kings" segues seamlessly into the "Fight Night" series, in my eternal mercy I let the latter count as well.
Answer rate: 51%
Other Suggestions: 4x Ready 2 Rumble Boxing, 3x Mike Tyson Boxing, Don King Boxing, Muhammad Ali Boxing, Foes of Ali, Boxing Legends of the Ring, Rocky

16) Muscle March
Answer rate: 56%
Other suggestions: 5x Cho Aniki, JoJos Bizarre Adventure, Space Channel 5

17) GTA 4 - the lost and damned
The first DLC for GTA4, I thought Ballad of Gay Toni was better.
Answer rate: 50%
Other suggestions: 5x Mafia, 3x LA Noire, James Bond, Metal Gear Solid, Saints Row, Scarface

18.) Hitman.
We see a half-naked guy with red pants in a Hitman game of the early 2000s.
Answer rate: 23%

23) Dynamite Cop
"Die Hard Arcade" is close, but has different levels and, most importantly, a different intro (where the screenshot is from).
Answer rate: 19%
Other suggestions: Die Hard Arcade, 3x Too Human, Doom, Fallout New Vegas, Metal Gear Solid, Odin, Ring, Zeus

24) Time Commando
The hardest title of this round - I've probably never seen a more abstruse time travel story.
Answer rate: 9%
Other suggestions: 3x Asterix & Obelix, 3x Runescape, black&white, Dragon Age, Gabriel Knight III, Gladiator, Gothic, Hulk Hogan, Prince of persia

So I've managed the local lead when it comes to shirtless dudes and fruits/veggies...if I also somehow do it for an upcoming entry on video game meat I think I'll have unofficially out-BIL'ed BIL. :P

Definitely no surprises on my end this month...I knew what I knew, I figured out a few more via the hints, and what I was clueless on I was really clueless on, heh.
