Monthly Videogame Quiz

Post by Mr_Horizon »

hello everyone,

I know this forum as I'm a fan of Shmups, and now I am finally getting around to test your gaming knowledge. :)

For this I have prepared a series of monthly riddles - I've been doing this for a while in various english & german online communities (over twenty by now!), and would love to include you if there is interest. Please know there is no financial or marketing motivation in this, I'm just doing it for fun.

Also @mods - please move this thread if it's in the wrong category.

The riddles can be about finding all eight games used in a fake screenshot:

...or about guessing the right games from 25 cutouts:

There's even a sound FX quiz once in a while. I'm confident there's lots of gaming geeks here that will score well on any type of gaming riddles. :)

Feedback is very welcome. I have decided to include the Shmups forum this year, as either the March or April round will have a Shmups theme - so the perfect opportunity for this community to take the Top 10 by storm. ;)

If no one shouts STOP I'm going to post the current February Quiz here in an hour!

Aye, I missed two (for the FPS quiz):
Spoiler
Wolfenstein 3d Soldier
Duke Nukem 3D shotgun
Star Wars Dark Forces storm trooper
Shadow Warrior hud
Doom backdrop
Rise of the Triad explosion/eyeball
System Shock weapons at top (i was wrong)
Cuttin' deep there! I've got some more gaming to do, obviously.

February Quiz - Cooking Kitchen

Alright, thank you all for the encouragement. :) Here is the quiz for February, the first of the 9th season of my riddles. From February to November, you'll each get a quiz from me in which you have to guess the correct games from 25 picture fragments. Your points will be collected for you and evaluated in a high score list at the end of each round (at the end of the year also for your forum!).

This round is about "cooking"... so from real cooking games to food-based minigames to kitchens in computer games. How many do you recognise? :)

Of course, I will have left out one or two "perfect genre representatives", but that's difficult to avoid and makes the quiz a little less predictable. Also, even though I give some clues every weekend, this is a tough game - depending on the theme it's completely normal to just get a handful of titles right, but remember: The Shmup round is coming soon!

Deadline is Monday 28 February, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here comes the quiz, bon appetit:

Ack! Cooking games, my mortal weakness! I'm better in a real kitchen than I am at identifying these! ...I know maybe a few of them.

I'll take a poke at the first screenshot...
Spoiler
Duke Nukem 3D shotgun, Rise of the Triad middle finger, Dark Forces stormtrooper, Wolf3D brown dude, DOOM world and imp, Shadow Warrior HUD, not quite sure about the stuff at the top of the screen - maybe Blake Stone? Still missing something.
Rad, btw.

The kitchen topic isn't easy... but as I had said, your time to shine will come in the spring (with a Shmups theme quiz)! I hope some of you will still join the rounds leading up to the "main event". ;)

You got 6 out of 8 correct with the fps picture. Did you see the answers are also there in the OP?

Yeah, didn't want to spoil it. Egads! I tried one of the games recently which I missed. I knew it looked familiar!
Spoiler
Zero Tolerance doesn't really play well with the Genesis Plus GX Wide widescreen enhancement, but I thought it was worth a shot.

February Quiz - Clues #3

I have a message for all the top chefs gathered here - the menu must be ready by Monday evening! So you only have this weekend left.

At the moment there are just under sixty people, but no one of them from this forum. I hope there'll be more players, come out of hibernation - even with less than twenty points you'll make it into the top 10. :)

So @drauch @guigui @Stevens or @Ed Oscuro - how about it? :) (...and how do I link users in this forum??)

To make this round more palatable for you, here are the clues #3:

1) The 1 and 7 are point & click adventures of the late 80s that are considered genre classics. The 11 is also one, but less old & classic.
2) In game 5 you don't just design pizza, organised crime is also an integral part of the gameplay.
3) Games 8, 14 and 20 are games based on movies or TV series.
4) The sixth picture shows a survival game, already the name indicates that cooking is important.
5) Game 15 is a well-known free to play MMORPG.

Deadline is next Monday, 28th February, you can join via this google form: http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Alright, I filled out the cooking quiz answers that I legally could. I know one answer that I can't legally claim, because I looked it up.

Just a random thought: I would have liked to see these two games in the cooking quiz:
Spoiler
Snax 'n' Jaxson arcade, and Aidyn Chronicles N64 which starts in a kitchen if memory serves (no pun intended)!
My guesses on the cooking quiz:
Spoiler
1. Maniac Mansion. 3. Monster Hunter Tri? Not Genshin Impact. 4. Burger Time 6. Don't Starve 8. Deep Space 9: Crossroads of Time 9. Chuckie Egg? 14. The Three Stooges (NES?) 15. New Runescape? 21. The one I know but can't legally enter because I was curious what "Flanergide" is (it's fictional)
Also, check out this funny but horrific cooking-themed short adventure game on Steam!

February Quiz - Answers & Score

What a reception, with 108 guests it's no longer just a dinner but a real feast instead! :D Usually each quiz season starts off a bit sluggish, but with over a hundred players this round was really well attended.

Maybe it's also because of the new forums? :) With the Rocket Beans, the Shmups Forum and the World of Players community there are three new entries in 2022 - in addition, the "lastgamestanding" has moved to join the new "Wasted" gaming page. Welcome all!

Here are the answers... first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the high score.

1) Maniac Mansion
Answer rate: 88%
Other suggestions: Friday the 13th, Monkey Island, Thimbleweed Park, Zack McKracken.

2) Overcooked.

5) Pizza Connection / Tycoon

Other suggestions: Club Penguin, Cooking Mama, GTA Chinatown Wars, Pizza Maker.

6) Don't Starve

Answer rate: 77%
Other suggestions: -

7) Zak McKracken.
The protagonist in his kitchen.
Answer rate: 68%
Other suggestions: leisure suit larry, Maniac Mansion, Police Quest 2, The life of Ray McDonald.

8.) Deep Space Nine - Crossroads of Time

Answer rate: 36%
Other suggestions: Chuckie Egg, Dizzy, Hot Potato!, Potato, Potato Head, Potato Game, Potato Simulator, Spud Danger.

10) Job Simulator
A fun virtual reality romp - but I feel bad, "cooking simulator" would have been a much better choice for this quiz.
Answer rate: 64%
Other suggestions: 9x Cooking Simulator, Glover, The cooking game VR.

11) Chewy: Esc from F5.
I thought these characters would be hard to forget - but probably a lot of people have just never seen the game.

12) Food Fight
Answer rate: 48%

Answer rate: 68%
Other suggestions: Professor Layton

14) the three Stooges
Answer rate: 62%
Other suggestions: 3x Monkey Island, Leisure Suit Larry, iron chef, Coffee Talk, 4 Fists for One Hallelujah

Answer rate: 24%
Other suggestions: 3x cooking simulator, Alice in Wonderland, Art of Balance, "Cook, Serve, Delicious", Cooking Madness, Epic Chef, Crunch Club

19) Witchtastic
This came out last year, seems like it was inspired by Overcooked, along with #24 the most difficult title in this round.
Solving rate: 9%
Other suggestions: A Bards Tale, Alchemist Simulator, Atelier Ayesha: The Alchemist of Dusk, Harry Potter, the sims 4, Witch It.

20) Elvira: Mistress of the Dark

Other suggestions: Addams Family, Harry Potter, Lord of the rings, Prince of Persia, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Simon The Sorcerer, Ultima, Zelda Wand of Gamelon.

I hate this name! And no, "red strings club" is the other sci-fi barkeeper game. ;)
Answer rate: 59%
Other suggestions: Coctail Cuppo, Death Road to Canada, The Red Strings Club.

22) the Supper
Answer rate: 25%

25) Fast Food
Answer rate: 20%

March Quiz - the "Mystery Theme"

February was about the kitchen, March is about.... yes, about what?? This time you can answer the question of the theme yourself! All 25 games this month have one crucial detail in common. Whoever finds out the secret theme (and enters it correctly in the bonus question) gets a bonus point for themselves AND the other players in their forum.

Maybe it's easy, maybe it's difficult - I'm curious myself how many of you recognise the theme. :)

Deadline is Thursday 31st March, participation via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

Here comes the quiz, have fun:

Shoot, I only recognize maybe five of these off the top of my head, though there are a few others that I should know, but don't. Based on what I do see, however, my completely wild guess on the common theme would be...

All of the pictured games released in the same year?

Hey, you're not supposed to post any guesses in the thread just yet. There's a google form at http://www.retrogamequiz.com/ where all the answers are being collected with your name and forum - why don't you put your five answers + bonus question down? :)

You can also update or add to your entry at any time (all submissions with your name are added together at the end of the month).

March Quiz - Clues #1

Halfway through the month I want to offer you some help. So far thirty people are playing, of which two are from this forum. Will a few more people join in the remaining two weeks? I wish you a nice weekend, hopefully with enough time to take part! :)

So, here are the clues #1:

1) Game 12 is a famous JRPG.
2) The 16 is the only fighting game in this round.
3) In picture 3 you are just deciding on the faction of a well-known RTS game.
4) If you like 2D platformers, you should check out number 1, 6 and 8.

Closing date is Thursday March 31st, participation via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/

Here is the quiz again, good luck: https://i.imgur.com/CJr431c.png

You already did represent this forum, just by joining! Now there's three players from here, let's see who makes it on top of the local high score.
And for the forum comparison at the end of the year, you can also make points just by frequent participation.

Well then, just enter your 5+X titles? And see where you rank with the other three that are already in for this month. :)

March Quiz - Clues #2

Aaaand here it is already, the last weekend of March. One last time there's help from me - but then you're on your own for the last couple days. :)
The number of players has risen to over fifty, including four from this forum. Let's go!

Remember you can always update/add to your existing entry - here are the final clues:

1) In game 7 you have to sneak and steal stuff.
2) Title 18 has been released on the Neo Geo.
3) Number 4 is a sci fi motorbike racing game. How many of these are there actually?
4) Game 11 is not from Sega! ;)

Deadline is Thursday 31st of March, enter via http://www.retrogamequiz.com/.

Here's the quiz one last time, good luck: https://i.imgur.com/CJr431c.png

March Quiz - Answers & High Score

Oh what a riddle! Oh what a secret! A mystery of the very special kind! What was the topic of the last round? ;) Less than half of you had guessed it correctly...

Let's go back to the past. About two years ago I asked you in the bonus question about your "best gaming year", eighty people had voted then and delivered a very clear result:

Image

Accordingly, I've been wanting to do a round on this topic for a while. And since we set a new record with 127 players, I consider the experiment a success. :) Thanks to all who took part!

Now you'll get the results... first the names of the games as text, then the pictures, then the award ceremony.

Re: Monthly Videogame Quiz

Heh, several entries I knew (or thought I knew) the series, but wasn't sure which entry it was...guess if I'd attempted to pinpoint the exact year maybe I could have figured them out, but I stuck to a strict "no Googling" rule for myself. If I'm gonna suck I'm gonna suck right.

One quick question before next round: if I submit a set of guesses earlier on but then figure out some more once you drop a hint, do I just re-submit a new set which effectively "cancels out" the old one, or should I wait until all the hints are given and just guess once?

Actually, on a related note, amongst people who wind up with the same amount of points, what determines their placement on the high score list - presumably those who sent in their guesses earlier are placed higher? Hmm...a bona fide risk-reward score mechanic.

Yes, same here ! So 4 points it was :D

Also curious to know how one can update entries. Last time I checked it looked like I had to actually input everything again, quite discouraging for lazy boy like me.
Bravo jolie Ln, tu as trouvé : l'armée de l'air c'est là où on peut te tenir par la main.
