Right. The only thing true about pizzagate was the underlying assumption that we're ruled by a cabal of rapists and pedos. Everything else was up and down bullshit. With a partisan bent.

When I was a child I used to think this kind of thing was mostly harmless fantasy stuff and sometimes interesting - like aliens building pyramids, god, big foot and other cryptids, etc. But that was pre-internet - hearing "jet fuel can't melt steel beams" for the thousandth time broke me and now, just like Christmas, it's just another thing for me to hate.

Lovecraft's troubling personal views (even for his time) have been common knowledge for quite awhile and neither his works nor his presence in pop culture have gone anywhere (to put the situation rather mildly), unless there's some huge recent development I've missed.

You should see his friend and contemporary Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian.

Howard writes a mean action scene but any time Conan comes near Africa things turn ugly fast;

To the point that Conan breaks character completely and turns into someone straight out of Birth of a Nation.

LOL, as soon as I read that I thought of the bit in "The Vale of Lost Women" where Conan's all of course I HAVE to turn on my black allies for your sake just because of your skin color. It's a bizarre disconnect because the stories are frequently about the conflict between barbarism and civilization, with the later being a web of deceit used to manipulate others and hoard wealth. Conan is like the ultimate contrast to that, not a nice guy, but someone who lives on his own wits and strength and respects people who do the same. The last things he should care about are your social stratum and how pale you are.

I was thinking of ol' HP tonight while in the VG CRACK throes of my triennial SOTN revisit. Image Those statues added to the CV1 FISHMANS area become disquieting via Innsmouth-vision. Image Perhaps it is Super Highbrow Literary Reference to Alucard's own demihuman origins. Image Whatever the case may be, Subhuman Rapefish Must Die Image

Image

I'll put this Muramasa through your fuckin head Image Maybe I am being racist against fishmans  Better safe than sorry mirite Image

Incidentally, the "Cthulhu" enemy's name is just more of the casual pop-lit fuckery abundant in SOTN's English translation. In JP it's "Devil." Its actual Cthulhu-referencing head-swap "Malachi" drops the D in Japan to become "Evil." Cute! Cuter than rapacious fish mirite? Image

TBH, I'm much less concerned with the opinions of some screeching cancel cunts on HPL, than those of this absolute dipshit, would-be screenwriter of Space Jesu Navel Gazing Extravaganza Prometheus (2012):

Jon Spaihts wrote:
[The Space Jockeys] are interesting entities not fully explained, but to keep an audience interested in those things it couldn’t be abstraction, it couldn’t be a purely ‘alien story’ about things we can’t relate to. It was going to have to be connected to our own story. Somehow the story of those creatures was going to have to be connected to the human story, not just our history but our fate to come.

Now there's a truly damaging treatment of the man's work. Dan O'bannon's coffin must be revving fast enough to power FTL travel and discover Cosmic Horror IRL. Nice essay on HPL's influencing of Alien, and why the last two films suck big dick. Image Well I mean they have other problems, but Spaihts and that one LOST fuck - wait, TWO LOST fucks! Baldy and Mystery Box (SPOILER: the box is full of dog shit)'s pinheaded anti-horror ethos seals the retarded tomb.

It still amazes me Lovecraft of all people was able to voice support for the new deal... then again, he was hardly Paris Hilton, and had to actually ration that inheritance..

I'm pretty sure I enjoyed The Prometheus Trap more, a movie made only because they had access to a warehouse, some crates, and a sheet of plastic. Space Jesus is only entertaining in the meta aspect - a "make your own fun" adventure. Prometheus Trap, though, feels super refreshing by how shitty everything looks.

Neither is as quite compelling as the story about a young man who wants nothing more than to squirt some green goo into everyone's brain. ...I recommend A Shoggoth on the Roof.

(The only thing Space Jesus is really about is Ridley Scott's romantic attraction to Michael Fassbender, everything else is Just Stuff That Happens. That's kind of lovecrafty in its own right - the fixation on conceiving life when two men are unable to do so on their own, etc. It's all subtext that exists completely by mistake, but who's to say Lovecraft's fish stuff was consciously intentional?)

The sad thing is, if Scott had just wanked himself to completion with Ambiguously Gay Robots In Space starring David and Walter, it may well have been a passable film. The material with Dave in SpaceJesu Smash Ur Faec (2012) and Dave/Walt in (Sniff Sniff) This Planet Smells Great! (2017) is generally quite good, in a silly ASH V BISHOP way. Image

Just ditch the kung-fu fighting. Have Dave passive-aggressively assail Walt in gayer, roboter ways, like leaving his slippers on in bed.

Lest I tempt synth-loving sci fi fans, I will restate that Nu Scott Alien is a would-be trilogy missing its third film, containing half a good movie apiece, both rigged up to blast curious viewers with high-pressure liquid dog shit. :[

re: lovecraft, some transcribed letters from before his death

Spoiler: show

lovecraft died kind of young and was turning around on an incredible amount of what people consider his ugly views as he walked toward death. i really think if he had lived a full life that he would have continued to grow, and it really bears mentioning that one of his chief regrets was how little he grew when he wrote some of his most regressive ideas.

a lot of lovecraft's stuff is still interesting despite being informed by his racism, xenophobia, reactionary politics, etc. while you can find a lot of those things informing his work, people still resonate with it despite that and there's a lot more to his work than the worst of him you see in it. perhaps, really, the value of someone's work is much more ineffable than trying to sum them up in a political bubble!

i guess his works, as they are, aren't really suitable for a modern climate without some added contextualization, but... like, what won't be as the times change? a lot of history's most beloved thinkers did some fucking wretched shit, really! whether to tarnish or celebrate shouldn't be the question, but rather how to present it going forward so that those experiencing now get the sum of the context. lovecraft wrote some interesting fiction, and you should probably know he was racist and that xenophobia was one of the most latent fears he tapped into manipulating to spook you. one might argue his great understanding of a fear of the unknown would have made him rather empathetic in late life, had he gotten one - who knows! no work is definitive, and if something moves people, it should probably be examined - not shelved or silenced - for better or worse.

- -

also, re: the ubiquity of 'cancelling' in general - it beckons so much to something like when socrates was found guilty of corrupting minds and executed. it's just culture trying to silence provoking thought, a lot of the time. great minds get shot down as much as turgid idiots and for just as petulant reasons. i hate that we no longer evaluate meaning in someone's work, and we instead rather work to decide which side of history they're on to determine whether they're allowed to even present ideas. everyone is so vapidly obsessed with making sure what is presented now is adequate for the future that our present is eroding to dust and we're losing the capacity to understand the worth in fucking anything. all value is decided by the creeping, motherless urge of some useless culture's political agenda.

what the fuck ever happened to self-determination? the entire political spectrum in the united states from far left to center to far right has turned so fucking far from enabling agency, identity, and expression that it reeks of the greatest evil. i can get along with and make friends with queer leftists, arguably "my people," from france, poland, brazil, chile - seems like anywhere but the UK and the US. something is fucking wrong with this country.

From what I heard of Fyodor Dostoevsky, Miles Davis, Caravaggio, Mel Gibson, Richard Wagner etc., they were/are not quite the kind of folks I'd like having around in person either. There is a saying in my first tongue that goes like "no saints produce earthenware".

I'm definitely NOT gonna stop enjoying the incredible lore that HPL created, just because he was a xenophobe like 95% of people were back then...

I mean we might just as well cancel the whole of human history if we're to research everyone who's a xenophobe and take them out of the picture. and pretend that every piece of art, architectureetc just materialized out of thin air. or maybe pretend that modern civilization was created circa 2018, and before then it was a land of neanderthals and dinosaurs.

where does it end?

^ definitely not saying to stop? i extremely strongly disagree with the people trying to totally discredit his work's value and worry you might have misread what i said. i do think being aware of how xenophobic he was is an important part of processing the work, though - what he is writing is definitely playing with internal biases and working with one's own inherent racism and fear of the unknown. uncritical examination of anything is dangerous, but i always advocate being critical over censorship or cancellation.

Aren't we all kind of putting flashlights under our chins and scaring ourselves over nothing right now?

I mean with the HBO show repurposing Lovecraft for a black liberation theme and getting pretty much universal praise, I don't think we're gonna have to worry about HBO management firing anybody because of some clout-chasing randos on twitter.

i don't know anything about the show, i've just seen an uptick in people trying to discredit the author, lately. i don't know why people can't go "dude was racist" and still read his stuff if they're interested in his fiction. there's this weird tendency to think whatever is distasteful (or even repugnant) about a person completely eclipses their creativity in modern america (or that it doesn't matter at all and that creative work is somehow apolitical, an equally stupid take) that is completely buck fucking wild. acknowledge biases, examine what is interesting, process it, etc.

i guess a little more about the show - the idea we need to reinvent authors' works rather than just make totally new things loosely inspired by them also feels decrepit. maybe the show is completely great, just feels weird to deliberately invoke a dead man's work instead of just making something inspired by it and dropping the name. america and its weird obsession with brand immortality....

kitten : I actually wasn't single-ing out your post. just picking up on the general discussion

and MM : I agree that as of now, it's not a huge deal. but I'm worried that it might be at some point :/ that reeeeeing is not immense right now, but it's just large enough to have me worried that more and more normies will pick up on it. and then it could get well known to ''avoid this author''. which could legit hurt HPL's work's legacy. which would really suck

just annoys me a bit, you know? :/

this sentiment is almost ubiquitous in queer lefty online spheres and it is obnoxious. the first thing said about any creative these days is whatever their known worst quality by today's merit is. US leftists think fucking nietzsche was alt-right at this rate just because he championed individual thought (despite being an apolitical anarchist whose tendencies almost certainly leaned left, and the consideration he greatly inspired a lot of 60's/70's leftist thinkers in france like foucalt).

i want to stress here for everyone's sake that my online socialization is almost entirely queer lefties or nihilists estranged by other queer lefties. i'm not some sort of weird rubbernecker, this is my day-to-day lol

Nietzsche champions libertarian ideas. Libertarians are there own thing. Anarchists are in the libertarian sphere.

You can't "lean left" and simultaneously complain that society only exists to hold you back. I mean, you can, but... love you, love you, love you.. you're a liberal!

you can be libertarian right or left, it's an axis arguably perpendicular to left/right. there are plenty of libertarian left thinkers, activists, ideologies, etc. deleuze and guattari were big nietzsche fans and also pretty radically left - skim the wiki page for anti-oedipus: capitalism and schizophrenia and tell me this sounds there isn't a marriage of leftism and nihilism, of the power of the individual and of the evils of society. you know, i often agree with your dunks on modern american politics, but you gotta pull your head out of your ass for a minute and let people position a way of seeing how the modern world is wrong in a way that isn't your own. i'd argue we both tend toward being perpetually critical, but i'm afraid to ever openly agree with you because you shoot at everyone you talk to. i'm not a liberal, home dog.

Fair enough.

You do see and hear the things the libertarians and righties love about Nietzsche, right? It's so dated, it's not something I can read for more than curiosity and entertainment.

I'm just not a big fan of "Don't Be Evil" liberalism/activism. That's such a good phrase, because Google has managed to perfectly model everything that brand represents as it ages and gets wealthy.

And, on a tangent from there, I appreciate Google's zero day research, but it's something else to hear them lecture Microsoft on updates when they have thousands of Android devices in the wild that cannot be reached with any patches. They aren't innocent in that.
