"A lawsuit filed Thursday said MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell stands to lose more than $2 billion after voting-machine companies Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic engaged in a "conspiracy and enterprise to harm him."

As well as financial damage, Lindell also received death threats because of the "cancel culture" the two companies created, the filing said."
At last, finally someone to point the finger at.
The 82-page lawsuit included quotes from the dystopian novels "Fahrenheit 451" and "1984."
Of course it does.

I saw 1984 being brought up by a disgruntled midlander after facebook censored some posts (dunno why) on his track day motorbike group. or something.
you can't make this up

Flustered people love to name-check 1984 when the most relevant Orwell writing is Shooting an Elephant

The Venn diagram of people who reference Orwell saying "THIS IS LITERALLY 1984" and people who have read Orwell is basically just two different circles standing there wondering what the other one is doing in their chart.

Orwell was an open and ardent socialist who fought on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and wound up in the faction under the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (Marxist Workers' Unification Party). He was even initially stationed at a place called the Lenin Barracks. The man came 2 millimetres from death after he took a fascist sniper bullet in the neck in the name of the cause. His work was heavily influenced/inspired by Trotsky, and the anarcho-syndicalists he encountered in the war.

Animal Farm is practically a Pixar reimagining of the Paris Commune.

That said, he was also a passionate anti-Stalinist and became very disillusioned with communism, after they tried to paint him as a fascist during the war. They used disinformation to paint the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista as a whole as fascist organization in a factional struggle in the Republican forces. He came to see the Soviet state as a corruption of genuine democratic socialism. Probably on account of it very clearly being a corruption of genuine democratic socialism.

I considered bringing up the elephant essay myself. Somewhat reflexively, like the exasperation one gets at everyone comparing everything to Harry Potter: "Read another book!!!"

Of course them actually reading 1984 is a pipe dream. I'd settle for them reading any book at this point. Remember Cruz reading Green Eggs and Ham on the floor to express how much he does not like whatever it was he was complaining about?

Like the bad joke "what's the difference between an Irish wedding and an Irish funeral? One drunk.": The fascist has read 0 books while the liberal has read 1 book. And it's Harry Potter~

Fox refused to air Trump's speech at the NC GOP convention, the first he's given in months. Newsmax & OAN did, but Fox just went with some other pre-taped show instead. MSNBC ran portions of it, but didn't broadcast what he was actually saying. They had a correspondent talking over him instead.

Can I cancel Manchin? He's a Republican. If your parents owned a store in a coal town, you aren't one of the people. That was a profitable, professional, and wealthy establishment. You didn't just work (real) hard and get there with extra elbow grease. You weren't going to save pennies in the mines and start a business. He says he's one of the people, he isn't. He's a spoiled upper middle class right wing Reagan youth.

Manchin would be replaced with someone far worse if he's take down.

On the other hand, Sinema can actually be replaced with someone less bad.

Also the huge thing with Manchin that differentiates him from the squad is he could jump sides to the Republicans any time. Biden polls something like 25% in Manchin's state. In Manchin's mind, the more progressives publicly badmouth him, the better.

But since he's technically a Democrat, having his otherwise useless ass in the party means the speakership is kept out of McConnel's hands for the time being.

I've had an epiphany recently that the reason right-wing media pushes the issue of left-wing "cancel culture" so hard is to tell their audience there is no escape.

Someone might be sitting on their couch one night watching Tucker, Tucker decides to push the envelope even further into "great replacement"/"white genocide" rhetoric, and the person on their couch recognizes it as neo-nazi language and realizes the conservative movement is going too far for them.

But just as they reach for the remote, Tucker says, "Not so fast, buddy, there is no home for you in the left. You have become one of the "cancelled," like me! They'll hate you and spit on you, so you have no choice but to stay with me. Where we go one we go all!"
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I feel like it's the opposite. It's a deflection to make it seem like they're being treated unfairly by intolerant authoritarians for some unspecified reason. Because pushing back by making a case to defend the things people find objectionable about what they're saying is kind of impossible. They all signed up to be loyal patriots fiercely defending a constitution that says they're legally being total dicks.

Gives them something to talk about other than the actual thing at hand. Same with getting worked up about antifa and pretending it's anything other than a bunch of angry young randos in hoodies.

Yeah, it's no different from snarling at "gross hippies" and calling people against the Vietnam war anti-american terrorists. Different day, same shit. Like with "cuck" and whatnot, it's all a rotation of slurs and fears when the old slurs and old fears lose their impact.

People who think with their guts, people who think with their brains; the media reaches down and works to find and bring out the worst of them and get them engaged in the political process.

I remember this time I was at a library with my ex, and I pulled out a book on Obama's First Year (new, at the time!) to skim and she laughed, she laughed, at me for being such a nerd.
_____

Talking about anti-Vietnam war, I was skimming the soundtrack of Answer the Call the other day, trying to give that project some chance to show some worth. The Walk the Moon Ghostbusters cover, isn't bad and probably the best thing to come from that endeavor. However, the rest of the soundtrack is quite wretched. It particularly has the worst version of American Woman I've ever heard.

True as this is, the fact of the matter remains that the entire concept of "compromise" that he hangs his hat on is rendered completely meaningless as long as the unwritten rules remain "'centrists' on the left need to be de facto members of the opposition, while 'centrists' on the right only need to occasionally mumble non-committal pleasantries while racking up voting records in line with their party's hard-liners". I suppose this would be a good time to note that, in the wake of Manchin killing the For the People Act, the GOP has also swiftly killed both the infrastructure bill and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, which Manchin supposedly supports in lieu of the FTPA. Eagerly awaiting his next pants-on-head op-ed in defense of further inaction on his part.

If Manchin or any other "problem solvers" actually wanted to "bring Republicans to the table" they would be positively chomping at the bit to reform or eliminate the filibuster, and that would just be the start; as has been detailed exhaustively by now, under the current system the GOP enjoys an enormous default advantage both electorally and legislatively, as aptly demonstrated by their ability to effortlessly cripple so much of Biden's agenda even in the minority. Why in heaven's name would they want to "negotiate" anything when they're already holding so many of the cards, and their base is willing to set Washington on fire to make sure they get the rest? If you want to put modern conservatism in the mood to deal, you don't give them power, you take it away.

Stumbled onto Men at Work today. Haven't heard that in an age. Interesting how this new enlightened culture of young people wouldn't let their lead singer anywhere near stardom. Carry on. :-) You're shallow twats. You know that, right?

Are you talking about the Men at Work and the Colin Hay (the lead singer)?

What kind of stardom are you talking about? Are you trying to say the band should be more popular? I feel like their singles are fairly well represented on classic rock stations and background music mixes. Who Could it be Now? and Land Down Under are probably pumped on the air multiple times daily.

I had no idea who those songs were by and I liked it that way. But now you've brought them more fully into my conscious socio-cultural awareness and it's all ruined.

I swear, if you tell me who sang 'Baby I Love Your Way' or what Dan Fogelberg is we might have to take this to the streets. Where I will call you on the phone and then leave you on hold with a looping scratchy recording of "In the House of Stone and Light."

I'm a genre purist. Unless you are wearing a captain's hat or have a yacht in your video, you're not yacht rock, you're just another adult contemporary Ja Rule wanksta.

I guess you can be singing on a tropical beach with the breeze blowing through your hair, but I have to believe that you mean it.

So, just to make this absolutely clear...

I will be 41 soon and I always had this thing for Yacht rock, and well, I even know Benny Sings (I mean, I was studying in NL in the same city as him and we were acquainted, more like).
Not exactly Yacht rock, but I do own a few Steely Dan LP's, even (OK, re-prints, life is complicated and all that yadda yadda).

You guys cool with that, or do I need to oil my brass knuckles and we meet at the usual place to...uh, "discuss"?
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

I'm guessing it's the Secret Paedo Triangles hidden in the wood. Kinda like how people larp that the "okay" hand gesture is racist, Karens are desperate to find Paedo Infiltrator Boogeymen hidden in all media for some reason.

This would be the correct answer. And it's not just Veggie Tales. Satanic missing children milk cartons are finished too:

you got that part here "the other way around" (honest/serious)
Sengoku Strider wrote:"Honest" is a complicated question I can't answer; people often sell their daydreams as experienced realities because it's something they're trying to believe, and finding like-minded people helps validate them. Some people can have genuine visions for a whole host of reasons.

However, if you ask me are these people serious? Yes, completely. For sure there are trolls on these forums messing around with these people. But the reptilian thing is one of the all-time greatest hits of conspiracy theories.

David Icke came up with it in the 1980s, and it caught on in those circles because it rang true. People have been getting to the top of the social pyramid for as long as there has been one in part due to a reptile-like cold blooded ruthlessness and lack of empathy.
