You do see and hear the things the libertarians and righties love about Nietzsche, right?

yes, it tends to drive me nuts. nietzsche abhorred capitalism, consumer culture, the west, etc. there's a lot of 'big-brained' ayn rand sycophants latching onto his preaching the power of the individual through particular quotation without context... and without realizing he would probably despise them as tools who ultimately stifle others by both enabling and gladly submitting to structures of insane subjugation. i'm sure he's rolling in his grave. jesus, i bet even ayn rand is rolling in hers.

ftr, i don't *completely hate* american libertarians and can often talk with them a bit and be on friendly terms because of agreeing on personal freedoms (luna, who usually refers to me as her wife, is good friends with a couple at work! lol). hell, i get along with them better than marxist/leninist/maoist leftists. i just think they get woo'd by randian rhetoric of imagining this incredible free market of motivated people living their fullest when the reality is that capitalism is a system that is engineered to crush the human spirit more and more efficiently based on the size of the population participating in it. they also tend to agree with the ideal of promoting & creating meaningful art and then their heroes are dumbfucks like joss whedon.... poor saps lol.

Quote:
I'm just not a big fan of "Don't Be Evil" liberalism/activism. That's such a good phrase, because Google has managed to perfectly model everything that brand represents as it ages and gets wealthy.

yes. it communicates nothing meaningful and brands preaching it ultimately turns it into "don't be what society disapproves" - as if that message wasn't drilled hard enough into our skulls from birth.

Yeah I can enjoy Lovecraft mythos while not subscribing to all of his ideas. That's just common sense but you know, people are idiots.

A lot of our fiction depicts violence as the ultimate solution and pushes hard on individual exceptionalism. So it's no surprise guys like Orson Scott Card are kind of monsters - to write stuff like this well, it helps that you're deeply on board with the themes. Robert Kirkman ends every single one of his series the same exact way: the main character becomes a king of some group of badasses and they make everything all better because the main character is just that good and pure and everyone serving him is just that loyal and they punch juuust the right people to death. Quite frankly cultists willingly having sex with fish is way more interesting and less aggressively propagandistic than that.

Of course the leftist violent fantasy world involves a lot of main characters dying and passing the baton on constantly... Even a 50/50 win ratio would strain credulity.

This old video essay on how the movie Sky High is about a fascist utopia is a decent enough primer on the subject, though I'm sure it's obvious in how "bad guys" are constantly dehumanized in media.

This has been my blog post about how much I hate Fire Emblem when they have all the bandits be ugly axe schmucks you mow down in waves with your beautiful bishonen sword prince (aka, whatever the current Marth clone is).

I actually think Fire Emblem might be the least egregious example of this. Three Houses not only humanizes its antagonists, it saves its best route for letting you play as them. It also goes out of its way to show how petty, corrupt, savage and inhuman even its pretty sword-boy aristocrats can be under the heroic facade. Even the DLC is entirely about characters forced to hide in squalor by the church because they were rejected or abused by aristocracy. And the bandits, at least in story missions, are almost invariably shown as being manipulated and taken advantage of by the first or second estate in one form or another. They're also frequently given motivations related to starvation or as forced into banditry by war.

Best description of Libertarians I've heard recently was "failed republicans".

Or perhaps "Libertarianism. A simple-minded right-wing ideology ideally suited to those unable or unwilling to see past their own sociopathic self-regard.”. ― Iain Banks, Transition (Iain Banks was a self-proclaimed socialist, though. Iain M. Banks, a self-proclaimed prophet of The Culture).

Re: Lovecraft. It may be of interest to you that I received a Chinese translation of some of his works from my colleagues (I currently work at CCNU, Wuhan) because they know that I am some kind of "SF fan"). I carefully explained that I was surprised to see some of his early, racist and reactionary work translated, but also happy that the curators explained this in the introduction. I also saw several translations of Japanese and French graphic novels dedicated to his works.

I have skimmed posts and I see that Kitten mentions this topic. Lovecraft started changing his mind on a number of topics in his twilight years (I would say 1930 onwards) and quite a few of his last stories display a less lame-ass reactionary attitude and a more intriguing cosmological view because of this. The Shadow Out of Time strikes me as a perfect example (I adore the Great Race of Yith, by the way), since it is basically a story about scholars willing to time- and body-travel to obtain knowledge.

I also find it funny that there is a long list of left-wing writers who abhor his ideas and yet they are deeply influenced by his mythos (e.g. Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, China Mieville, etc. etc.). Really, anyone who is interested in creating fictional worlds and entire mythologies should at least acknowledge that his creative skills in world-building were phenomenal, considering the absurdly difficult conditions under which he wrote most stories.

Or maybe I just do not mind authors inserting tirades on their favourite topics in their works. As someone paid to do research (a "scientist") people who want to "prove" that political view X is "good" via works of fiction make me at most chuckle, a bit.

I am quite tempted to buy a Chtul...Ctul...whatever the fuck is written (Cthulhu! Ftagn!) statue for my office, though. Students who misbehave will end up as plankton for HIS resurgence from R'Lyeh, dammit.

Alan Moore did a few books that are straight up in the lovecraft mythos, I think it's the second or third one that has explicit fishman sex in it, it's very unsexy.

Author ideology does permeate any work whether they're conscious of it or not. I'm mostly into rationalist web fiction these days, as it's the only thing with enough depth to make me feel anything anymore. (Web fiction is basically the equivalent of old pulp fiction on meth, just so much stuff.) Since it's usually not light fluff, the author's worldview inevitably seeps through. (Usually it's just bog standard liberalism, as that's the default mold we're all groomed into.)

One of the more comical examples of libertarian bible thumping is The Irregular at Magic High School, a story about how just being that darn smart can more than make up for having almost no magical power ("magical power" being a metaphor for money, social connections, a whole and healthy body, etc.) and how it's alright to fuck your sister ("sister" being a metaphor for your sister).

To merely dismiss libertarians as "republicans who want to smoke pot" belies a deep lack of curiosity, Bill Maherian style. Maurice Gravel (a large proponent of direct democracy) once tried to run for the libertarian presidential nomination, and came in a distant third. The woman in second place, well... One of her big policy positions was to eliminate the minimum age of consent. So... there's many different factions of libertarians.

I like the ones who put ending imperialism as a major goal - that's something the liberals and fascists aren't interested in, at all.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the ideas of ancient dead guys, not even everyone's hero Diogenes. Have I been wrong in thinking that Nietzsche's ubermensch would be someone able to hold values independent of society, like the kind of person who could wander off and be an ascetic monk and not need external validation, that kind of thing?

yes, very much, the man was obsessed with internal validation. nietzsche's idea of personal liberation was popular with certain leftists because it's a bit less individual exceptionalism, much more internal validation, belief in oneself, and rejection of groupthink. right-wing thinkers like rand think there are objectively better and worse people, nietzsche kind of defied the usual political classifications (i'd say his anarchism positioned him a bit left, though he didn't like much to do with politics or society, at all) and believed in revolution through radical self-love and understanding as a key life priority. he put heavy emphasis on developed interiority.

to grab a quick quote from a wikipedia article -

Image

i'm no nietzsche expert, but he's commonly misunderstood in these days. a lot of people who selectively quote him are right-wingers who are obsessed with the idea that they have some sort of innate superiority to others, when in reality they would not meet nietzsche's high standards self-understanding required to be actualized individuals. he's often characterized as preaching selfishness and superiority, when the truth is that he was often trying to spread the word to as many as possible that a state of superior being exists by measure of acknowledging oneself as meaningful and allowing the worldly to matter. you can probably quickly understand how right-winged morons are attracted to his ideology, because they're always looking to see themselves as above others through any measure, and nietzsche was heavily focused on trying to get people to value themselves. most people eagerly quoting him these days would disgust him.

Incidentally, ACA: Sunset Riders is in fact mildly censored. SCALPEM is now WAMPUM, even in JP ver. No more "Die, gringo" either - EL GRECO now says "Adios amigo!" on entry and departure. Bit odd but so is he, giving away hats and shit. I couldn't hear shit in the arcade BITD, so I didn't even notice the latter. But despite these MUCHO SIMPATICO changes... I remember El Greco saying "Adios Amigo!" both times on the cab I credit-fed through as a child, but that might be an implant by the sjw's to make me and my frogs gay.

Clearly the rot was always there, right from Kunio-kun and the title character's abused little homie. Ginger-on-ginger violence? Way to work those stereotypes, Technos. Image

Pictured: a diverse crowd of concerned citizens attempts to apprehend a half-naked, fare-dodging Tom Selleck cosplayer, earlier seen consuming copious amounts of hard liquor and red meat. He would later invade a private rooftop apartment with his two accomplices, where they shoved a wheelchair-bound man out a window to his death.

EDIT: I just noticed the person Cancel Bro is responding to is one "SigourneyBeaver." THATS DESPICABLY SEXIST :O SHE IS STRONG BRAVE WIMMEN ACTRESS, SHE IS MORE THAN JUST HER BEAVER (famously ogled by the camera - and audiences worldwide - in 1979's Alien! Image)

Speaking of Nintendo, I've no way to check but I'm genuinely curious if Nintendo's Switch release of Gunbird 2 censored the infamous 2 player co-op endings with Aine.

If anyone ever asks me what Final Fight is about I'm going to give this response word for word.

When i met their dad he said to keep them busy.

They wanted to take a picture with me when they left but they weren't allowed to stand anywhere near, not social distancing this was pre-covid, but because religion of course.

Cringe as fuck photo taken. huge gulf of space between us, my hands clasped awkwardly in front.

I consider this repost of someone else's work my violent revenge for Bob getting Cuties songs stuck in my fucking head.

Spoiler: show
Image

Poor Bobbu-san. He fancies himself a writer but is shit with words. :[ I'm pretty sure most healthy grown men could accomplish that fateful bet (I sure as fuck could Image), but it'd be more task than meal, and lethargy, bellyache and elephantine shitting/racehorse pissing would ensue. That's a significant amount of food for your typical human's system!

...unless you're used to being sluggish, achy, and demolishing the bathroom like a large animal. :o

Reminds me of Ian Fleming's Doctor No, where Bond consumes an opulent full-course meal with several drinks, then hops out his window, hang-shimmies the ledge, and does badass super spy stuff before giving Ursula Andress mind-blowing sex, before departing for Evil HQ. A food writer tried the meal and all he could do was sleep and fart. Bond's livelihood demands eating and fucking like a champ! Then breaking one KGB assassin's neck while shooting another in the nuts and stomping on 'em, proffering a headshot for INFORMATIONS Image Image

...then again, Bob famously considers himself a Rambo-meets-Tesla Renaissance Ubermensch (and fitness guru). Maybe he's really just that manly. :o

Well, this election year, I'm giving Bobbu-san my vote for best internet clown. Getting fired after useful idiot-ing Cuties was only the prelude to what's been a rousing surprise rally. He didn't even need to resort to his old standby of calling for the systematic extermination of people he doesn't like!

The humans of the 21st century abandoned a horrible weapon in space.
This mistake has returned to haunt us in the form of social media.

Pathos Bobbu:

Spoiler: show

What recent event could have brought this on??? :o

How do you feel now that it's all over?
Your games all melted under the sun
Just like a kid, take a trip down to the sea
Stuck out in the middle and there's just nothing left to say

I told a young internet friendo: limit posts about posters, yourself included. Post about your hobbies and interests. Fantasising about murdering uncouth jocks and fucking their grateful women isn't a hobby, it's public masturbation.

The /shumpg retards have a similar problem. They never shut the fuck up about themselves or others. If you are a social media exhibitionist who's had a chilling moment of clarity, like Bobbu, take this opportunity to step back. Or at least don't go postal, we all know you mongs have a track record of that.

Don't take this as a cancel call, I enjoy social media self-defenestrations like Chris Chan enjoys Sanic. Just sayin, if you can get out, you should. Image

That is legit great advice doc. people would be better off following that, and the world would be a better place

And Good Lemmy I could never see myself participating in twitter debates/huge public socio-political discussions and witch hunts. I got enough drama in discussions IRL, I can't see myself take part of these global worlwide banters. it stresses me just thinking aboot it

besides, peoples opinions are set and don't change, so it's just a waste of your time to bicker on twitter

I can barely handle FB where I only follow what's going on in the province over here (mostly my region) and even on there I don't post socio-political stuff cause it's just a negativity source, which in turn angers me and bums me out. real deppressing stuff :?

The /shumpg retards have a similar problem. They never shut the fuck up about themselves or others. If you are a social media exhibitionist who's had a chilling moment of clarity, like Bobbu, take this opportunity to step back. Or at least don't go postal, we all know you mongs have a track record of that.

i think people talking about themselves is cool, but the tendency to narrativize oneself as an extremely capable and unjustly maligned protagonist - a 'victim' or noble iconoclast - is what is specifically toxic. peeps like bob know which way the wind is blowing and that the rhetoric of subtweeting people and framing them as abusive (accusing a celebrity of gaslighting him lol) is how most culture vultures on that side of the line worm their way out of a situation or establish their power. i'm sure he's clowned on countless easy targets to signal his politics as 'woke' and is finally just getting done in now that he thinks himself a victim and lacks the proper attributes to get away with being on top in this interaction. wouldn't be surprised if he "opens up" about mental illness or whatever sympathetic vector his tanking brand feels it needs to, soon e__e

little anecdotes and stories make it fun to talk to pals on the computer. things like playing games with friends and family and loved ones, little stories about good times, the occasional self-deprecating little snippet... dogmatic accusations, rhetoric, and assertions make things miserable for everyone. i think your advice is mostly spot-on but i'd mostly just suggest humility over a tight lip. making friends is fun! even on forums.

Oh no, anecdotes and such are great (within sensible limits, of course - much like IRL).

Bob's book ("SMB3: Brick By Brick," ISBN 9780615806105) is a neat case study. Bob's a big Mario fan, he says. Alright, cool! SMB2j is some rugged stuff. I've drifted away from SMB3, though. To tell you the truth Bob, while SMB1 was my first videogame, Contra, Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden stole my attention soon after, with their singularly aggressive vision of the scrolling action/platformer. Contemporaneously, Life Force's autoscrolling meatgrinder taught me of yet deadlier quarry.

This early concept of the SMB mundane, the "beyond," and "beyond the beyond" continues to inform my gaming. I'm happiest in the middle space, only rarely venturing below or above, quickly getting my fill of leisure/punishment. (ooh! anecdotes >;3)

Compared to these games' arcade-derived intensity, SMB3 soon has me warping to World 8 for a bit more pace - by no means an uncommon sentiment in my hobbyist circle. However, Bob calls SMB3 the greatest game ever made. Let's get his perspective, and see why he's so smitten.

(Bob likens SMB3's reveal in "The Wizard" to JFK's assassination and the September 11th attacks)

Oh! :O Well that explains a lot.

(Bob likens his witnessing of the SNES/Genesis rivalry to serving in Vietnam)

Bob I think you are speaking shit to me. >_>

(Bob ditches his grandma's funeral to play SMB3)

Bob I can't take this drip-feed, I need your wildly misjudged writings injected directly into my bloodstream. Do you have a twitter?

(Bob suggests Germany invade Poland again, exterminating the correct people this time)

Bob, y u delet, it was joke rite :[

(Bob castigates gamers for lacking fitness standards)

Bob u madman :O

(Bob announces he has developed Type 2 Diabetes)

Bob that shit can make you blind, as a fellow gamer I'm telling you to sort it out. :/

(BOBBU_SAN'S HEART IS BROKEN BY HOT DOG GIRL)

Aha. So that's why SMB3 is the greatest game ever made. Image
