What no cuphead?

Post by dmk1198 »

Loved finding this group
Got me right back into shmups
Rediscovered old gems
And found plenty new ones to
Just realised not seen cuphead mentioned once here anywhere
Any reason?
Surely in top 300 list it would get a mention lol keep shooting! X

It's a run n gun, not a shmup proper, right?

Also: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=50599

I will say that Cuphead is probably the only modern game that makes me want to emulate Windows, as it's not available for Steam Play (which, yeah I know is a type of Windows emulation).

The top 300 list is a top list of shoot'em ups though, so even if Cuphead was on that level it would have no place in that. While run'n'guns have an obvious tight connection to the shmup genre, and generally appeal to the same people here, it makes sense to put it in a different category for a genre top list, as well as subforum categories.

If you look around the forum you'll see Cuphead actually mentioned quite often, and usually to positive comments which is rare for a western developed run'n'gun. The dedicated thread to the game is linked by o.pwuaioc just above here.

I think you need to hone your google skills. :)

For what it's worth, Cuphead does have a handful of exclusively shmup stages (in a plane).

It's a gorgeous game but it's more a run and gun than a shmup.

The hori-shump levels are delightful - one of them is a clear love letter to the Parodius eagle boss but they are pretty much by-the-numbers play-wise. Enjoyable though :)

Moving this over to Off Topic.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Is there a topic that lists games that are not shmups but have minor shmup levels in them? I can think of several run and gun games with minor shmup level segments (Moo Mesa, Gun-Dec, etc). If not, we could turn this thread into that :P

It's been awhile, but a quick search turned up three of them.

Hm, I'm tempted to actually condense all the known games into a proper, easily readable table format or something. There's really a lot of them out there!

Is Guardian Legend a shooter with adventure levels or an adventure game with shooting levels?

Seconding this idea. There was another thread like this for the Sega Saturn only.

You know, I really believed this game was NEVER coming to the PS4.

It is currently downloading to my PS4.

It's generally referred to as an adventure game/shmup hybrid. The shmup levels are numerous and integral to the game, not just a couple oddball levels thrown in to break up the pace of the main gameplay.

The unlockable shmup stages only mode counts as a pure shmup, albeit not one with a worthwhile scoring system.
