SEGA announces the Astro City Mini

Post by Specineff »

Hot on the heels of the Genesis Mini, Sega announces the upcoming release of a mini version of its venerable Astro City cabinet, loaded with lots of Sega goodness, for a total of 36 arcade games, including:

Alien Syndrome
Alien Storm

MOTHER****ING GOLDEN AXE: THE REVENGE OF DEATH ADDER  :!:
Columns II
Dark Edge
Puzzle & Action: Tant-R
Virtua Fighter
Fantasy Zone
Altered Beast

HDMI out, Micro Switch joystick, headphone jack, USB micro port. To be released at the end of the year in Japan, at around 12,800 Yen/USD 120. Source: Nintendo LIfe.

I have no faith in the TV out to have good scaling options (none of those mini systems do) but aside from that, this has me really interested!

At least it's not an analog pad pretending to be digital.

Now we just have to wait to see who is in charge of the emulation. Wouldn't be suprised if it's M2. the game list is quality for sure, wish it was a little bigger, maybe more games will be announced at a later point. Some VF2 would be real nice

I hope VF2 is on it, but it does have a nice port on 360.

I mean, does anybody think it's not going to be M2?

Then again, the mini-mega drives seem to be on a $50 perma-sale. Meaning that they made too many. I really hope they decide to cut costs by producing less, and not by skimping on the emulation.

(imho they'll produce less. Nu-Sega have proved themselves to be pretty savvy. So I think they're well aware that if they got anybody but M2 to do the emulation, people will flip their respective wigs)

It's already been announced that it's not.

Didn't like the idea of the Neo geo mini being in a mini cabinet.

This is a nice prop for your gaming room but I would never play it.

That lineup really is kinda rough. Dark Edge looks cool as hell, but that game blows, and many of the rest they've revealed so far are just okay.
Still, at the same time, a lot of Sega's most classic arcade games also don't have normal buttons+stick controls, so what would otherwise be obvious picks can't and won't show up.

New 13 titles from the line up announced today :

A bit disappointing in my book...

There's not another game extremely similar to Cyber Police, is there? Or some BS dipswitch settings? My faulty memories recall playing it as a kid in the arcade, and there was a robot panther boss that didn't die even after taking dozens and dozens of hits. Also do not recall the armor the protagonist wore being as frumpy. I know most of that is likely memory drift, but I'm confident about the cat refusing to die in any reasonable timeframe. Anytime I'd look into the game over the years, I'd see any cat bosses do not take a ridiculous number of hits to kill.

Mandela effect, where the simulation changed some stuff?

Yeah, I was initially interested about this, but the game lineup just isn't coming together. Does it really need two Columns and two Puzzle & Action titles?

Gain Ground is seriously included? The arcade game uses a vertical monitor. So, does that tiny cab actually have a rotatable screen? Or is it just going to have black bars on the sides? Meaning probably too tiny to actually play without the external HDMI...

Not to mention that Crackdown has ant sized sprites even on a 29'' monitor. Can't imagine that being playable on a 4'' screen.

Remember when these compilations were on a retail release for current gen consoles instead of gimmicky overpriced mini hardware?

Is it too much to ask to release a compilation with Alien vs. Predator on it? Another with Revenge of Death Adder? Shouldn't need to be played on weird hardware in this day and age.

That said... go play Gain Ground.

The image of playing this thing in 'tate mode along with all of your fingers being 1" away from each other makes me smile. The mini arcade thing isn't seriously meant to be played right? It's just like old ladies collecting miniature statues of cats - a knick knack?

It seems like the Neo Geo X way of selling emulation boxes has been abandoned wholesale.

They've got TV out and options for separate controls, but these really are meant to be more novelty than anything else.
Also, that lineup is depressing, but again, the bulk of Sega's top-notch arcade releases weren't ever really joystick+buttons games.

Now I'm dreaming of a mini cab of Space Harrier Deluxe

I second that, and I'm pretty sure Puyo Puyo 2 will be announced in the final batch, maybe Tetris (the one running on SEGA SYSTEM 16A) and Alex Kidd The Lost Stars... VF2 should be in the final lineup.
In the end, there are very few sexy games (Golden Axe RODA is the only one so far). Because of licence issues, Spiderman and Moonwalker will not be in, I'm afraid :(
Crossing fingers for Arabian Fight and... Segasonic The Hedgehog, Rad Mobile, Outrunners if Sega may adapt the controls to the gamepad.

Have to agree as I still play it quite a bit and its held up well.

I remember playing Crack Down eons ago too but didn't play it all that much.
