It's not. And if you're trying to time it out, you're doing it wrong. I actually moved some stuff recently (not all) to stocks thinking it had bottomed out and it hadn't. But it's a retirement fund... I can't touch it for a minimum of 15 years. It will likely go up and down again at least once before then.

I am not sure that I getting right the shade of "time it out" meaning you have in mind now. What I am doing is just to carefully wait and see when it might be opportune to move money from one account to the other, based on 10-year trends (too short?) and other factors.

I have dedicated services from each bank that allow me to check "how much" I have once I put all the money together, so oscillations are sometimes scary, but that is the way this type of life works, right?

And then, for very complicated reasons you can actually guess, I will have a (small) retirement salary in Sweden after 65, with the [/i]proviso[/i] that I have a bank account there.

I could move that to the newly formed "European fund" for workers moving within the EU and countries with specific agreements with the EU. Being very careful and very patient has become a survival skill, I guess (notifications on exchange rates and trends do help).

Crucially, the current situation in China has created a sudden interest of the government in handing green cards/Permanent residentships to skilled workers (and the locals were not happy...), and a speeding up of agreements that would allow me to obtain something akin to a 401k here in China (I am a civil servant, anyway), which *might* be even transferrable to EU once I am done.

Again, the top university in Wuhan seems willing to offer me *a lot* of stuff to accept the job they offered me, given the situation at hand (PM if you want to have a laugh, I will try to behave on this).

The Chinese government is almost *forcing* companies, especially foreign ones, to accept financial support ("or else", if I am reading the consulate papers right).

What I am seeing at various levels is a general scramble to various haphardazous decisions to avoid panic, because crises are 99.9% self-inflicted panic and 0.1% actual problems. I must admit that I may heavily profit from it.

Of course you may wonder where the Chinese government may take all this money from. However, magically pulling money out of government asses seems to be the new black for governments.

Anyway, once we will be dead because of a flu originating from bats, debts should also disappear.

"Timing the market" means trying to do what a trader does (with a shit load of information and computation). IE, if someone bought a bunch of stock today since we had the biggest single-day drop since 1987. There's a very good chance it'll go lower so not a good idea. Any financial adviser worth their salt will tell you to make a commitment to some type of instrument (usually a fund), put it in and leave it there.

Well, the only money I ever use is the one in the account in the country I currently live in, and even with that one I tend to be...wise. This is not a lifestyle built for splurging (none is, really), and I own a house, back in the homeland (EDIT: and a lot of collectibilia that could be sold off for an emergency, eh!).

I may turn one of the EU accounts into an investment fund (you mean one of these, right?) if the situation in the next few months becomes what I believe it will become (well-paid tenure+bonuses). That will however happen once I can sit down with an adviser, in person, and I know that I can trust the advice.

This, provided that nobody lynches me because I am bringing back CoVID-19 from Italy or something, of course. I am using my Swedish ID card for identification purposes as a safety measure and I am really tempted to get a second passport from my other nationality, because I already had an accident over this. Nobody would ever think that I might be an Italian, given my accent...

Do I sound like one of those "wandering capitalist" loonies? Apologies if I do.

'Timing the Market' - heard it all before - same goes for those wishful thinking middle-class folks back in the UK trying to 'time the Mortgage Market'. It's all rather laughable.

Best advice: split what you invest in, and have nerves of steel. I don't worry and simply take what I can along the way.

Also, don't follow the buzz and advice bestowed on the masses. There are people who devote a very good chunk of their time to finding things out for themselves and this I feel is the only way.
Only invest in what you know about and can understand.

I foresee a rather large change in how 'wealth' is treated as we all get older and live longer. I can very much so envisage the wealth-tax hitting a lot of people in the UK for example. They've already clamped down on those who own more than three properties as it is. But, I have to say that it's not going to do much good for people my age; we've already lost a lot paying very high-end rents against low incomes for the most part - another reason that I left the UK incidentally.

I've seen stocks and assets drop big time lately and, well, I welcome what it brings :)

Well chaps, the plague has officially hit the sleepy hamlet of Tinkletowne. Or at least you would think it had! Not a roll of TP to be found in the local supermarket! I suspect more than one unlucky sod will be squatting behind the bushes of Rumpypumpy Ave. this windy night, perhaps equipped with a purloined doormat. They were also clean out of Jack, V8 juice and tinned tomatoes - I blame the former on dolescum and the latter two on the Italians. If I do not survive on account of the old DTs, please give my account to one "Edmond Dantes," an old friend and lover of fiery disposition.

Yeah, I wasn't even thinking last week when I bought some and it was low, then it hit me the next day hearing people talk about it. Got a confirmed case in my neck of the woods now. My Ma texted me and told me the shit has already hit the fan and the shelves are completely dry, lines of cars waiting to get in. I just want my frozen pizza, man.

A site of Otakus weeaboos and you do not even own a Japanese-style comfy toilet? Shame on you, people!

Drauch: necks of the woods are bad for diffusion. Gloves and mask are already fine, but if you are in that kind of situation in which generally meeting people is not a frequent event, you can also mentally check distance. Honestly, beyond 1 metre of distance, contagion is -100% likely (you may play DD's "the woods" if you go for a walk, though).

Bill: kids can be healthy carriers, apparently. Seniors, avoid them because they could get infected by kids and other carriers.

It turns out that I know people who are infected, and one of them has already healed but has seen two seniors dying from it, both in their mid-80's (86 and 84, the older one having cardiac and pulmonary ongoing issues...).

If complications do not arise, it can be a particularly nasty flu. Imagine 2-3 weeks with fever, joint pains and no medicine being remotely effective: only way is sweating it out, old school. The cyclist Fernando Gaviria (positive) posted about it, on some social.

If complications arise, then it can be fatal quickly. Do keep in mind that "complications" also includes, well, old age. If you are so much in bad shape to be like an 80-year old geezer, get worried. In general, not just for this mess.

For greetings, you may try out Vulcan's "long live & prosper", if somebody insists on handshakes, and say that you're a trekkie [/geek].

Important issues: if you can work from home, do so. Not having obnoxious colleagues wasting your work time will be a bless. Once done with work, it's gaming time in 60 seconds sharp.

The Milan municipality is collecting data on this matter and it turns out that employers working from home seem to be more productive than the usual (hear, hear).

Also, eat healthy. Take some damn vegetables as toppings, once in a while!

I started eating a lot healthier last year and it made a big difference. No longer being obese has helped in many ways and I'm sure helps out in some way here. Hopefully I just avoid it entirely, haven't had a truly bad bug in awhile now.

Due to my long overdue wisdom teeth removal I am very limited on diet atm. Hoping by the end of next week I'll be able to eat w/e.

Smart move Boss! Medical professionals worldwide concur that the #1 risk of death in men = dick doesn't work. Trimming down with a sensible diet, ideally paired with moderate exercise, is excellent for cardiopulmonary function, hormonal balance, quality of sleep, and many other wiener-relevant things!

I have faith that if we keep our dicks up throughout this crisis, shumps forum can survive - even if E3 does not! Aloof survival is kind of our thing after all! Image

For real. A bidet attachment costs all of $30 that you can install yourself with an adjustable wrench and socket set. Three digit sums if you're in dire need of a luxury model with heated seat, water heater, pump, etc. Trivial money if you're already dealing with arcade boards, RGB modded game systems and BVM/PVMs.

I loathe staying anywhere other than my home because North America is a bidet-less, uncivilized wasteland.

Hell yeah man. It was getting bad, got depressed after someone died and kinda ballooned up. These days, I'm just a bit over where I want to be.

I've moved into a place with a fucking douche hose coming out of the wall

The water pressures so high tho my entire arse was soaked and i didn't have a towel in the bathroom so what do??
put underwear back on and have a damp azz for the next few hours.

(i've since realised the trick is to bunch up some toilet paper and lightly DAB your rim and gooch so the paper doesn't disintegrate)

The UK government would like that have the UK population to obtain "herd immunity", and have the contagion to spread but slowly.

How does herd immunity work?

Well, you vaccinate most of the population, with the actual vaccine.

The government thinks that Britons are tough enough to develop the vaccine themselves by, well, contracting the virus and recovering from it, from what I can read.

Good luck with that. Maybe you could sell your own blood on ebay/Alibaba once healed..."100% original stiff upper lip, #1 leading source on the CPS-changer, CoVid-19-resistant blood! No cucks here, brexit means brexit! We won one world cup!".

The "Keep Calm and contract CoVid-19" posters would be rad.

Can't believe these saps reassured by the presidential address smdh.

The pessimistic death toll in the US is estimated to be over a ~million when this finally burns out right? As they say in the youtube forums: "I dislike a 1% chance of missing a shot when I'm playing X-Com, let alone a 1% chance of ___________."

BryanM, if people do absolutely nothing to prevent contagion. Which is to say, your government is trying to scare masses into taking care of themselves and doing the basics right, like cleaning hands and stop french-kissing randomly suspicious strangers.

Here in the UK, it's the same thing.

Government has put in measures to delay spread via frequent handwashing when convenient, public places and retail stores staff wear gloves, cleaning surface areas that people may repeatedly touch daily. People over 70 are advised to self isolate if possible. Shoppers are panic buying in the event of a national lockdown although unlikely to be inforced unless there is a huge spike in deaths. Government has accepted that virus will spread and that those who are infected can recover from a mild form of the infection.

I just carry on as normal but just be extra cautious and try and maintain boosting my own immune system to fight any threat of infection.

This reminds me:

If you guys know seniors and want to be of any help, you can arrange ways to get them groceries without contact (e.g. buy food, leaving it outside the door, cleaning up grocery bags once they are in, etc.).

If you have patiences of saints, you can even give them your whatsapp accounts (or whatever) and have a chat.

In this kind of situation isolation is absolutely devastating for seniors, as they can feel not simply abandoned but betrayed by society.

Even just talking to relatives who you normally cannot stand is good enough to improve the general morale (I mean, I talked *even* to my parents, go figure!).

Grocery shopping: once per week is enough. Life is too short to shop more frequently, flu or not flu. Besides, I will never believe that people on this forum actually cook (but freezing and de-freezing vegetables can easily do the trick, if you actually cook).

Mills: carry on, yes.

I did work and train (especially running) through the whole quarantine. Avoiding busy streets was easier for me, though.

Some extra layers of self-care are easy to follow and a duty towards others. It's an easily overcome hassle for some weeks, nothing more (and so on with the usual obvious notes).

Everyone : chill. Infection rate is like 10% and most will survive. SARs had a higher mortality rate but appears to have had a lower infection rate.

Berlin is on lock-down and many of us are rather bored having to stay in-doors, but that's just how it is for now.

Sick of the panic buying - have needed to go to the local supermarket almost every day in the past week just to piece ingredients together for meals. It's a nice little walk so it's not all bad.

In that time I have not seen a single packet of toilet paper on the shelf. I figure there's only a finite amount of storage space people can have for their TP so they have to stop bulk buying it soon... just hope that's before my supply runs out.

It's funny, because the bread is doing just fine and under normal conditions that runs out all the time. Might have to buy a loaf or two to wipe my arse with at this rate.

Now we've closed the gym.

As if this virus is more of a threat to me than the inactivity of driving a desk and not getting proper exercise.

Vaguely serious answer: there are numbers online, and you can check how and why the top honchos came out with those numbers. Tin-foil hat mode: models and stats leading to these numbers may have been "creative" because no threat of apocalypse looming=no washing of hands, shower at least every week, and so on.

Average age of the deceased in Italy is...80.9 years or so, with pregress illness (like, diabethes, heart conditions, etc. i.e. serious stuff). Average health conditions might be abysmal, but do you even have people that old, in the US?

Non-serious answer: I would practice your knowledge of pressure points, just in case, because getting toilet paper may become hard soon (you are an Hokuto person, right?). Or you can be a proper otaku and buy a bidet, what the fuck.

Besides, why you ask *me*? I wear garish t-shirts and a bad haircut, and I do not even coach Liverpoll F.C.!
