My theory on it has always been that people do or don't grow out of the selfishness of childhood to different degrees. The issue (in a very generalized sense) is that the world does not effectively teach children the path to emotional maturity.

But I digress, this is supposed to be about Covid.

Interesting take! Feels like greed to me, pure and simple. Stealing material property for quick $ I can fathom - stealing a family pet to sell to another unscrupulous (or unsuspecting) family I cannot wrap my head around.

This latest national lockdown is ... very difficult mentally. I'm not sure how much longer I can take this, I'm feeling as rough now as when I had a breakdown some years ago (work stuff). Fucking fascists. State media constantly broadcasting doom, government being evasive over questions about when it will even end, police being guided to be harsher to the point where they harass people doing innocent things like having a coffee and a walk. I don't even particularly want to be around groups of people, just some -illusion- of freedom would be enough. You know, being able to drive to the coast and look at the sea, then come back. Just anything except more of this.

People are getting crazier and it would be naive to expect otherwise.

A little under 2 weeks ago at 6am in the pitch dark, I heard a noise from our letterbox. This isn't unusual as sometimes spam leaflet distributors like to get it done when it's quiet. 10 minutes later I heard a more persistent noise, I went into the hall and found someone was trying to crush their hands through our letterbox while staring into the hallway. At some point they fell over and scratched a car I might be having to return. They also stood and clawed softly at the door, and even when I (in a raised voice) said I was calling the police to help them, there was no response at all, they just kept leaning on the door, clawing, then trying to climb through the letterbox again etc. As soon as I turned the light off they wandered away. Undoubtedly some kind of serious metal problem and/or drugs.

It's going to get worse, I live in a nice area. Stealing dogs doesn't even surprise me.

So i got first shot of Russian vaccine.
My temp jumped to 37.3-38.3, so far no other side effects.
It was only ~36 hours.

Second shot at 19.02

Heard from my folks that my sister (New Jersey) has tested positive for covid. She only has light cold like symptoms. No fever at all. This virus is a sneaky little shit.

Hope she makes out all right.

My smell and taste are returning, verrrrry slowly still. Plenty of specific flavors I still can't taste and smell is very faint, and at its strongest when something is steaming (must have something to do with the water vapor). It kind of sucks it's taking so long but I try to tell myself that I have far more now than I did at the start of the month when I was quarantining.

That does suck. Literally losing ones senses doesn't sound like any fun at all.

Good to hear that it's coming back though, that's at least the right direction.

I got Bells Palsy back in 2005. The first sign about 12 hours before I lost all mobility on the left side of my face was I lost the sense of taste. Three month later I regained about 85 - 90% of muscle use in my face and more importantly I could taste again. That entire time I was far more worried I wouldn't be able to taste than anything else.
My lord, I have come for you.

I consider this Covid related, because it's directly related to the effects of the lockdown.

Yesterday, the son of a friend took his own life as a result of metal distress over isolation. He was in school, and staying in a dorm. There wasn't any specific warning or unusual behavior. He was always a quiet kid, so I'm not surprised that he didn't try to reach out. I watched him grow up from the time he was just a baby, and he was as gentle of a soul as I have even known. We were not especially close, owing to his extreme shyness, but he was a part of our family circle, and it's tremendously sad for all of us.

If you have friends and family who you know to be less skilled in reaching out, perhaps consider contacting people that you would not normally. The winter, I believe, has been especially difficult, and the spring time is when this kind of tragedy often occurs.

It's a very hard line to walk, between giving quieter kids their space and making sure they're not suffering in that. My condolences bud.

Thanks. Yeah, it's hard to know if it's right to reach out or not, especially with the super introverts.

It certainly is forcing me to reevaluate my other relationships and think about anyone vulnerable that I might be forgetting about. It's just so easy to be swept away by my own isolation and my own pandemic inconveniences that I can easily forget to keep up with others who might be less equipped to handle the situation than I am.

Weird situation, waiting for a virtual funeral to start. Covid.

I got my two shots a few weeks ago, and today my dad just came back after his first shot. No clue when my mom will be able to get her vaccination.

For the record the second shot didn't seem to affect me until 12 hours later, when I suddenly started shivering like crazy and started feeling like absolute dog shit, which continued for the next 2 days.

Honestly the pandemic hasn't really affected my way of life too badly, but there are a lot of things I miss.
Spoiler
-Not having to constantly sanitize and decontaminate after having been outside to get groceries
-Not having to sanitize packages as they get delivered
-Not having to wear stuffy face masks
-Going to Round 1
-Playing Magic the Gathering at the local game store
-Visiting the Ocean City boardwalk, getting caramel corn and ice cream and crab fries and pizza and gyros and...
-Attending dungeons and dragons games in person at a friend's house and playing other board games with the group
-Going to another friend's house, ordering pizza and playing Smash
-Having that same friend come over to my house to play all my retro game stuff
-Eating out at restaurants
-Visiting the mall
-Going to TooManyGames [local retro gaming con]

I could go on for awhile.
Doesn't matter that I have my vaccine, can't do any of that stuff until everyone else is vaccinated.

I havent been called up for my jab.

I'm a bit skeptical about taking a vaccine for something I have zero symptoms for. I don't take insulin because I don't have diabetes, I am not swallowing aspirin/Tylenol because I don't have a headache.

Also, I don't know anyone who has had covid19 with serious symptoms. Old, young, distant, close by.. nobody. A few days at home in lockdown and they end up at work as normal.

I do lockdown though, I rarely go out and if I do I wear a mask and practice safe distancing. Because thats the least you can do.

Get it when it's your turn.

It's a preventative measure, so not at all like treating an existing condition. All the vaccine does is give you a stronger and more diverse version of the immune response you'd get naturally from catching the virus. With the added bonus that you won't get ill because it simulates enough of the virus without it being infectious.

Almost everyone will either get mild or no symptoms from covid-19. But you're still infectious for 2 days before developing symptoms, so you can easily spread it without knowing. Whether you become seriously ill is not just down to having pre-existing conditions, it's how your immune response may react - preliminary studies show this could be very granular in the immune system and not easy to predict. So do get the vaccine, because while unlikely you could still become seriously ill if you catch it.

Protect yourself, protect others. It's not a hoax or a scam, it's not dangerous.

This is a new virus and is dangerous because there's limited existing immunity and it hasn't fully adapted to human biology. So it causes adverse reactions in enough people that, when paired with no immunity to break infection chains, it does lead to a significant number of deaths.

At best, vaccination breaks infection well enough to eradicate the virus. At worst, it will allow it to be managed and mitigated in the same manner as seasonal flu.

Have you ever traveled to a developing cuntry and gotten a hepatitis vaccine? What about tetanus? Chicken pox, polio, small pox... or the myriad of vaccines you received as a child. Did you have symptoms for any of those? Do you wear condoms when you go to orgies?

I have a high school mate (a fucking running back who at least looks like he's in the same shape now as high school) who almost died. ICU for weeks. So yeah, roll the dice if you want. Just know that taking anecdotal evidence of the 50 people you know as gospel is what has gotten us into this fist fuck. I won't even go into what a slap in the face it is to people who have lost loved ones.

Please get your shot when you can.

You may not know anyone that's had serious symptoms, but something tells me someone knew the almost 3 million people that have already died.

Anybody trying to get the vaccine and can't? I can't get it around me (Philadelphia suburbs). Tried my primary care physician, then RiteAid and CVS (seem to be the only non-gov't non-hospital/doctor places that offer it, tried right after midnight like they say to try -when appts. evidentially reset- for a week straight now), and a couple different county and state gov't agencies/organizations which I'm signed up for... struck out with all of them. If I had a Philadelphia-proper address (I'm not in city limits) I could have gotten it at the Eagles stadium I think, but that's about it.

Getting my first shot this Saturday. I guess this means I will be able to start taking public transportation again in about a month.

Very weird feeling. Not that it's "over," but it will be closer to post-Covid life for me.

I am getting it at the Raven's stadium in Bmore. What you can do is call the appointment line and ask to find out if they have any cancelled appointments. Sometimes they have extra and they have to use it before it goes bad, so they might schedule you. They don't seem to care about the address on the phone that much here, just that you are in state (MD for me obviously).

I feel for you man. I hope you're doing all right.

A couple months later and I have a lot, though not all, of my taste and smell back. A few weeks ago I smelled a fire burning for the first time, which was a rare pleasure. A little while earlier it was almond butter.

Some things are not entirely the same; coffee grounds don't smell as 'good' as they used to, but that hasn't stopped me from being a caffeine addict. I kinda am hoping that I 'force' my body to remember the good smell the beans used to have for me.

I can't smell "bad" things yet, which is the weirdest. Skunks outside? Garbage? Literal shit? It hasn't registered. I mean, of all things concerned, that might be a blessing and make living in the city a little nicer lol. Though I nonetheless want that back; I feel like I am at an evolutionary disadvantage here. I guess I better find some willing ladies for those orgies Gaijin was talking about if smell ain't going to be an issue, eh? 8)

I on-and-off take the train, but my laziness is keeping me in a car more than I'd like to. I was always so anti-driving in the city during normal traffic times; now a 20 minute commute (previously: 60-75 min) is a serious competitor with an hour train ride. I guess going off the above, smells should not bother me on the train anymore LOL.

It really is the little things in life, right?

I am not blind to the fact that many people are dying, but since I am locked down I am the least likely person to need a vaccine. I will get my vaccine when asked to get it, as it is a requirement of my job.

At my job, there are cannisters of anti bacterial hand wash, about 50 bottles.. The days when people used it daily are long gone. I believe i've had Covid already, its just that the symptoms were relatively mild.

I get what you're saying about the vaccine. I took my mother to get hers when the age restriction was above 60's. I'm also seeing older people being shunned and younger people getting the vaccine in the UK, especially those who have diabetes and Crohn's disease. Right now though, I haven't been called up.
