No, avoid DOOM VFR as a first FPS experience. Play DOOM 2016.
Or if you want to go oldschool, classic Doom on PC with a source port. Or if you're playing on console, the latest Classic Doom pack Bethesda sells. It had issues at first but it's being polished up with extra content added (Final Doom and John Romero's Sigil).

Oh great tip, I almost bought VFR :/
I guess I'll stick to DOOM 2016 since I just want to try the genre on current gen.

I enjoyed Doom VR but my god did it make me ill at times. I'm still not 100% with faster-moving VR stuff.

So, after avoiding touching it for over a decade, I'm finally giving The Plutonia Experiment a go. And surprisingly, I do find it enjoyable and not too annoying so far. Of course, I know most of its tricks because of all the attempts I did throw at it in the past, but maybe trying out even tougher stuff over the years prepared me better for this kind of thing. Looks like I'm getting a taste for challenge in Doom as well.
