Battle Tryst on the 3DO M2 - new playthroughs 9/29!

Post by awbacon »

Not shmup related (so its in off topic obv, although the M2 still has my favorite shmup of all time) but I’ve been doing full character playthroughs of individual characters from Battle Tryst. Added a few more to my channel this week ; Kika and Nadjeed. Each character has an fmv ending movie which are awesome to watch and as far as YouTube goes have never been seen. So go watch :) sub if you want. But figured people on here would enjoy em!

Wow. Where do you find this stuff?

Was the M2 (was it called the bulldog at one point?) ever released?

Presuming you're playing on an emulator. Character design reminds me a bit of Last Bronx/Fighting Vipers.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

The best thing about this game is the ending credits animation directed by mamoru oshii

It was always M2, but the custom gpu was called Bulldog

It was released as a multimedia kiosk but not as a console. The kiosk hardware is just the console design in a bigger case. Same with Konami M2

Playing on original equipment. I’ve collected all five M2 games from Konami on original pcb’s with the original cds lol. Took foooorever!

Weirdly nostalgic, the M2. I remember all the talking up of it in the magazines at the time... I didn't know it'd actually made it out into the world, albeit arcade-only!

edit: and god damn, I just ran forehead-first into my own subconscious brain googling "M2 games" and getting the beloved emulation specialists.

It's a testiment to how old I am that I still get excited and hopeful when I hear anything about the M2...

Possibly time to give up the ghost now.

Lol what exactly are you waiting to pop up? Cause I feel like there is a lot for a “cancelled” system.

I mean there are six total games playable across two pieces of hardware...seven if you count the weird demo shmup. There are multiple pieces of kiosk software (I released a few at Xmas) as well. Granted they aren’t fun at all but if you want to check out a 2000’s era Oldsmobile it’s youe jam! Lolol

Only two “games” haven’t been publicallg released yet, and I’m working on making a deal always on software I don’t have. But things like D2 probably are “lost”...same as Power Crystal as well

The M2 version of D2 was such a weird game. It had almost nothing to do with the released Dreamcast version. IIRC, Laura got pregnant after the first D (can't remember if it was the same Laura or not), but her baby got stolen from inside her fetus by an aristocrat in the past who uses a magic spell to summon the developing past in his timeline and raised him as his own son and then she dies in a plane crash.

I don't know whether to consider Kenji Eno an auteur or a hack.

Very cool shit. Can you tell us anything about the process of procuring the hardware? I know it must have taken tenacity and quite a few dollars.

It took ten years total of searching, but that’s because I missed a bunch of opportunities due to bad timing.

I have nine M2’s now. I sold a one of a kind prototype graphics card to another collector since he wanted it and I wasn’t attached, so it used to be ten lol

They ranged in price from $500ish to absolutely free. A few were purchased broken but the fixes are very easy so luckily I brought three back to life.

I own one kiosk unit as well, which plays the two games that don’t run on the arcade variant

It’s been fun collecting it all. Check my YT if you want to see more...whole season of M2 stuff up :)

There are a few of the prototype M2 consoles floating around. I think the design is pretty cool, very 90s, kind of a fancy version of a PlayStation.

Image

Who wants to try and port the Konami games to the home system? :D

I’ve been trying to find the black model on the left for years with no luck. Funny thing is aesthetically it’s the most “console” looking setup of all M2, but due to the bios inside it plays the least amount of software due to encryption (which isn’t present on arcade models / the fz-35 kiosk model)

That doesn’t stop me from wanting it though lol. That shape!

I think scarcity is not the actual problem then.

The black model was released as a consumer kiosk for educational software, so its not scarce as in 'they only made ten" but it probably is scarce as in "businesses threw them away when done with them in the early 2000's, well before anyone knew what they were"

Aww @ Pastel's ending. Dem bells, any Twinbee player can relate. That's a very cool bit of STG-related media, thanks for sharing!

Fascinating and kinda melancholy, the legions of "orphaned" character designs that came out of the 90s SFII craze. Like a big bang preceding the stabilising of Capcom, SNK, Namco, Sega and the odd diehards like ASW by the turn of the century. Konami obviously threw some resources into this, getting Oshii onboard.

Does Elein, the Fairy from Gaiaoplis, have any connection to the characters in Twinbee Yahhoo with similar ears?

No.

But Shuzilow HA, the main artist for all the 90's TwinBee games since Detana! TwinBee, was the cutscene artist for Gaiapolis. Hence why the similar designs for the female characters.
