I was watching a 1cc on Very Hard of the arcade Zombie Revenge, and was getting a bit nostalgic. For a while, I was trying to 1cc it on the Dreamcast, and found the damage model to be very unforgiving. But, the 1cc plays I've found make it look quite doable, and looking at it now, maybe I wasn't blocking enough, etc. Reading a FAQ, there were a few things I didn't know before (like try to shoot WHEN the reticule flashes, not after), so I'm itching to try again :) I was also playing with Stick, who I guess is considered the worst character.

I do remember it being a better game than it got credit for, back when I was playing it regularly. It seems to have a moveset that thought went into, where each move has a purpose (unlike a game where there are 20 moves, 18 of them just for show). It's got counter-moves (another thing I never did enough). There's enough variety in the levels that I never felt bored, unlike with Dynamite Cop, which felt more like a masher to me. And, it's paced properly for a zombie game, where a lot of the time you're slowly taking aim at a zombie so that you can cause maximum damage, then running around, and that leads to a unique feel among beat em ups. Then the icing on the cake is how amazingly corny the cutscenes are.

Yeah, the character models are hideous, even by 1999 standards (the lines aren't clean and polygons are going through each other when the limbs animate), and some of the boss AI is questionable. But the real question is: Do you think, despite the issues it has, that it's good game overall? Maybe in a Data East sense, like "wow this is a bit janky, but once you accept that, it's really fun!"

This is what I was watching.. he points out some tips as he plays. I was skipping around

And what appears to be a pretty decent FAQ:

I always liked it. I learned to love the jank, but got my ass kicked. I thought it was too damn hard so never got anywhere near a 1cc. It had loads of cool little pick ups and weapons, and something about the shooting was really satisfying.

It didn't get reviewed particularly well from what I remember, but it was one of those games I got into a lot. If I had a dreamcast I'd play right now...

Yeah, your character can take an insane amount of damage from one zombie bite. I wonder if I got really good at blocks and counters, to the point where I was more automatic at them, if it'd even out. I remember the reviews when it came out saying it was stiff and you'd get locked into combo animations, but it sounded like they were trying to play it more like a traditional beat em up. That genre had also fallen out of favor a bit at the time, and arcade ports would always score low in general for lack of content. I wonder what the general consensus is now..?
