What is a superplay?

Post by remixSSBM »

Is this something that has specific requirements?

What makes a run a superplay or not?

Is there a specific scoring or lives/bomb requirements?

Does it vary per game?

Is "superplay" an opinion?

Usually it's a run that's really high scoring, but a no miss - no bomb of a hard game could qualify.

fuck me is this the level now? A superplay is a play that is in the region of the best known performance with correlated relativity to theoretical limits typically placing it above 90% of that which is possible for human achievement.

Typically a superplay is a run that optimizes scoring potential and skillful play. This is different than your normal 1ALL or 1CC run, which typically has allowance for some mistakes.

Depending on what you are looking for though, some superplay strategies can be so hyper-specific to the goals of scoring that they can be detrimental to your learning how to 1CC a game reliably - mostly because superplay videos can showcase risky, yet hugely rewarding strategies, or spend ages milking points off of bosses to boost the numbers.

Hey look, someone new to the site is asking a harmless question. Make sure you condescend him/her and chase them away.

Welcome to the forum! If you haven't found this thread yet, here is a list of the highest known scoring replays for many arcade shmups.

Yes.

What makes a run a superplay or not?

Turning a game inside out for all it's worth. Meaning - getting 90-95% of all available points. Counterstops would fit in here too.

Other things - like one person playing both ships in Ikaruga I think would count as well.

Is there a specific scoring or lives/bomb requirements?

Scoring I touched upon above. As for lives and bombs there doesn't have to be, but often games will reward you for both not bombing and not dying at games end.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

If you have to ask if something is a superplay it's probably not a superplay.
