PC to Projector DVD Resolution

Hi there, I have a weird question:

I am wondering if I can easily scale a DVD from 480p to 720p or 1080p when playing from my PC. I have VLC and XBMC (kodi i think it's called now). I'm not familiar with the quality issues one might come across doing this, but I have a reasonable graphics card in there, so I'm thinking maybe it pretty good and it would allow me to forgo a scaler (like a framemeister)

Opinions? Facts?
