Russia World Cup 2018

Post by d3vak »

So yeah, on 2014 we had a nice thread on this topic. Let's continue the tradition, fellows.

What a starting match!

It was a belter for sure. SA were useless, but Russia did well with it.

I'm looking forward to some insane football violence. Not bothered about the football though.

Will Russia be like South Korea in 2002...?

I'll keep a close eye on the referees.

Russia v Saudi Arabia was hilarious. I knew Russia was going to win, but that was a fun match to watch.
The Saudis were mostly useless [surprisingly strong midfield play, really fucking terrible offense that wasted some really good opportunities, relatively lame defense, and an embarrassing keeper that looked like he was caught flatfooted every time the ball came near], although 5-0 was really fucking bad.

two goals in after 90'
the last kick of the game was a goal

Shame about the last decade.

England are good at being boring. Even if they win its hardly entertainment.

If Gareth Southgate can pick some moving players that don't wait in midfield for a lame pass we might actually do well.

I have nothing more to say until the violence starts or the 2nd round comes into play. Since that is where it starts to get interesting.

Supporting Japan. Probably make it to the group of 16 again and shit the mattress. Still, gotta pick some team. Probably wake up early next weekend and check out some games.

I was going to add more snark, but then I remembered they did make the quarters in 06 and 02.

I might be a little obnoxious in this thread.

Italy not being in this tournament is fantastic. I'll be thrilled when France is out.

Also I keep wondering when Belgium will finally get their top result. So much talent. Certainly they are going to smash their group imo.

Can't disagree too much here. A lot of the groups will go as planned. Group D interests me because Iceland is a great story, and I hope they advance. Group H intrigues me in general.

Holy fuck, Egypt vs Uruguay was exciting! I think that Salah would have made a big difference on the match, they were very close, but lacked a skilled striker.

I wasn't expecting anything from Iran v Morocco, so I didn't bother watching it... but Iran won because of Morocco's own goal in stoppage time. Yikes.

You said it. Fucking hell, I went from "We're gonna win this", to "A draw isn't so bad", then to "I guess we'll have to win the other two games" and nearly all the way back to the first one, after Ronaldo made that foul when trying the header, just after scoring that awesome free kick.
Great fucking goal from Nacho as well.

We stopped work for Ronaldo's free kick. GK was at fault honestly. I could see from the camera angle there was way too much room on the right side. But still, you still have to kick and score it, and Ronaldo did that very well.

Lots of slipping in this game. If it keeps raining there will be some embarrassing goals.

For me, at that distance, as long as you can shoot the ball over the defenders and on target, there's a very good chance you'll score. He did it, and it was the most exhilarating moment I've felt watching a football game, since FC Porto's victory against Benfica FC by 1-0, with a goal at the minute 90.

Portugal's second goal was the one where Spain's goalkeeper was most at fault, though I'm not compaining.

Absolutely, considerably better than our team. They are very strong possession-wise, which becomes even more evident when they're winning, since they have no need to rush after the goal, but even when they were not winning, they are still very good.
I honestly didn't think we would win, and was hoping for a draw.

Likewise, though it starts at 11:00 here, so I'll be able to sleep for longer than you.

Fortunately, I'm generally up by 6am anyway so it's not toooo bad. I might end up missing the first 15 minutes or so though. For the most part I like these early start times.

Yeah, I don't mind either, I've waited 2 years for another euro/world cup to start, so I'll enjoy it all. I've watched all the games so far, and will watch all of them again tomorrow and (hopefully) after.
The GMT timezone is pretty good in this regard, especially for european competitions, champions league and europa league included.

Things doesn't look too good for Egypt; I would like to see it advance along with Uruguay, but things look way more favorable for Russia.

Looking forward seeing Argentina in action tomorrow against Iceland.
