A "recommend Nintendo Switch games thread"

Post by DMC »

To get back to gaming I put all my faith in the Nintendo Switch. I plan to buy the console in July.

1. Any good 2D arcade-like game?
2. Anything else you strongly recommend? Any upcoming release to look out for?
3. Is there a high risk of getting unreliably hardware these days? I know there were a lot of issues close to release date.

I am looking forward to the new Camelot Tennis game as I feel committed to Camelot. But other than that I am pretty blank atm.

Volgarr the Viking and probably Wild Guns Reloaded

Bayonetta 1 & 2

Bayonetta 3

Lumines is also coming out next month, that's always a good game to have for a portable (or for any system).

Thanks, I appreciate it!

What's the main appeal of the Bayonetta series?

Fast RMX is a must if you've ever been an F-Zero fan. Nit as good as GX (what is?) but by far the best attempt I've played. Also brutally difficult on hight speeds.

Combat. There's a bunch of different weapons, enemy types, and bosses to learn, master, and get high ranks/scores on. It's basically like Devil May Cry but better.

I can't recommend Breath of the Wild enough. I logged nearly 400 hours into it last year, and that was mostly before the first DLC came out. I plan on running through it again this year on the harder difficulty, and including all DLC. I will echo the Bayonetta 1&2 recommendation, as well as Super Mario Odyssey (duh), though I had some minor frustrations with that game. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe of course, if you didn't play the Wii U version, because it's a fantastic game. For other 2-D games, check out Tiny Barbarian DX, though it's hard as nails, and The Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+ which is a fun Zelda-ish Roguelike game that combines a cutesy chibi look with a grossout horror aesthetic, and has a real addictive quality to it. It's also quite difficult, but for me it had that "one more try" aspect that kept me coming back for more. It's a pick up and play game that can quickly turn into a 2-hour session, if you're not careful. I picked up a new game recently called Penny Punching Princess, which is a 2D game from NIS America, and though I haven't played it yet, it's received good reviews. There's an excellent version of Cave Story+ on the Switch as well that, despite my qualms with the game's somewhat slippery physics, is a fun and rewarding game to play through. For RPG's, there's Disgaea 5 and of course, Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Anyone pick up Celeste? It's gotten great reviews, and is made by the same guys who created Towerfall. It looks like a lot of fun, and I really like the production values. I'm planning on purchasing it, but want to see if it'll eventually release on physical media.

I also find it really interesting that they're still making games in XNA, given that M$ has stopped supporting it. I guess it's a use whatever you are familiar with.

XNA was actually great. MonoGame has been adapting everything implemented by XNA and kept on its legacy. It's a pretty popular framework and a ton of indie games have been using it.

Yeah I'm not knocking XNA's features.... I'm just surprised that current devs are using it today, since you won't get any support from M$ on it.

I'm not too far in yet, but I'm enjoying it so far. I noticed the website also has a more limited chip 8 version that's playable for free. Too bad the online version only has keyboard controls. Controls are much better in the Switch/PC/Xbox1/PS4 version.

Am I gonna be the only one to recommend Splatoon 2? I'm certainly no fan of arena shooters, but short matches plus third-person perspective plus a fun cartoon world and a variety of match modes that rotate regularly (and all the in-game fan art) make for a really amusing game. It helps that the whole turn-into-a-squid mechanic grants you a good deal of movement options.

It's not like you would before either :P
Whenever you see someone today claiming they are using "XNA", they are most likely talking about MonoGame, which is better supported than XNA ever was.

Axiom Verge
SteamWorld Heist

I don't have a Switch, but if I did those would be the first two games I would buy. Two of my favorite games released recently. They're not exclusives though and the only game currently enticing me to get a Switch is Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle.

Switch is also getting the Valkyria Chronicles 1 and Valkyria Chronicles 4. Probably not at the same 60 FPS the PS4 versions has though. They would still be day 1 purchases for me if I had a Switch.
