I am now a day behind on our itinerary because of my kidneys. I thought I was gonna die.

Spent yesterday up the skytree in Tokyo. Was dizzy as fuck. Went to the toilet and felt even more sick when I felt the rocking of the building. There was a high wind alert causing the building to sway.

We did the Ghibli shop near the Skytree, didn't buy anything but took pictures. Then went up the Skytree, ate ice cream and came back down.

The day before that went with my new found friend Mica, she is lovely and guided me through the game shops near her house. Went to a Geo shop, Wonder Goo, Zest and Book off. I didn't find much. I thought I would be amazed by loads of boxed games that were in amazing condition with at least some of them having some sort of desire factor in them. But not really. Loads of RPG's, Sports games etc. Was like CEX or Gamestop in the west. I did find a Rockman X SFC and Darius Twin loose for Y1500 a piece. Picked them top to stop it being a wasted journey. I found a Twinbee Bell but I wanted it boxed. One of the stores had Ninja Warriors but it was Y32000 for cart only.

What is amazing is the amount of tech that talks to you in Japan. The shower has a digital control panel which you can enter the temp of the water in degrees. So I'm pushing it up and all this chitter chatter is coming out of this machine. There is some sort of digital control panel for the toilet as well. I like the bedroom light it has a very dark glow which in the off position which allows you to see the confines of the room and the furniture in it Too dark to read with but very useful for me since if I wake up in the middle of the night for a piss I might trip over my own suitcase. The house I stayed in was dust free, immaculate all round and had keyless entry. You just swipe a card key and enter a number and some electronic lock system opens from the inside. The windows were reinforced as well.

Will try to post pics tomorrow.

See ya.

I highly recommend avoiding earthquakes, in that case.

Seeing price tags like that makes me ever more glad that the Saturn is the oldest console I collect for.

Nice haul, though. If you need help tracking something down I may be able to offer some assistance, but it seems like you're not having any trouble at all.

I am not bargain hunting i am cabinet raiding. Friends was brilliant the lady did all the leg work. I have a4 sheets with the English and Japanese name of the title along with a picture. She went through her inventory folder and that was that. I got bored looking through ps1 2 and saturn because there is millions of games. I am in Kyoto now. I will do another game haul in Osaka in 4 days time. Personally hated super potato and i didnt like retro gaming camp much either. Trader was ok.

I hope to God that you are not just shopping for videogames, Ritchie. There's lots to appreciate.

I am half thinking of going to Japan for some training myself but it would have ot be after the dreaded japanese Summer :)

Why were you feeling ill? Was it the humidity and climate or do you have existing health issues?

Have a good time.

I recall seeing posts here and other game sites some years ago that recommend spending 400 yen a meal at McDonalds as a means to buying more shit. :|

It is Super Gussun Oyoyo, the SFC port with added features which was not developed by Irem (according to the 'net).

I understand. If I were in your position, I'd do the same thing. It's more a sigh of relief that the consoles I care about are still mostly ignored by collectors.

If you want to eat on the cheap, you can certainly do better than McDonald's. I recommend the double portion sets at Matsuya.

My health was showing warning signs months ago where I would wake up dizzy. The internet describes the symptoms as being like a fuzzy cotton wool feeling in your head. My wife eventually bought be a few gallons of coconut water and it sorted it out. She believes the antioxidants in them will help my kidneys. I don't mind pain in my body so much, but when your head starts swimming and your lose your balance a lot thats not nice. I feel much better now, but have been on strict drinking of water for a few days now (apart from the strawberry milkshake).

I have 100's of pics, all will be posted here in some shape or form (none of them will be gaming related, unless you count street shots of Akihabara). Most pics are of Palaces, Castles, Shrines, Cherry Blossom trees, Streets, Cars, Bicycles etc, I went into the Ghibli shop and took pics there and I also took pics of man size Gundam robots in the malls. Most so far are at Kyoto, simply because I was ill in Tokyo. The camera certainly came out in Kyoto. Kyoto is fucking amazing for landscape, scenery and so forth. Haven't seen any electronic shop at all. Would I be wrong if I said that Kyoto doesn't want to be a Tokyo or Osaka? It seems like they have gone to some lengths to keep everything Kyoto'ish.

I didn't spend nearly as much money in Tokyo as I thought I would. So there will be additions. 3 games I bought which were not in the pic were Puzzle bobble 64, Kirby Shards 64 and Super lite Strikers 1945 part 2 PS1. They were relatively cheap at Y3000 for PB64 and Y780 for Kirby. Kirby was bought at store outlet in Saitama. It was over Y3000 in Akihabara. Strikers was Y500. Unfortunately the hunt for these games was not exciting at all. Its alright doing the big box games like SFC and N64. But fuck me, doing PS1 and PS2 is really boring. I got to the point where I was only checking games at chest height because my knees were killing me. In Super potato the aisles are narrow and there were too many people inside. If you were to check the games by your feet at least 5 people a minute would be wanting past you. Thats why I liked "friends" the best. Nobody inside except me, I shoved the list of games in front of Madam Friends and she piled up the list of games in front of me. Boring for some maybe, but unless your 25 or under and have plenty of energy you won't really want to scrummage through 500,000 games.

Going Osaka day after tomorrow (15th April). More game shopping to be done. I might just get Contra and Mystical Quest 3. Its obvious to me that anything Konami and some things Capcom will skyrocket in price from the 16 bit era. Just look at the title list as it stands!!!!

We went on the Shinkansen Bullet train to Kyoto. I filmed the GPS speedo. It got to 182mph. According to my sources, it goes faster towards Hiroshima. Which is a place we will visit towards the end. Wife wants the PC, so I will sign off here for now. Pics are forthcoming.. see you soon.

Sounds like maybe it was hydration? Coconut water has a shit ton of potassium in it. How much coffee/soda vs. water were you drinking?

Going to the Philippines tonight. Got more games on my list and some others not on the list. I found shopping a bit annoying because aftet you bought something you find it cheaper or in better condition elsewhere. Super potato in Osaka has thr best condition and variety of SFC games. They have some minty Rockman X3s in there. Best pick up was Zanac ps1 for Y9800. Thats a steal compared to online prices. My health is ok ish but will check myself out. See you in a bit.

I'm going home tonight. Depending on how much time I get to do some editing I will probably have some videos uploaded on the youtube by Tuesday.

The schedule of videos will be as follows -

Saitama suburb streets, Sky tree and general Tokyo
Kyoto Castles/Shrines
Himeji Castle
Osaka day time / Night time / Umeda building / Nara Park
Hiroshima dome crater / Memorial peace sight
Shenkansen Bullet train / Trains / Riding the Shenkansen.

After the videos are uploaded I might upload pictures. But they will represent almost entirely whats in the videos. I put a lot of time and effort into the filming of these places so I hope you enjoy the footage I shot. I also hope it helps you decide if Japan is for you or not. Obviously these places were visited on a tight itinerary. We would have done more places but unfortunately your legs can only carry you so far in a short space of time.

There is little gaming footage. I decided not to do it for several reasons. A) Its well documented already, B) Some of the places have a policy of no cameras and C) Some of the shops have ridiculously tight corridors that are actually smaller and tighter than youtube videos would have you believe. Besides, most titles are side on with the Japanese text facing towards you. Meaning you can't see the prices and unless you can read Japanese its not a good illustration.

I will document my finds, the prices I spent on them etc. Thats the original reason I put this thread up in the first place.

I will also document the times we got lost, how we recovered and some tips on travelling around Japan. Including the accommodations we stayed in.

If your reading this, please stay tuned, I'm sure there is something here for everyone. Even if just for educational purposes.

Take care.

Richie.

Here are my pickups. Put on Google to save the faffing around.

https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/fold ... 60D5BX9q7R

Nankoku Shōnen Papuwa-kun wasn't a Japan pick as such. It was bought from Nin nin for £42 and it arrived 2 days ago. Ordered on March 30. However, I thought I would add it in the mix since I was going to get it from Japan but since its getting rare and Nin nin said they had it I secured it. I didn't see a copy in Japan.

From the games that don't have prices on them -

Gradius 3 - Y3500
Genjin 2 - Y4500
Batman Returns - Y4500
Rockman X3 had the price on it in the earlier pic - Y12800 I think minus tax (Mandarake have a tax refund counter)
Mystical quest 3 - Y8800
Rockman X cart - Y1500
Go go Ackman - Y4900 minus tax (Mandarake have tax refund counter). BTW, tax is 8%.
Puzzle Bobble - Y1500
Kirby 64 - Y780 (one item I bought from Zest, strangely it was so cheap compared to everywhere else that had it, most shops had it at Y3500)
Zelda OOT - Y3500

Right, so I'll write a bit about the gaming side of it.

I picked up two Goeman 4's. The reason was because this thread taught me to go to book off to get steals. It just so happened I entered Akihabara on the side where you cross the river and book off is right in front of you. I bought one item there, Goeman 4 since it was on my list. I bought it for Y3450 and it was in so so condition (not shown in the pic). When I got into Aki, I saw the one pictured for Y2780 and in much better condition. So the advice caught me out there. This happened 2 or 3 times. I bought Rockman X3 from Mandarake, better examples were found in Osaka. I did learn my lesson towards the end when I saw a so so condition Mystical Quest 3 for Y9800 in the Smaller Super Potato in Osaka. I asked them to ring the bigger store in Osaka (6 or 7 mins walk away) and they said they had "beautiful examples" (I think Japanese use the word beautiful goods to explain in English something is in mint condition). So we walked to the bigger SP store and they had 7 MQ3 Super famicom examples on offer, all were in better condition and one of them was cheaper at Y8800 so I took that one.

Which brings me to the condition scale of these items. A BBC (B cart/disc, B manual, C box) looks perfectly fine to me. I never saw any AAA examples of anything so I wonder if that means untouched by human hands. For me, I'm going to handle my shit and it may from time to time take a knock. So getting AAA items at premium prices is not what I am about. Just opening a SFC game box can put a crease in the lid and I'm a player more than a collector. I also bought games which I fancied the artwork for. All 3 N64 titles boxed wre bought for Artwork alone, but will get played. The shindu Mario 64 cart was bought for the privilege of actually seeing the upgrades of the US version which I never played. I only have the original JP version.

I can also state that the worst examples are always at the front of the shelf. If there are multiples its generally best to dig through the lot to see which has a colourful label (some are discoloured).

Overall I did not find the prices off putting. Mind you I never had a SFC back in the day so the prices I saw in Aki and Osaka were kind of nice compared to eBay.

Before I get on to service, this was my document I printed out -

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XhL ... gZ50U/edit

Using wiki, copy and paste and such, I got the Japanese name of a game from Wikipedia, copied the box cover and took a reference price from Nin nin or "Friends" price list online.

Using the list it was fun in "Friends" because the lady just went through that print out and cross referenced against her records what was in stock. Within 5 minutes a pile was forming on the counter, I literally didn't have to do anything except say Yes or no in Japanese, which was the plan and as Hannibal in the A team used to say "I love it when a plan comes together".

Second place goes to Trader. The guy in there was really helpful.

Mandarake was 3rd. They had the most SFC games in this store, after walking around Japan for 3 days previous you just don't have the energy to look through them. So the guys there gave me a hand using my list. As previously mentioned I got Ack ack man and Rockman X3. The tax refund counter is at the entrace of the store on the ground floor and its only applicable when you spend Y5000 or more.

I wanted to buy some systems, but I wasn't sure about luggage space. It turned out I could of squeezed a system in my baggage. I also felt that almost all examples of SFC consoles were yellowed somewhere on the console. It might not have been all of it, but at least some of it. I want a 2nd N64 for the Hdmi mod, but again thought against it for some reason. Probably because I can usually pick up one locally for the same price.

If like me you went to Tokyo first and Osaka 2nd. I would probably do your shopping in Osaka. I found the quality of goods to be in a better shape overall and the shops spacier to move around. There is also more variety of goods. The worst place is Super potato in Akihabara, the corridors are shit thin, there are far too many people in the house and most of the content is stuff most westerners wouldn't buy. Its also a bit dark and gloomy in there. The shelves are stuffed solid so its hard to pull something out to see what it is, after doing this 15 times and finding sweet FA that I wanted I just gave up and walked out again. As previously mentioned there is a lot of goods at knee level or below, but getting down on the floor to rummage through that with people trying to pass is not a great shopping experience.

Overall, I would seriously like to shop online rather than visiting these shops.

So is Japan retro shopping worth it overall? I would say yes. You get to see the goods in person, using my tips you can easily tell within a minute if they have something in stock or not. You just need to find a store which isn't over crowded and staff are easy to get hold of. Once you got over that its very pleasant. Prices are not steals but you can get some good finds. Zanac X Zanac I got for £65. This is what you can get on ebay -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from ... c&_sacat=0

I might have missed some bits. But this was my retro gaming shopping experience. I didn't enjoy all of it, but I am happy with what I came home with. They are not just games to me now, they are mementos of my first trip to Japan. Woo Hoo!

Sounds like you had some fun times and managed to find a few games along the way.

I was fortunate in that I had mates shop for me in Japan and I did most of my buying in the days that the Yen was much weaker against the Pound. I'd feel a bit weird goign to Japan for shopping though :)
How was the weather for you over all? I have heard many times people say that most Europeans would not be able to survive during the high summer months in Japan and advised me to go during other times of the year.

Glad you had a good time and thanks for updating up homesters :)

Cheers.

Weather was around 16 degrees. We didn't see any rain. Mostly it was sunshine as the pics will show. In fact it was really good weather. Not too hot that you sweat your balls off and not too cold either.

I stayed a few days in Manila on my trip. Japan was an inbetween part of the trip. Manila was 42 degrees the day I left. Its so hot there you can't really do anything productive outside. You either drive around or walk around air conditioned malls. If Japan is like that in the summer, screw that.

Richie, brother, you don't just jump on the first Goemon that smiles at you, you've got to scope the field a bit first. I know you were pressed for time and you couldn't return to Tokyo after Osaka, but at least peruse Akihabara a bit before you take the plunge. I think it was mentioned a few times that Book Off has the best prices overall for cheap stuff, but prices vary, even between stores in the same chain.

Glad to hear you didn't come home empty-handed, though, and I hope the missus had a good time, too.

I'm not blaming anyone. The problem with book off was that unlike the big retro gaming stores it is hit or miss what they actually have in stock. I fell ill in Tokyo and missed a day in bed which knocked our itinerary out of sync. So yeah my stay in Tokyo was hindered with problems, time delays and such. I'm very happy with the goods I brought back and semi happy with what I paid. My friend has a SFC system and I gave him the lesser of the 2 Goeman games as a gift for which he was very excited to receive. So in the end I made the best of it. The book off in Osaka Dendentown had a bunch of crap and then I saw a pretty nice SFC box in white with Taito written on it, pulled it out and it was Puzzle bobble SFC which was on my list. So again its really hit and miss there. At least with the retro stores (with their high prices) you can guarantee that at least 2 or 3 of my wanted games is in stock.
Nice haul! Was the US version of Rolling Thunder 2 part of that?
No it was not. It was from an ebay auction I won whilst in Japan. I used this same pic elsewhere online where the subject matter wasn't necessarily what I picked up in Japan. It is the only auction related item on the pic though.
