David Lynch-gasm: Twin Peaks The Return [SPOILERS GALORE]

Post by GaijinPunch »

I'm checking out Mullholland Drive tonight as I've yet to see it, which I'm mildly embarrassed about. Which would you see for the cinematic experience?

Weird, I'm going to see Mullholland Drive in Sunday with my gf. She's never seen a David Lynch film (ha, she's in for a treat).

Do not read until after you seen the film:
Spoiler
In the original DVD there was a print that had 10 clues for figuring out the mystery of Mullhollannd Drive. It might be worth tracking down, then watching again to see if you're right.
All his films are worth seeing at the cine. His sound design gets lost in a tv. Lost Highway was great from what I remember.

Just started on season 2 of Twin Peaks, getting ready for season 3.

I told mine if she wanted to adopt the Naomi Watts jean shorts no shirt attire for around the house, that I'd be totally okay w/ that.

This I actually found last night while Googling around. Was definitely impressed with the show. I probably missed this one as it was when I was still kinda new to being an expat. Loads of things flew under the radar for me.

Yeah, and more of a mind fuck. I enjoyed it though, when I saw it first run. As for the sound, the cinema last night showed something that was sent w/ the original film, signed by Lynch.

Man, I bet it would be great to see Eraserhead on the big screen. The only day I could make it is a day where i have to wake up at 5:30AM the next morning for work...

I could never watch Eraserhead entirely, this movie makes me feel too uncomfortable.
Mulholland Drive I close my eyes on certain scenes, and Inland Empire is yet another level of crazyness.
Twin peaks season 1 is the love, cant wait for 3.

Happy watching to all of you guys that can make it to the retrospective.

Oh, and last advice, dont take your girlfriend there. Mine keeps on taunting me for loving Mulholland Drive after 5 years, because, you know, the director is bad, we cannot understand what happens in that movie.

Mulholland Drive is the only one I saw in the cinema. I think I prefer Lost Highway.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

Just got back from the screening. I looked at my girlfriend after the lights went up... She said nothing. As we are walking back she gives me her reading of the film -
Spoiler
the last part is real. She killed herself because she hired someone to kill Camilla. The first part is a fantasy where she's a great actress and Camilla loves her.
I thought that was pretty good for a first viewing. Loads of other stuff in the film but that a good basic version of it. It's a real shame Lynch didn't carry on making films. I'm not a huge fan of Inland Empire but that's all we've had since.

I'm off to read some theories.

I've not seen nearly enough of his work, considering his influence on stuff I geek out for like the Japan-made Silent Hill games. I did enjoy Lost Highway and especially Blue Velvet ("Let's FUUUUUUCK!" lol Frank), but it's been years. I'll have to quit fucking around and watch Eraserhead this week.

Yeah. I watched all these films with a friend who's a long-time fan of Lynch. Mulholland Drive was the only one that made me ask him just what was going on after watching it. :?

I was lucky to have seen Mulholland Drive in the theater when it came out, it's weirdly accessible for Lynch. I still have to see Lost Highway, I remember how widely panned it was when it first came out. Goes to show you how full of shit professional critics are.

I can explain just about everything about Mulholland Drive to folks. It's one of my favorite films. I didn't put it all together on my own, there was some digging I did on the web around when it came out that helped me with some of it, but it's really cohesive when you get a few of the central ideas.

Lost Highway never clicked with me, I don't think the imagery is as strong, but I realize there's a lot to dig at with the plot. Inland Empire has incredible cinematography, sound design, characters, but it's pretty much straight surrealism as far as I can tell, it would be like trying to nail down a Dali painting. Mulholland Drive sits really well between those two extremes.

I don't intend to sound like a douchebag, but if I did, fine. You can get into this guy's work if you're fine with not knowing what's going on 100% of the time, and it is a different feeling than 99% of other media, having to parse things as you go. Well, I guess anime does that a lot, but this stuff without nearly as much exposition.

EDIT: Yeah I sound like a douchebag

Lynch films are definitely not for everyone, some of the negative critics I've read smell of people hiding their rejection of the unsettling mindfuckery the films deal with behind textbook cinema criticism. Some people are just hermetic to it, if not genuinely creeped out by everything psychological and even more so when it's spiraling into madness or kinda occult/fantasy stuff.

I can somewhat put myself in their shoes though at a different level, you know like, movies in the vein of a serbian film and martyrs brutally shut my tolerance and understanding system off; I can't be objective about movies like that because I reject them completely. They're crossing the line period, that's more than I can get and well, some have a shorter threshold than I, they stop even at stuff I see as totally harmless.

Anyway what I always liked about the filmmaker is that he doesn't really bother with explaining shit, if there's an audience insensitive to his work he knows it's pointless, so hdgaf!

Fire Walk with Me didn't impress me much. All I remember is that there was a scene with Laura wearing shoes in bed. That shit triggers me like nothing else.

I guess I'm still confused at how a detail like that in a Lynch film of all places, produced by a highly erratic character could trigger anything.

Anyone else excited about Season 3 of Twin Peaks? I just signed up for a 2 week free trial on now.tv in the uk so I should be able to watch the first episode tonight.

Finished season 2 a week ago, Fire a Walk with Me on Friday and I'm half way through Missing Pieces.

Just don't be shit.

Totally horny -- although I can't watch it until tomorrow. :(
We can get Showtime through Amazon (assuming we have Prime) for $8.99 a month. Definitely taking that route.

I know! But Lynch directed and co-wrote all episodes, so it's the best we're gonna get. I know not everyone is for reboots and decades old sequels, but I think this is one that totally deserves another chance, given how it was so ahead of it's time, yet totally mishandled.

Enjoy -- I'm taking a brutal fucking flight home, and want to save this for my TV... so, tomorrow, assuming I can stay awake. Will just stay off the fucking internet until then I think.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I enjoyed every damn second. No way of knowing where the story is going at this point but the important thing is the way it's told. Pure heroin Lynch alright. Obviously there is some weird stuff in there but it's the more conventional scenes that he always manages to add something different to.
Spoiler
Great to see some returning characters - the fucking giant is back! Some crazy shit going on in there - the evolution of the Arm, then the evolution of the Arm's doppelgänger! I could listen the Ben and Jerry talk shit all day. Sad seeing the Log Lady as she was obviously ill when her part was filmed.

The new characters all worked. Mathiew Lillard was great as Bill Hastings. Why did hottie Daria have to die? Looks like the guy from Winkies is doing well for himself in Vegas.

Are the crappy visual effect intentional? Did Lynch do those himself? The body on the bed really stood out. Not sure about that.

I hope the show doesn't get too out there like Inland Empire. Needs to stay grounded, which I think it will.
Going to try and watch episodes 3 & 4 tonight if they're up on now.tv. I'm in.

Glad to hear that. I slept on a fucking plane last night, but I'm giving it the proper TV show treatment... not watching this on my laptop. Thanks for the spoiler tag. :)
Okay... we need a Twin Peaks thread.
There is the one I made ages ago when the series was released on BluRay. Can easily ressurect that, or rename this one. Anyone have any desire either way?

EDIT: Nvm. Necronopticous made one, with an apt title.
