It's great. A real showcase of the Mega Drive's abilities and good fun, with plenty of style. Not particularly challenging though. Expect to pay through the nose for a legit copy.

It is decent - plays a lot like a PC Engine Shmup to me. A bit off the wall in places but not to the extent of Parodius or anything like that.
I prefer the second game. It is possible to 2P action: one on the D pad and one on the guns but not really proper 2P action.
I would play it before you buy it.

Great game, lots of fun and rocking music. But it is very easy. Most people will 1cc it on their first try, but so much fun you'll play it over and over anyway.

If you go the flash cart route, I highly recommend the translation patch, which not only has a straight up translation, but also has an alternate translation in the style of Battle Mania.

Look you snide twit, go reread the OP. The question was about rarity, hence physical ownership.
Take your assumptions about what I do with my games and shove them up your ass, 100%.

For the entirety of my time in this hobby; since the late 70's, packaging has been an integral part of the game experience.
Reading the back-story of the game, reading character descriptions, weapon descriptions, game system mechanics, enjoying the artwork, hints and tips, maps, highscore or password logs, etc., have been and are all part of the enjoyment for me and many others.

The manner in which I select and choose to play my games is based upon what I see in my game cabinet, and not what I see as a digital list in a digital folder- this has been a natural element of selecting games since day one - it is all part of the experience and as it was designed and meant to be enjoyed.

Now this is just semantics, but for me personally I consider Bootlegs, Pirates, and Repros to be three different things

Repros I refer to games which have been altered; such as translated to a language it was not previously available, and then reproduced to look like a commercial product.
Bootlegs and Pirates are almost interchangeable for me, but I typically consider a 1-to-1 copy of a game to be a bootleg.
Pirates I associate with cheap; usually Asian or Russian, reproductions of games which often have basic alterations such as character sprite swaps, or default difficulty changes or default life stock changes.

I have no issue in paying someone for the graphic design and material required to produce an English language version of Battle Mania Daiginjo with English packaging and manual. Or is it more respectable to pay $700 to someone who hordes and flips out-of-market games for profit? As well, for those that get a hard-on for such things, the English language complete package is surely more "RARE!" than the mass produced original.

I think the most salient term here is "counterfeit." Intention to deceive is the key. I'm ok with obvious custom-made stuff, eg NES-styled releases of Famicom exclusives. I'm even ok with subtler productions that could pass for genuine at a glance, provided they have clear and consistent identifying marks to inform would-be purchasers. I believe PCE Memories do this. edit: I could be wrong however, having never personally examined their stuff.

Counterfeiters should imo be exposed, condemned and possibly shot. Deception's a foul thing.

I agree: it is rather silly to invest in games - my god I have met some real fools who think they will be billionaires
If I were to sell my NeoGeo stuff now, I would make a fair amount back but that is not the point I feel. Rather, each game tells its own story and I enjoy playing them.
It is a lot better to invest in something else and, well, for me all the cash involved simply takes the fun out of it.

For Repros: sure, if you know what you are buying. I know that a while back I had a beaten up old Contra III box. The manual and cart were fine but not the box. I found a nicely done repro box to use and it looks nicer so why not? Provided people are informed and not thinking they are buying the original I see no real issue so long as the quality is there and the price is fair.

The work that Battlesmurf and a couple of others did on the RECCA Repro was a good example: translated to English and realised as a standard NES release. It looked quite decent.

We could totally use a thread on how to recognize fake copies of <x>. I've seen tons of people ask about this lately and I don't have great answers.

I don't know anything about it's rarity, or fake copies, but I'm a big fan of the game.
Make sure to turn on the option where you can aim in all directions, for maximum enjoyment.

This fake copy thing is interesting. I was eyeballing my copy, and it looked fine. I was looking at some YouTube vids on how to spot fake copies. I'm down with anything that doesn't involve me opening the cart.
I bought mine a long while back, but I have noticed a lot of cheap retro games, that should be double or triple their prices. Usually from China. I've always assumed they were fake.
