Uh.... honestly, that trailer really makes me want to see the movie, and I don't see anything bad about it. Alright that CGI critter is a little cringeworthy, but I doubt it'll ruin anything.
Sure, it's very Hollywood, but I feel like Star Wars always was that. It doesn't showcase any of the horrible messed up things that define most the really shitty modern Hollywood blockbusters. Maybe it's just that I don't expect much from Star Wars but that's how I like it - I just want a simple enjoyable story, and I think TFA delivered really well on that front, and so far it seems like TLJ could easily continue in that vein. As long as it's not a horrible mess like Rogue One, it's alright with me.

That second one is better, I like the police costumes. They've got a Buck Rogers late 70's vibe.
But still, you would think the work would be a bit better.
Still not too interested in this, I wish I was. I got all excited for TFA. How can I make myself want it?

Get electro shock treatment to erase all memories you have of the original films and every film with special effects in it that's come since, then make this the first film you see in your new tabula rasa state.dan76 wrote:Still not too interested in this, I wish I was. Sometimes things just get old - it has been 40 years. No reason to feel guilty that a kid's movie from the 70's would be less relevant to an adult in the 10's.

My love for the original films will never die. I watch them once or twice a year and still see new things in them. It's just I don't have much of a connection with these new films. I guess the thing with TFA was that Harrison Ford was back and over the years he seemed to be very dismissive of it.BryanM wrote: Sometimes things just get old - it has been 40 years. Don't care about Finn or Rey or who her parents are. I don't want another walker fight or training sequence. Can't it do anything new? Maybe it will, that's the hope. That's what the original films did, they gave you something new with each episode (ok, Jedi did have a second Death Star). The trailers don't give that impression.
Still, it would be great to hear some early impressions saying it's a masterpiece. If it's Blade Runner 2049 good then I'll be happy.
@Skykid. Is he? There's not much in it with directors these days. It's a shame Nolan wouldn't do one.
Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VIII) released 12/15/2
I like both Finn's and Rey's characters. They are simple and likeable, despite Rey's horrible Mary Sue tendencies.
Rewatched TFA a couple of weeks ago, and was almost surprised by how much I actually liked it. It's a wholly solid movie unlike most of the things Hollywood have been able to produce over the last ten years.

Well, at least people won't be able to say this one was just a clone of Empire.
Though I wouldn't have minded if it were.
A bit cringeworthy at times with its forced attempts at progressing the story and hamfisted exposition, but it was very entertaining and genuinely exciting. I think I'll give it a pass.

I got an invite to a midnight showing so went along. It was a weird film. Thinking back there were lots of good bits, however, when I was watching it I kept thinking that I'm going to have to sit through this again with the gf.
Reading reviews today I'd agree with the general consensus. It is certainly too long, and some stuff could've easily been cut to make a better film.

So it's another Star Wars film that doesn't suck balls. It's no where near the greatness of Empire, but what is?

Whilst the mission that Finn and Rose go on brings larger elements into the film ( including Benicio as DJ, who is really good) the plot that leads them on this mission is rubbish. That whole section could go, because the whole thing serves no point in the end anyhow. It seems as if at the script stage there were too many characters that needed stuff to do. So Finn and Rose are a bit of a waste, as is Poe.
Edit: oh yeah, as is Phasma!
The whole time lock sequence of the first order catching up to the rebels was naff, a bit Star Trek.
Carrie Fisher is really good - apart from that awful floating through space, hardly her fault.
All the Rey, Luke, Kylo and Snoke stuff is great. The end of the film with Luke... I don't know. I can see why Mark Hamil was a bit iffy about the script. I wish Chewy had more screen time.
However, it doesn't leave me with much hope for episode 9. Please don't have a load of kid Jedi's. One was bad enough with TPM, don't go there again. Please!

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VIII) released 12/15/2
Yeah... it had a lot of scenes that felt really superflous. And by that I don't mean that they helped with world or character building or anything either, quite the contrary - I don't mind the length of the movie, but it could have been used to better develop the stories (especially Rei's interaction with Luke was very lacking, but we had to see him milk alien tits for no reason) and maybe help lead the action forward in a more natural fashion (Finn's and Rose's side mission as you pointed out, being an obvious example - I like that part, and the change of scenery, but it didn't fit naturally into the plot).dan76 wrote: Reading reviews today I'd agree with the general consensus. Another piece of criticism I could dig up would be that it really doesn't feel like Star Wars. I mean, it has strong elements of it, but on the other hand there isn't anything left of the romantic space adventure that defined the original trilogy (or at least the first two movies). It's much more dramatic. I think it's ok though, as it's a really good Hollywood action move on it's own. It would have been strong even if it hadn't been a Star Wars movie.
EDIT: Oh yeah!

Doll Yoda that didn't look like a video game. Great way to send him off, following all the horrible crap the prequels did to him. He was a bit shoehorned in there (one of the surprisingly few nostalgia callbacks actually in the movie), but it kind of did fit into the story

@sumez, I agree with everything you say. The script is where the problems are. The performances are all good, it's well shot, everything works, I just wish we'd have spent time doing different things with some of the characters.
But let's be honest, compared to the prequels it's a masterpiece.

and the tit milk. Wasn't that done to make him seem a bit like Yoda. In Empire Yoda is a bit ferrel.
More importantly why did Luke have to die at the end. I thought it was dumb. Are we just getting force ghost Luke from now on? The fake Luke was brilliant though.
Great to see Yoda, it's a puppet thank Christ, but still a bit off.

Kylo. He doesn't shoot Leia, his wingmen do. Why? Is he aware that Snoke is manipulating him all along, because it doesn't seem so in the performance, but that would make sense in him getting rid of Snoke. Does he do it because Snoke will sense this weakness, and he thinks the only way to kill him would be with Rey. Am I overthinking this damn thing?
Or, is getting rid of Snoke something that just comes to him in that moment? When he asks Rey to join him and let everything go I thought he was being genuine. But Rey saw through it. He wasn't. How long was he like that?!? BTW, I think that whole scene is one of the best in all the films. Brilliantly done.
Other stuff. I really liked DJ and his way of living in that world. I'd watch a spinoff movie with that character. At the time I thought he was underused, but thinking about it, his brief appearance adds the the scale of the film, these interesting characters dropping in. Same with Laura Dern. The acting was great.

Yeah, him dying at the end kind of diminished the whole fake Luke thing. On the other hand it made more sense than him just showing up out of nothing. I think it was a nice send-off for him though, passing the baton to Rei - he's not needed for the next episode.

is one of the strongest and best written characters in the new series. Sure, the Star Wars movies have traditionally been about a very black and white approach to the good/evil thing, but by giving him more relatable emotions, I think it also helps making the entire concept of the "dark side" much more believable.
He's the proud, angsty teenager who wants to prove himself. The first movie saw him longing to be the new Vader, but in this one he realised how much Snoke has been manipulating him. As far as I remember, the scene where he decides not to shoot Leia comes after the scene where he's humiliated by Snoke, right after pointing out that he murdered his father. The only purpose of doing that was proving his dedication to the dark side, and it's obvious that he regrets his actions - it's no surprise that he would have second thoughts about killing his own mother.
So his "arc" in this movie is about him escaping Snoke's grip and becoming his own character instead of a wannabe Darth Vader - he doesn't have to be the one-dimensional evil villain - obviously he feels betrayed by Snoke, and likes Rei whom he has a lot of respect for. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't keep his hatred towards Luke Skywalker and the rebellion - it would be naive to expect him to do a face-heel turn just because he killed Snoke.

I've been reading more reviews. Seems like a lot of critics like it but Star Wars fans don't. I guess this in part explains why the prequels have their fans. They're bad movies but there's a lot of "canon" stuff in there to enjoy. Maybe fans wanted a remake of Empire after all.

superman Leia. How awful was that? How could they do it. My mate wanted to walk out at that point. I think the scene wasn't a good idea in the first place, but the way if was done is SO BAD.
But to counter that I just remembered the scene where R2 shows Luke the original message from Leia. That was great because it served a purpose and wasn't there just for nostalgia.

it dawned on me just how hard they try to set up Leia as the next big thing, implying that her potential with the force is even stronger than Luke's. It's not just hinted at, it's straight up telling us "if there's ever an episode 7, it's Leia's time to shine". Of course, that kind of also assumed that it wouldn't have been another 32 years.
So I was a little disappointed to see how she took a backseat in TFA. Not surprised of course, Carrie Fisher at that point couldn't have carried that role, so I think they made the right choice, but it's kind of a big hole in the continuity between the films. So I think it made sense to reveal that she had in fact been nurturing her abilities with the force, but keeping it undercover. With that perspective I think it was a strong element to her character.
But apart from that, yeah, the way they pulled it off was by far the most off-putting scene in the movie. They had no reason to showcase it in such a ridiculous way. I think "Superman Leia" was actually the exact same words I used.
And it's too bad, because Carrie Fisher actually did a really good job in the movie aside from that. I was surprised how big her role was this time around, and she pulled it off. I wonder how they are going to handle that for the next movie, now that we have lost her. I don't think anyone expected Leia to survive this movie.

I was wondering why Red Letter Media weren't coming around with a (serious) review of The Last Jedi, and found out that apprently the movie doesn't premiere in most parts of USA until today!?! I guess that also explains the strange lack of discussions and memes and spoilers and whatever about it all around geeky areas of the internet.
Really strange - why did we get it three days earlier? I guess it's fair, considering we had to wait half a fucking year for Phantom Menace.

Carrie Fisher was excellent in this. It's surprising as I think she's pretty awful in TFA, so I guess it was a bit of a risk giving her such a large part of the film, but it worked.
The fact that she died a year ago during the edit I'm surprised they didn't cut Luke's death. Going into 9 we don't gave any OT characters (unless Lando makes an appearance) Some may think it's a good thing, but I'd have preferred another film with Luke. They could've easily cut those last couple of shots of him.
His death wasn't every well handled. It took me a second to realise what had happened. He looks to the sun, then there are two suns like that shot on tattooine, then a wide shot and his cloak flys off the cliff(?). I check when I see it again, but after such a big reveal and all that had gone on in the scene previously it was a lot to take in.
For 9 I think what they will do is set it a few years later - hopefully when those disney kids at the end have grown up a bit. TLJ ends with all of the rebels on the Falcon. Hardly a threat in itself, so it's got to go forward a few years, with Leia having died between films. Maybe it starts with her funeral?
