Oh, Luke
Spoiler
will be back as a force ghost for the next one... don't doubt it for a second
I agree that it would be best to have the next movie
Spoiler
start a few years later. Providing it doesn't add in some kind of implied build-up of a new resistance force in the mean time, which would defeat the whole purpose of the TLJ ending (we are severely crippled, there are just a few of us left, but we have a ray of hope in the people spread throughout the galaxy who are being opressed, and still willing to fight).

I kind of would have wished they did the same thing for this movie too. Starting out the Luke/Rei storyline exactly where they cut it in the previous movie (and with a pointless joke on its expense, too) was cheesy as hell. It would definitely have improved the characterization of their relationship if they'd had the time to get to know eachother in the meantime. Instead, everything felt rushed.
Man, I'm really bad at pretending I don't care about Star Wars.

It's ok to care, I suppose. For me nothing will touch the original unaltered trilogy. Everything else is a bonus.

The more I think about the film and the more hate I'm reading for it from die hard fans
Spoiler
makes me think that maybe a lot of the choices made were a bit pants. Were we really watching Luke, because apart from being played by Mark Hamill there is absolutely nothing of the OT Luke in his character.

It would be a tough character to write for anyone, but going off and hiding away after fucking up so bad isn't really what Luke would do is it?

I don't know. There's loads of crap in this but there's also lots of good stuff. It really uneven, the pacing is way off. For instance as Luke confronts Kylo on Crait we cut to the Poe and the rest trying to figure out a way out of the cave. Like, at that moment who gives a fuck. Get back to this epic battle between Luke and Kylo!

The slow chase in space is really bad. Just send a load of Ties ahead to destroy the ship. Or hyper jump I front of the Resistance!

Ackbar dies off screen! Why did we have Laura Dern character at all? Her role could've been filled with Ackbar. Imagine Poe going up against Ackbar!
Blah blah blah, got to stop thinking about this stuff and get back to living! No one else seen this yet?

Really want to see TLJ in cinema maybe one or two weeks later, so keep use the spoiler tag.

I guess that also explains the strange lack of discussions and memes and spoilers and whatever about it all around geeky areas of the internet.

Really strange - why did we get it three days earlier? I guess it's fair, considering we had to wait half a fucking year for Phantom Menace.
Actually, Star Wars: The Last Jedi made it's grand debut on Thursday night, December 14th, 2017 as a "sneak peek" for North America. It made it's grand premire in London on Tuesday night, December. 12th, 2017 with all the major actors/actresses + head honchos of Lucasfilm & Disney (minus Carrie Fisher, of course) attending the extravagant SW gala.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 501st Legion makes a special guest appearance in George Lucas' hometown of Modesto, CA for the SW:TLJ film premiere this weekend -- we'll see. They usually do show up for such SW film debuts anyways.

For Sumez,

Did you see SW:TLJ in 3D format or in traditional 2D format?

3D, only two showings at that cinema last Wednesday, and both were 3D. Otherwise I'd have gone 2D.
The 3D was inoffensive, but as usual - pointless.

Finally checked out Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 3D on a DFX screen setup with Dolby Atmos surround sound upgrade. It clocks in at a whopping 2 hours and 32 minutes in duration (so yeah, make sure to use the loo before watching TLJ). Am not sure what the production budget Disney spent on it is as imdb.com doesn't mention/list it at this point in time. I can easily see some elemental scene recycling that harkens back to the original SW trilogy of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi in this newfangled SW Episode VIII movie -- the hard-core SW purists will spot 'em quite easily.

As usual, we get a new alien creature to adore by the name of porgs (which are estimated to be about five to seven inches tall -- baby porgs are even smaller). In one particular scene, Chewy is just about to eat when he's interrupted by a few porgs watching him eat. A few cool and over-the-top space battles with the First Order armada against the rag-tag Resistance fleet (or what's left of it) with Lucasfilm's Industrial Light & Magic department handling the CG EFX for those particular scenes.

This spoiler relates to a certain scene towards the end of the film -- read on as to which one it's discussing about:
Spoiler
There is one jarring omitted scene that begs of the question of "how did Rey get back on the Millennium Falcon after her stint with Kylo Ren on-board Snoke's flagship?" That answer/scene isn't shown to the audience (thus making the audience wonder how the heck did she appear in it). WTF? I'll have to say it's a film scene that was possibly accidentally axed, thus leading to a major film continuity blunder issue/gaffe on the film director himself. So be it.
According to imdb.com, Rian Johnson's original cut of the TLJ film exceeded three hours. Reports say he cut between 45 and 60 minutes to get the film down to a more palatable run time. Should be interesting to see/watch the deleted scenes of TLJ when it's finally available on digital demand/DVD/Blu-Ray formats sometime in possibly April of 2018. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney releases a 3D Blu-Ray disc set of TLJ in the nearby future as well (Disney has released 3D Blu-Ray versions of TFA & Rogue One in the past).

Saw the new teaser poster of the new upcoming "Solo: A Star Wars Story" spin-off movie slated for a May 25, 2018 theatrical release today (should make for an interesting side story of the earlier adventures of Han Solo & Co. taking place before Star Wars Ep. 4 A New Hope).

I haven't read everything that dan76 and sumez have said but I largely agree with the first few posts regarding what's good and what's bad. This could have easily been an 8, and perhaps better than Return of the Jedi. Shit, I am expecting a fan edit in 1 year that will make it leaps and bounds better. But, again, it didn't suck balls. Unfortunately we live in a time that that means something.

EDIT: I really can't add anything else. You guys have summed it up pretty perfectly. But perhaps...
Spoiler
Tons of cringe worthy bullshit, tons of really good. Weird balance (it's like they put every single thing they filmed in there), and definitely pacing issues.

I guess one good thing is they did some stuff that I generally did not expect:
- Not really feel like a second act... at least not like Empire did.
- Ditch snokes
- Not kill Leia (was sure of this)
- Kill Luke (was sure of this b/c of above)
- Not rehash Empire's Jedi training.

Still some unexpected turds as well.

If I had to give a review score, it might be negative.
A pile of appalling misunderstandings of the sort of things that should and shouldn't happen, and for what reasons, in Star Wars, combined with silly loose ends (e.g. who is the man Finn is supposed to recruit?) and huge plot holes within plot holes.
Carelessly written, by someone who doesn't really care and feel for the story. There was an obvious end state to reach, and required steps to reach it, with more respect for standard devices than for what good characters would have done. The throwing away and wasting of much that had been set up in The Force Awakens, including important characters, is rather ugly, but the attitude towards war and heroism is the worst aspect, with people dying for no good reason.
Typical bad writing example: when Leia and Luke talk at last, they don't have anything important to say; the scene is evidently a "needed" item on the fanservice checklist, and it soon becomes obvious that Luke had more urgent business to attend to instead of wasting time to talk and SPOILER while SPOILER.
I liked the cast, despite the many "challenging" characters (for example, Rey as a naive brute).

I feel like most of that post is describing Rogue One.

Of course, The Last Jedi did have some of the same problems at that movie, but it's in no way anywhere near as bad.

For the first time ever, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on 4K UHD format: https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Last-J ... +star+wars No release date has been announced when it'll be available to buy (it's a given to be sometime in 2018 -- that is certain).

Am not sure if Disney & Lucasfilm will release the other seven SW films in 4K UHD format as well. So all those theories of Snoke's true identity & background history went out the window as portrayed in TLJ. According to Lucasfilm, Snoke wasn't of human origin.

Please remember no spoilers in this thread, appreciate your tact so far guys. I'm interested to see your responses, but I'd rather not have any spoilers going off so use the tags for now!

So far it sounds pretty bad, which is a shame - I had some hopes for this one based on the director - but I'll see what's what when it arrives here early next month.

It's actually very good. Best action move I've seen in years, with a solid dramatic drive that actually had me engaged.
Anything beyond that is just nitpicking because Star Wars.

Seriously a good movie. Sure it has a couple of pacing problems and a couple of captain obvious moments, but it worked. Dramatic and thank goodness Kylo Ren was more fleshed out this time around rather than destroying everything when he got mad.

Spoiler free:

My guess is you will be perplexed. The only thing I'm familiar with from Rian Johnson is his 3 Breaking Bad episodes (superb), and Looper. Looper I thought had issues, but it was far from bad. Definitely glad I saw it once. For this, I was pretty surprised by some of the bad turns in the writing. But as stated, there's plenty of good, too. But all of it mixed together makes it a bit of a mess. Maybe we can stick him in the "can direct but can't write to save his life" category.

My other irk: I'm all for a nice long, well paced film but potentially having to take my son, who has attention issues, to see this will be difficult. He paid attention to TFA so maybe there's hope.

Hopefully you can go in with a somewhat clean slate and be objective but that's arguably hard after day 2. :)

So, Johnson gets his own trilogy, and Star Trek fans have Tarrantino to look forward to.

To be clear, Rian Johnson is far from a great director and hasn't made anything great to-date. But he's a more creative director, evident with his low budget debut, Brick, which while quite imperfect (pacing problems, tonal problems etc) it's a well written and directed movie.

Looper has issues as long as my arm. Plot holes agogo and some awful writing; but again, it's fairly creative and well put together. I can only say that my optimism was roused by firsthand reports of him performing as a genuine director should on set: with passion and energy, and not laid back hack.

But I haven't seen the movie so I'm not sure how that translated.

Reluctantly saw this the other night, as chaperone for next door's kid. He's small and cute and his mom's a nice lady who (very understandably!) didn't want him leaving the late show a naive boy and trekking through the city centre alone, only to return home a smack addicted career burglar with several illegitimate children, so you know.

I enjoyed it, tbh. The usual #woke #killallwhitepeople #jewsdid911 suspects in the media have concocted an absolute shit cauldron around this thing, so I was expecting my eyes to spend most of the show in the back of their sockets... but AZN Lena Dunham aside, I didn't notice much out of line with the spirit of the classic trilogy.

As a casual follower of the series at absolute best, I can understand why diehard fans of the OT would despise a few things here - particularly concerning Luke.
Spoiler
A fallen hero haunted by regret is one thing - turning into a moping pussy in need of a hard slap if not an outright beating is quite the other. Hamill absolutely sold every line and grimace, bless him, and his eventual return to the field was entirely convincing, but yeah... in series context, I can't buy the whole self-indulgent recluse act. I'm a self-indulgent recluse and believe me, OT Luke never had the toxic minerals to head down this shitty road.

This is TLJ's version of TFA's Starkiller base. We need to flip the board so it's beleaguered rebels VS evil empire again! Oh look - a super deathstar, that'll do. Now we need Luke to be a moping feral pussy ala Yoda, ah, he made a terrible mistake and abandoned his friends and family to whatever lay in store for them - that'll do. Cough. But I did love Hamill's performance. I thought Space Adam Lanza did really well too (now that is a damage case), and although she's a blunt instrument, Daisy Ridley was inoffensive opposite them. Which she was most of the film so okay.
Ignoring the original films, there's also the ongoing
Spoiler
chain of command fuckery with the Resistance. Poe/Finn/Rose's plan got a hell of a lot their comrades needlessly killed, which is bad, but almost forgivable with Admiral DangerHair at the top of the chain. Maybe I need to rewatch but I could swear she could've just kept them clued in? Or at least not so aggressively given the impression she didn't know WTF she was doing? Worse, there's no apparent personal blowback from the aforementioned catastrophe... ehhh, I'll let that go given how dire things were from then until to the end, I guess. I can only take this Warfare Lite stuff so seriously. Laura Dern was superb in her last moments, and that was some shmuppin as fuck space destruction. Authentic Gradius Endingsplosion.
Loved the brutal opening space battle.
Spoiler
When the Resistance bombers started going up in flames I thought "fucking hell that's a bit indulgent" and was glad to see it recognised as such by Leia. I hate it when legions of soldiers are getting mowed down and everyone's all hunky-dory, who cares, Main Characters are okay~.
I didn't mind
Spoiler
Snoke's starkly unceremonious end. He's an evil megalomaniac cunt, now he's dead, great. Shit happens! If anything I wish they'd not telegraphed it so obviously with the sabre moving just before.
Overall, pleasantly not horrified. Better than TFA if only for a much lesser sense of repeating past glories. If you are hardcore you may be justifiably annoyed at Luke's handling. Casuals may well forgive on account of Hamill's excellent old gunslinger performance.

Just back from a showing and thoroughly enjoyed it. Quite the ride in all.

Nitpicks:
Spoiler
* Unceremoniously killing off Admiral Ackbar
* Leia's sudden Jedi ability to survive a massive explosion and vacuum. Honestly thought this would be a great end for her and further develop Kylo Ren. Wasn't much to the character after that.
* Luke milking an unnecessary alien cow. Could we see Rey escaping back to Chewie instead? That was a weird thing to have cut back to a quick mention yet we get an awkward pan down to some fat udders and the accompanying milking.
* Not enough background for Snoke. He was mysterious in Force Awakens, and fucks up Hux and Kylo Ren at the start of this one. I like the manner of his demise ("your overconfidence is your weakness") but his appearance is ultimately as disappointing as ever Marvel film villain.
* Casino horse race escape sequence was unnecessary padding.
* Can we please have Captain Phasma be as awesome as she looks?!

Yep, what a waste. I can only think that
Spoiler
the whole Canto Bight stuff
was what got cut from the 3 hour version. If a part of a movie is shit sometimes cutting that part down makes it more shit because with each cut you are reducing the reason for it's being there in the first place.

I keep thinking about the film and almost everyone I talk to has the same opinion of it. I really think the script wasn't ready. That seems to be the major downfall of these films. Having re watched the OT over the last few days, regardless of your opinion of them they're pretty well plotted. Everything makes sense and slots together, especially Star Wars. In Jedi maybe we don't love the Ewoks so much but they play their part and are integral to the story and themes.

Rogue One's story was a mess, why on earth did they set it up the way they did - and, why have that bit with the lead that has to be connected so they can get a signal to open the thing to upload the thing.. Fuck off. All over the place, and it's the same with this. Too many characters to take care of, a big part of the story that goes nowhere. These are basic mistakes in any film.

It's also bought out the differences in the type of fan Star Wars has. "Canon" fans are well butt hurt, and that explains the difference between them and the critics.

I enjoy the extreme melodrama as much as any external observer should, but it's always joined with this streak of sadness. A memory to somewhat articulate what I'm trying to say:

When watching the prequels a long time ago in a city far far away: The scene where R2-D2 shows up to mend a crack on the hull or propulsion system or some other shit, then the beeping trashcan gets a couple more seconds of screentime when Princess Natalie Portman tells him he did a good job. A couple guys in the audience cheer half heartedly, then quickly go quiet.

That feeling.
I really think the script wasn't ready.
I think the fundamental premise they built the current movies on is just wrong. You can't serve three masters. You can't check all of the checkboxes without being hollow and cynical.

It could have been a new story with new characters, or a new story with old characters, or the Zelda thing where you retell the same legend in a very different way. If you're going to go past the ending, I'm personally more interested in a story about Luke doing grown up things like herding nerfs, and he gets drawn back into the hero business to solve a crisis much smaller in scope.

But that isn't the kind of thing that maximizes revenue.

Come on, you can't have a new movie with new drama without destroying some of the resolve of the old movies. ROTJ ended on a happy note, but we can't have an episode 8 where Luke is just frolicking around enjoying what a hero he is.

Concurring with dan76 - the further I get from my viewing and Mark Hamill's superb performance, the more damningly poor Luke's writing seems. Hamill really did grit his teeth and work with the shit hand he'd been dealt.
Spoiler
"I almost murdered my nephew in his sleep, fearing he would become the new Vader if I didn't. I remain horrified and ashamed of myself, and of what ensued from my cowardice."

This is good! Compelling, even. Strong, dark soil to sully the image of Luke as gooder-than-good superman. He succumbed to an evil impulse, righted himself before he could act on it, but was powerless to avert the deadly consequence of his faltering. Shit happens! Character intact!

But then...

"SO BEN WENT MURDEROUSLY APESHIT AT MY BETRAYAL AND VANISHED, AND I FIGURED THE THING TO DO, NOW THAT PRECISELY WHAT I FEARED THE MOST WAS COMING TO PASS, WAS RETIRE TO GOATFUCK ISLAND. LIFE IS SOME BULLSHIT LMAO."

And this is where they screwed the pooch. This isn't humanising frailty; this is total dereliction of duty in favour of nihilistic self-consolation. Now Luke's not a sullied hero - he's a shitty brother, a shitty uncle, and a shitty friend. Character assassinated. Sacrificing himself is less a return to virtue, more the only way he could possibly atone for his abject negligence. There's no nuance here; he sparked a catastrophe, then walked away. What an absolute cunt!
I ain't even a fan and I feel bad for 'em. Image Even as a casual observer, though, that article reminded me of the film's better aspects - and there's no reason all of that couldn't have worked without the above overshoot. Instead, I have to actively forget about the space popcorn saga's earlier films to enjoy the newer ones, and vice-versa.

...I actually do the latter by default with any ongoing series, because sooner or later they fuck something up, if not outright turn to shit. :[

Oh wellz. EDIT: Half In The Bag review is up. Image

Spoiler
At the premiere, Hamill went in looking optimistic and peppy. When he came out, sitting by the director, he was making that unusual facial expression of a destroyed man. The speculation is:

* He looks really hurt, almost has tears in his eyes, and he's angry. Maybe he didn't know what they did to Luke in post, the internet theorist suggests.

* He's just sad from seeing his dead friend Carrie up on the screen.

* Drugs, maybe?

* He's just a weirdo.
