Did Icycalm die
Did Icycalm die
Hello all. I have been interested in icycalm for many years, not as a fan but interested in how crazy he is. I searched on google and found he posted over 1000 times here and was considered quite the character. According to some of his "friends" he died 4 months ago street racing in Sweden. In addition he hasn't posted on his website or logged into steam for over 4 months. It might be some time of scam or publicity stunt, so I was wondering if you good folks could tell me whether this would be in character for him and how likely it is?
"R.I.P. Icycalm
Just figured I should let everyone know that the most active poster on the LTC Steam Forums was killed in a car accident, the same car that Imba) was killed in back in the WGDF days.
Since he's dead, and my site was literally a copy of his, it means I can't bring back the site now, since I have no content to plagiarize. Even from the grave, he finds a way to one-up me! *shakes fist*"
also:
" Icycalm is dead
he died in an illegal street race in sweden last week
it's all pretty hush hush right now but I and other members of the CULT are working on a way to recover all of his unpublished files and thinking how to best preserve and continue his legacy
you should read his world warriors, samurai spirits, gekka no kenshi, and power stone reviews. truly the best writing on fighting games ever.
will be sure to post them once we figure out how and when to present them."

Icy was before my time, but if I understand correctly you can subscribe to his site and try to post on the forums. If he doesn't ban you it means he's dead.

Re: Did Icycalm die
He updated his domain registration for orgyofthewill a month ago: https://who.is/whois/orgyofthewill.net
But not for culture.vg: https://who.is/whois/culture.vg and https://who.is/whois/insomnia.ac
So, whosoever site is a carbon copy, here is your chance to get the real thing!
He is most certainly not dead or in jail, otherwise the orgy registration update wouldn't have happened. He probably just lost his interest in gaming, at least for now.
Also, a quick look at his sites shows that he stopped posting there somewhere in August. Yeah, he just lost interest.

Wasn't he busy using the power of Nietzsche to make the best game objectively possible?

No doubt about it. This 'King of Gods' must be saying his prayers now.
Re: Did Icycalm die
It does speak to his brash tendencies that anyone could believe for even a moment that he died with such bravado, but I kind of doubt it. It does almost feel like a publicity stunt in that it's something just barely believable enough that it may have happened, but then again it could easily be people who are not associated with his inner circle spreading rumors.
If the detective work above is any indication, his ego has probably had its fill, is all. Give him time to digest and he'll be back.

This is the first time OPs text appeared on the internet: https://boards.fireden.net/vg/thread/11 ... #116317262
Note the date, it was the 16. September, two months before he made that orgy update.

Icycalm can't die, Icycalm is the internet.

Social engineering. He's probably trying to troll us into believing he's dead, only to resurface later and proclaim his Ubermensch status, and how he was able to fool us.
As long as he's quiet and inactive, couldn't care anymore.

During some time after Michael Jackson's death, I actually believed he made it up, just to reappear by surprise somewhere and rejoice all his fans around the world. That would have been awesome. Poor fellow is dead though, shame.
Icycalm can not even compete. If poor fellow is dead, though, shame.

Icycalm became one with Webdriver Torso
Re: Did Icycalm die
The only things I remember of Icyclam, was something about his banning people who said they didn't play shmups (or games in general) for score, and some folks poking fun at some of the artwork done for a game he was supposed to be making. Other than that, I don't really recall anything about the guy.
Re: Did Icycalm die
Icycalm can't die. At least not before he releases his AAA übermensch game that will blow away the industry and show us how he is indeed the one and only true video game philosopher and theorist in this world. Afterwards, his mission on Earth will be completed and he could join Nietzsche and Baudrillard for all I care.

Re: Did Icycalm die
The OP is probably Icycalm as he repeatedly posted stuff about himself here, whoring for attention under different account names and it has been quiet on the loony front after he planned to write "the best game ever".
Re: Did Icycalm die
I wouldn't be surprised if Zirbas spread those rumors himself. It'd be amusing if he finally realized he'll never be able to deliver his ubergame and proceeded to kill off Icycalm and disappear from the Internet instead of admiting defeat.

If he could keep his mouth shut and pull that off he would have transcended into something that wasn't Icycalm... bringing us full circle to the question at hand.Ruldra wrote:I wouldn't be surprised if Zirbas spread those rumors himself. Damn, my new year's opening post has been stolen. I do hope he's still alive but he hasn't posted on his forums since the August, apparently. Is he dead or only simulating death?
It's possible that he's got it on auto-update...Teufel_in_Blau wrote:He is most certainly not dead or in jail, otherwise the orgy registration update wouldn't have happened
This might be the only invariance here. But it gets better than that: He requires a paypal payment for registration (and required it once per year) and used to manually verify the registrant. If he's dead, eventually the forums will ban everyone from accessing them. A fitting ending to an epic journey if I may say so.CStarFlare wrote:If he doesn't ban you it means he's dead.
Spoiler
Dibs on insomnia.ac if icycalm really is dead though.
<RegalSin> It does not matter, which programming language you use, you will be up your neck in math.
Re: Did Icycalm die
Well, it's official. RIP icycalm.~$ whois insomnia.ac
Domain : insomnia.ac
Status : Expired/Grace
Expiry : 2016-02-01
That's pretty depressing, he's more likely dead than it being a scam. He put far too much work into his site just to let that domain expire.

Re: Did Icycalm die
So...did he genuinely got himself killed in a fucking street race out of all things? You'd think a man in his forties would know better than to play Fast & Furious in public roads.
I have zero sympathy for him if that's the case.

Absolutely could've gotten arrested, considering he's been on the run for fraud for like 10 years now.

Icy is a master snowboarder, though - not the sort to ever be cornered easily. He'd be sailing over those pigs' heads to freedom before they could say "sweet moves!"

Kinda sad when you consider he was on his way to become an aerospace engineer. He threw it all away with those scams and then lost his mind to philosophy.trap15 wrote:Absolutely could've gotten arrested, considering he's been on the run for fraud for like 10 years now.
PS: I looked up an old post of his to confirm his degree, and came across this gem:
Almost surreal to think he said that at some point. What you should do in a discussion is attack ideas, not the people who are proposing them.
Re: Did Icycalm die
He represented the nadir of niche Western gaming culture, in thrall to the now largely defunct Japanese arcade scene.
The bottom line is, many of the top shooters, systems and companies weren't even featured on his rather newbish (and reeking of Asbergers) site.
Ultimately the person behind the persona turned out to be really quite casual.

Re: Did Icycalm die
On that subject, game theory blogs that preach philosophy and superior design are pretentious and completely worthless imo. All that philosophizing ain't gonna help you make a better game. Good game design happens when hunched over code, vigorously testing the same 30 second stretch over and over and over and over to make sure it's fun. It doesn't happen in an armchair.
Not that analyzing games is worthless. Having a well thought out goal for how your game plays and why is mandatory. But complex ideas will never be realized without practice.

I agree, but…Squire Grooktook wrote:On that subject, game theory blogs that preach philosophy and superior design are pretentious and completely worthless imo.
…this on the other hand is only true for non-narrative games at best. A lot of the changes to story-driven games, how they implement and present story and how the narrative and interactive segments are interconnected in those was at least influenced by the discourse and by analyzing what works in games in that regard and why it doesn't in other instances. The problem with blogs/guys like these is (or gladly was in that case), that a lot of people still seem to be lost in the nineties, were the discussion was all about gameplay vs. narration (which in the end was more a conflict between academic branches and about supremacy in the field than about games), about who got the one and only true concept of gaming and other stuff like this, while I got the impression that it's much more open with less narrowminded concepts nowadays.Squire Grooktook wrote:All that philosophizing ain't gonna help you make a better game.
