That jars my memory.
I'd given the hint book to a school friend and instructed him to not let me see it so I could beat PSII raw-like.
The green dam is the point I pleaded for my friend to let me see the hint book.

Phew. Just beat it (PSII). The final bosses were surprisingly easy.

As a coherent game I prefer the first one. This one had some nice story twists though.

Probably if you didn't use the maps. I had to level of considerably if memory serves. That was like... ugh...30 years ago, though. :|

Totally concur. Speaking as someone that shat his pants playing the first one in 1987 (and played it through many, many times) it was probably one of the games most influential to me. Never to be topped. I did look forward to II & III, and enjoyed them quite a bit. The $100 price tag of EotM (and the fact that I was in college w/ no genesis) meant I didn't play that for a few years... and didn't really develop any love for it.

Anyway, congrats. Can't wait to see your posts on the next games. :)

I find it funny how Amy's name was originally Anne in the JP version and Anna's name was originally Amia.

Skipping the third one for now. PSIV is great. Seems like they must have increased the dev team by a tenfold at least.

The Saturn version has load times now, bit of a bummer but it's bearable.

That's the team I used as well. If I played again I'd ditch Amy, though. Maybe pick up Kain. Most of Amy's time in my party was spent healing herself and doing no good to the other three.

Heh, such innocence. That's a combination of experience, increased ROM size, and the desire to have one big send off for the franchise.

It'd have been a miracle if SEGA didn't force those guys to stand in soup lines to eat.

Just beat The End of the Millenium. Rushed it because I've been itching to replay Lufia II, but now I'm totally burned out on RPGs. Great characters and some awesome concepts in the setting, but I didn't like that the story went the ancient evil route near the end. In some ways it looks like the devs decided on another plot more than midway through development, with the thing behind Dark Falz wanting to reach Ryukros - only to have that not really matter a few minutes later.

I'll probably give PSIII a run much later, and then at least check out PSO on Dreamcast for the heck of it. Apparently there's still servers up, is anyone in the loop on this?

I mean, he seems like an ancient evil in PSI at least?

I put in loads of hours into PSO and PSO2 (really... loads). Not sure if checking out PSO at this point is really worth it. When it came out, it was magik. DC & GC version both had great communities and were a lot of fun. It wasn't Phantasy Star but it was at least something. PSO2, shockingly enough, is quite a great successor. I wish I had the life where I could put in the time that it requires. I don't though, so don't bother.

I remember reading that it was originally planned to be on Sega CD with dungeons similar to those in PS1. Too bad they ditched the PS1 style dungeons.

I believe there's even an image of it somewhere at phantasy-star.net. Too bad the guys hit counter stopped working. Anyone should check that page out for the simple fact that it has had only one redesign ever I believe (and that was probably 20 years ago).

Dark Force's scheme to beat your team to Rykros was presumably an effort to stop them from aquiring the Rings. Of course that doesn't happen, and random encounters with the 魔物 horde is the only real sign of their presence (aside from the brief scene where the tower guardian KOs a couple of them). (It's not clear how the 魔物 manage to travel between planets or if they can just teleport.)

The other purpose served by Rykros in the story is to explain why Dark Force appeared more than once, since it never did in the earlier games.

BTW, after PS4, the story continues (sort of) in my fan game (need Ootake, Magic Engine, or a PCE flash card to play)

I'm not expecting to get much gameplay and enjoyment value out of it, just want to give it a spin to satisfy my curiosity.

When I played it a few years ago it was a good game to just pickup whenever and just play a mission or two. If I hadn't switched to Linux I might still be playing today.

They originally introduced Rykors as a place of all knowledge. Then it was just a place where someone tells people about the Algol system and PD. I expected much more! Before the exposition scene on Ryukros after clearing the towers it appeared to me like PD aimed to gain control over spacetime, and that Dark Falz appears every thousand years in the Algol system because it's vaguely tracing the orbit of Ryukros.

btw the illustrations of the Saturn collection has an image with Dark Falz written in roman letters as "Dark Phallus". No idea where they were going with this thing if this is the intended reading lol

I found it was something that had to be paid strict attention to, w/ the emergency quests and whatnot. Don't get me wrong, it was fun as balls, and there was tons of stuff "to do". But, I admittedly have an addictive personality. I can't just enjoy things - I have to immerse myself (maybe even make a website dedicated to it :| ), so w/ games like this I get sucked in. A friend in japan kinda twisted my arm to join and we had a blast playing together, bitching about life on the phone as we played. Fun times. I simply don't have that time now. Doing better focusing on more fruitful side projects.

Qantas airlines is pronounced "Cuntus" in Japanese.

Thinking back, I probably missed quite a bit because of my then lacking japanese skills. I get the addiction argument. Used to be like that - nowadays I just get burned out when I play a game too much.

I think that was probably for the best.

Now, imagine the refinement of Phantasy Star IV combined with the challenge and dungeons of PSII - the ultimate JRPG experience.
