Jello Biafra on Ministry action! I believe there was a cooperation of the sort between him and NoMeansNo guys too. Check out "staff roll" of this Pigface album as well. I saw Masami Akita (Merzbow) on that list at some point (1994 year's review in a rock music magazine).

P.S. Pigface appears to be oddly scarce on CDs out there, weird.

It is relieving to meet someone who has learnt about Lard NOT from the Natural Born Killers OST, though.

Fuck me, every time I return to this one I love it even more. Image

It tended to pop up on "foundational metal" lists in the mid-90s, and that was certainly the motivation I had for picking it up as a kid. I didn't get quite that experience from it, certainly not compared to something truly primal like Master of Reality. Revisiting it now, I get why it sorta wrong-footed me at the time. I liked it, but couldn't quite figure out WTF it was meant to be, and soon retreated to the unambiguously metal as fuck comforts of Vengeance/Defenders/Painkiller.

Stained Class is at its core balls-hard classic rock in a rapidly-cooling metallic shell, but it also has a fair bit of motherfuckin disco in it, and the amalgam not only works but absolutely blazes, as in its preening beast of a title track - the dead-eyed strut underpinning the progressively more blazing, apocalyptically worded structure is irresistible.

"Exciter"'s proto-speed metal is probably the most acclaimed track here, a fine opener to be sure, but the title track, "White Heat/Red Hot," "Saints In Hell" and "Heroes' End" are the record at its idiosyncratically fabulous best. Cocky riffs, Les Binks' jazzy grooves, impeccably glossy mirror-ball production, and Rob Halford at his most thespian, wailing eloquently grim lyrics - a sharply grounding contrast, along with the sledging guitar sound. The end result is massively hooky, entertaining, theatrical rock, delivered with an unmistakably harsh smack neutralising any hint of cheese.

Along with Exciter, "Invader" and "Beyond The Realms Of Death" are respectively sleek and bleakly operatic glimpses of the incoming NWOBHM, probably the nearest to that old Metal Edge blurb calling this a perfect intro metal record. British Steel is fundamentally less interesting, but a much surer bet on that account. This one's an odd hybrid of classic rock heft, heavy metal architecture and cutting-edge late-70s gloss, inimitable for it.

I'll give that link a go Obi. bm is the style I listen to the most so it certainly piques my interest

I 'member learning a bout LARD back then since I was big into Ministry and seeing the papmphlets for Wax Trax and stuff, I'd get exposed to that and Revolting Cocks (another collab) etc. I knew Jello was in LARD but I gotta admit I actually never gave them a listen (or maybe heard a tune or two, but can't remember). Anyway, Jello's vitriol over Ministry mechanical riffage sounds like a good match

I'm also of the opinion that Stained Class is a grower. (dong analogy regarding Halford, that was pretty good eh?) I gave it maybe 10 full spins or so this far, but I had intended on keep listening to it every now and then. it's very captivating record that gets better with each listen.

I have Rob Halford's solo album Made of Metal in my music library and I wince slightly when it comes on.
It's kinda extremely mediocre. The lyrics for everything are way, way, way goofy too. Everything. The lyrics really hurt the album badly.
I still enjoy it on on some level, but it's still kind of a clunky mess.

The title track is awful, the whole thing just makes me wince badly. The lyrics in it are particularly corny.
Half of the songs are similarly some degree of painful, and the other half are just kinda okay.

Still, it has its high moments. Matador is probably my favorite song by a mile [it is a lot of fun], and I like how goofily edgy The Mower is. NO AIR! NO LIFE, NO EXIIIIIIIIIIIIT! Just gets a massive smile on my face.
I'd like Hell Razor more, but he sings it kinda oddly.
It's not even his age, because he doesn't sound like that on his more recent Judas Priest albums.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Psalm 69 was my first encounter with Ministry, but MAYN, The Land of Rape and Honey, in the days of internet, had really stricken me. Before I knew an opening song of it plays in the Hardware movie. On that day it was released, the nineteen-nineties were born. DESTROY IT ALL!!
BIL wrote:Was gonna say I actually have the NBK soundtrack (middle-school NIN phase  ), but I can't remember Fork Boy at all.
Come to think of it, the soundtrack seemed to have gained much more popularity, around here, than the movie itself (I for one haven't even seen it to this very day). Same with Judgement Night and Strange Days OSTs. Those tell such a story of their time and age! Talking about somewhat economically harsh days here, when a licensed cassette was prized commodity. And, yes, I consider that NBK OST album valuable, in hindsight, Cowboy Junkies & all.

I plan to re-watch some of Stanley Kubrick films, this time primarily so I can re-evaluate their OSTs. I believe his approach to film music anticipated that of Tarantino's - their cinematographics are tailored TO the music, not the other way 'round, and to most memorable effects.* I.e. even viewers unsure whether they LIKE those films or not - surely REMEMBER much of them vividly.
For instance, last time I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey was maybe a decade ago. Most recently did I purchase a compilation of XXth-Century choral music, and when I heard Ligeti's Lux Aeterna from it, INSTANTLY did I recognise it as the piece accompanying Black Monolith exposition on the moon surface.

*) I'm reading it was not the case with at least 2001: A Space Odyssey, neither quite was it that way with The Shining. All the more reason to re-watch them!

I mean, rarely would I explore microtonality, sonorism, spectralism etc. around time when I'd watched it! Music this modern could sometimes be heard on the radio at my folks' place, but my interest in it was fledgling at best. And yet it stuck with me for good.

P.S. Iv'e dug out the first two Life of Agony albums, for the fist time since I've moved. River Runs Red is a bit much, isn't it? I mean, really. Wrist-slashing and then some. Still, good to have them long-buried CDs handy. The river runs red and I think I'm dying, oh yeah. You can smell the rusty iron.

I can't quite shake off the marvel at the similiarity between Life of Agony and Type O Negative albums from that period. Just, what the fuck, we're talking pretty strong(?) personalities either way, so, why the similiarities?
Fuck you, and goodbye.
Need I say more?

Boards of Canada- Geogaddi

Scottish electronic music duo. They are a bit like an evolution of mid 90's Aphex Twin that reintroduces some psychedelic and progressive elements into the mix. They handle musique concrete with way more skill and subtlety than Richard James ever could, and they manage to do it such a seamless way that you wouldn't even know there any field recordings being used.

"Geogaddi" isn't as too the point as their previous album, the seminal "Music Has a Right to Children," but it makes up for it with more sophisticated arrangements and consistent quality. Highly recommended.

My - pretty minor - issue with such a classification is that I feel this music belongs in the clubs, where I feel I DON'T belong, and it's not really meant to be listened in album format. That, I'm sure, won't stop me from exploring it, eventually.

It's also that my sister's bosom buddy of yesteryear, then-rapidly deceased, was deeply into Aphex, Juno Reactor and such, so those names always bring pretty eschatological associactions with them, in my book.

Clarinet sonatas and a trio by Johannes Brahms, all night long. Carl Reinecke's chamber music for clarinet, horn and piano. Apparently the latter was born under Danish rule, which technically makes him Dane. Yurop, aye? Carlsberg, Asta Nielsen, Olsenbande, nation branding! LEGO.

If you haven't listened to Boards of Ca. much, you start with MHTRTC. It's not club music in a dance to it way. It's good background music for a gathering situation or a lounge situation, but it's chill-out heady music, not get up and bust-a-move music. I can't say that no one dances to it ever, but it certainly wouldn't be my choice to dance to, and I wouldn't want to consume it that way.

It's conceived of very much as sinking-into-a-couch-and-staring-at-the-ceiling-while-the-colors-swirl-around-your-head-music. Aphex Twin is much, much, much dancier that Boards. (on everything but SAWVII)

It's *the* BOC masterpiece for sure. To me, the two albums are a bit like Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. The former being more focused and having a greater number of instantly memorable tunes, the latter being subtle and sprawling, only revealing stand-out tracks upon repeated listens and never growing old.

+1 for early BOC works. I would call these, perhaps, Ambient or trip hop, or whatever they might be. As background music to listen while studying or working (at home), they might be unmatched (those, early minimalism compositions by Philip Glass and Steve Reich, and perhaps Pat Metheny's).
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

trip hop is great for studying or WFH, fully agree. Listening to those BOC records right now and enjoying it

I also like listening to neo-new wave/synthwave when working

minimalist electronica with a bit of dream-like vibe, in general is winner in my books.

and although its a very gimmicky style (but all genres kinda are, tho) that LoFi Hip-Hop channel on Youtube is fun work tunes. Check out Adam Neely's deconstruction of that channel's microtonal vocal-less tunes and explanation as to why it's conceptually lazy/requires lo-effort. but it is kinda fun sometimes  very chill. I believe the J Dilla/?uestlove-type unquantized drum beats do require some effort tho (at least requires feel). so there's that

I guess the musical genre label used for Boards of Canada is IDM, if you're unfamiliar with it. (Intelligent Dance Music)

It's both pretentious and awful at the same time, but the only other label that fits is "electronica," and that's just way too vague.

If you're looking for something of a similar ilk that is more contemporary, I would highly recommend Pye Corner Audio to anyone who likes BOC.

https://pyecorneraudio.bandcamp.com/

All of his music is mastered from tape sources, directly to 1/2 reel to reel, and the initial release of cassettes is dubbed directly from the reel to reel master.
You'll most likely never be able to buy one of the tapes. People snipe the releases and instantly turn around and sell them for hundreds of dollars.

I would recommend the Black Mill Tapes. 3 is my personal fav.

Some piano concert by F. Liszt just heard on the radio, Krystian Zimerman pianoplaying. I can't seem to shake off my awe at how modern it sounds to me. Let's just say I'd sooner mistake it for something by D. Shostakovich than for anything by F. Chopin. The latter's piano music must have formatted my idea of romantic piano subliminally.

I find myself pleasantly indulgent towards Life of Agony two first albums. Is it something specifically New York, that tempo rubato of theirs? Keeps reminding me of Type O Negative and - here I come again - early Swans. Something very counter-motoric, rarely found in rock music (SLOWLY-played Death/Black Metal notwithstanding, such as early Anathema, if memory serves).

I legit didn't know Life Of Agony for some reason, until last week when watching mini-docs on both Alt-metal(don't really like that tag but whatevs) and NYHC, of which they seem like an adjacent band but on the more mainstream stage

Don't know Type O' enough but what I heard is savage riffage (and absolute excellent production for the time, one that has held up superbly) so I will give them a go

I'm a bit clueless about their earlier and later works (A CASUAL NOOB  ), but Bloody Kisses rules for chuggy, sensibly poppy crystalline-synthed doom. I seem to recall its reissue adding a ton of skits/intermissions/etc that kinda detract, so I had to edit them all out in foobar (Pete Steele and co were funny motherfuckers, make no mistake, but I wanted NONSTOP DOOMPOP). Or maybe they were always there...? Damn, it's been a while. MACHINE SCREW is pretty amusing, and the best companion the sleeve art could hope for. Image

The screams of despair/release heralding the blistered-black title song's solo are something else Image You gon need a heavy-duty hydraulic crane to heft this funereal dirge for Pete's departed cat Image

Also some of their earlier (or at least Pete's earlier) mischievous Carnivore hardcore. KILL ALL THE WHITE PEOPLE

October Rust is BK's synthier, ethereal side dialled way up, not sure how well-liked it is among TON fans but I always enjoy it on my occasional end-to-end revisits. Some silly pop numbers but they're done quick, all about WOLF MOON and HAUNTED. Petey shoulda wrote (ahem!) women's literature, he eating druid priestess pussy like a man possessed.

Tears of Sahara

Coulda come straight outta Winds of Thunder or Sapphire's staff rolls. Far predating them (1987), but that's exactly the deluxe sound those devs sought when CD audio became a thing. Beautiful, scenic, soaring, with BIG yet tastefully-restrained production.

This one not only sounds like an STG boss track, its title is shmuppin as fuck too. :o

Tony MacAlpine is rad and he has lots of rad friends, including Dio! MAXIMUM SECURITY recommended for fans of PCE-CD styled metal. Image

A bit of a sob story coming up: touching reminiscence of River Runs Red is that, when I was second-hand borrowing it from a girl a bit older than I (who I had a puppy crush on at the time), she mentioned casually it was "very suicidal music".
Spoiler
Since she eventually had commited suicide herself, that remark of hers keeps coming back lately, as I listen to it again.
That off my chest, "it's these words and music..." They are like The Who in that genuinely depressive content is followed by a struggle for survival. Something I'm not quite buying from Pearl Jam, whose The Kids are Alright live cover, heard once on the radio, displeased me pretty badly.

I'm amazed I've never seen MacAlpine mentioned before... seems to be one of those unsung journeyman types. Maximum Security reminds me of a Glenn Tipton solo album without all the (not entirely unsuccessful) genre-hopping of his actual one (Baptizm of Fire).

This is one of the forming, and I mean FORMING Metal albums to me, in the history of ever.
I could talk on and on and on about it, but enough said.

Thing is, for years upon years had it been re-issued with another, awful cover. I've bought that reissue at least twice, in a cassette, then a CD form, listened to each a lot, but had NEVER quite accepted the new cover. Now I feel relieved out of a sudden.

A thing severly tough to "sell" in a foreign tongue is just how much reminiscent of Polish Modernism (so called "Młoda Polska" - literally "Young Poland") the lyrics are. Like, it was VIRAL - we've all been exposed to samples of it for so long that it now seems natural.

I like the vibe. To me, this sounds like Celtic Frost a bit. Certainly a lot cleaner, more modern, more focused and that lead guitar is obvi much different being on top of the mix like that. just sort floating up there.

The bass drums and the breaks and structure though. They had to be listening to Tom GGGG.
