I had previously given a couple distracted listens to Poland's MGLA and their album Exercises in Futility, and it hadn't hooked me. But that changed this weekend as I gave it a serious listen. And it clicked with me

I usually listen to more savage/vicious black metal, but I gotta say, this is one of the best atmospheric BM albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. And I do enjoy that style every now and then. This is just so damn well-made, and very catchy. It absolutely is, epic as fuck

Continuing the weekend's (and, really, the year's) theme of "Texas death metal supremacy", I've got Imprecation -- Satanae Tenebris Infinita blasting now

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KqtX0Wti2I

I defy anyone who likes churning evil death metal to not worship that album. The dirt of the grave, the fires of hell, and possession by all manner of foul spirits all in one album -- masterpiece! I can't wait for the follow-up, coming in November...

That band -- and, more specifically, the first time I saw them live in 2009 -- are the sole reason I play death metal today and not black metal. Seriously, in terms of writing, I was 100% black metal, until I saw them for the first time; they blew me away so hard that it totally changed what I did on my instrument  There's a reason I wear the shirt I bought that night in every single Condemner photo.

Fun fact -- as soon as I got back home the night after seeing them, I started writing the title track to "Burning the Decadent". Like I said, they are directly responsible for my current musical direction!

Nice 8) Isn't it awesome when you find a band that just blow you away and inspires you as hell and get you pumped up to go back to the drawing board, as far as writing goes? That's a real intense experience, happened to me a couple times and each time it is pure, unadulterated joy

It wasn't a case of "finding" the band, per se; they were a legend in Texas, and of course I had heard and enjoyed their "Theurgia Goetia Summa" demo compilation from their first active period in the '90s. But seeing them play that stuff (plus a cover of "Return to the Eve", and the two new songs from their then-upcoming "Sigil of Lucifer" EP) live was a fucking revelation! One of the most important nights of my life, easily.

Frankly, A Cappela - The Persuasions sing Zappa. Don't want to be redundant, the title says it all; that guys do a cappella covers of, of course, Frank Zappa. good shit. If you want a preview, just look for their rendition of Electric Aunt Jemima. The albums also features Zappa classics like "Love of My Life", "Any Way The Wind Blows" and "Lumpy Gravy".

I suppose I've been blasting the fuck out of old W.A.S.P. favourite The Crimson Idol enough this weekend to post it up. Blackie Lawless knows his catchy as fuck serrated arena metal. He also knows his sleep-inducing AOR ballads, which is why god created playlists - shitcan "Hold Onto My Heart" immediately, it is emetic. Otherwise, this thing is tempestuous. Rad hammering guitar tone, and the motherfucker can sing. Even the power-balladeering elements of the other songs work alright, given the fury elsewhere. Sugary fun with a notable kick. And a very daft story about "hawneh hedgehawgs," but IDGAF and it stays out of the way!

>Arena of Pleasure
>Chainsaw Charlie ("I'M A LYIN' MOTHA FUCKAAA! THE CHAINSAW'S MAH TOOL!")

This is the 1992 one I'm referring to. Apparently he remade it recently, but I've no idea if it's good or godawful. His more recent WASP stuff isn't that bad tbh, he knows his niche. Also "Wicked Love" from his unfortunate "down w/ the kidz" NIN phase is legitimately good sleazy pop-metal.

I just discovered the lovely Patrice Rushen and I am completely awe-struck... legit blown-away for real

Seriously, what a damn talented woman. Dammmmmn... Why don't we ever hear about her?

She writes all her stuff(and for others), she sings, plays keys(she is an extremely talented jazz pianist) and many other instruments(almost all) on her records. Played on a ton of others' records too. Produced too. Been sampled to hell and back.

She's one of the very best in the trade as far as I'm concerned. That shortie really packs a punch! she's dynamite!

PATRICE RUSHEN

REMIND ME 1982
(r&b hit so mellow, and so incredibly tight. slightly mysterious-sounding chord progression over a sexy lil' strutting beat gives this one a truly mesmerizing feel)

FEELS SO REAL (WON'T LET GO) 1984
(beyond hip r&b/pop. completely savage. dreamy, hazy vibe. intoxicating. perfect summer jam for the city. let's go rollerskating everyone!)

HAVEN'T YOU HEARD 1979
(sharp disco/funk track. As someone in the comments said : you could slide this in a house set in 2018 and it would still tear the roof off.)

Hit me up for more PR tracks suggestions

Vaporwave album. Doesn't use that weird voice sample, so it's very endearing.

Just what I needed on a slow Saturday afternoon. :D
then youtube autoplay served up this catchy tune
Loose Ends - Hanging On A String
I love it!

Some of what I've been listening to lately
Wally Badarou - Echoes

and surprising to me, I really really love Rare Silk. There was a time I would have scoffed at vocal jazz and thought it corny, now I'm seeing them as one of the finest groups of any genre ever.
Rare Silk - American Eyes (Vocal/Synth Jazz, USA 1985) (their debut CD, but as can be seen in the last link, they'd been performing for years)
rare silk - (I can recall) Spain
rare silk - sugar
RARE SILK at the Breckenridge Jazz Picnic July 1982

I don't know what I was doing when this was released, but I knew nothing about it until few days ago. Luciferian Towers is the newest Godspeed You! Black Emperor album. The french canadian band is more inspired here than in their last albums (that were still good, on their own merits), more comparable to the energy in F♯ A♯ ∞ or the classic Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. There's a noticeble lack of the speech and noise tracks they used to include mixed in the songs. Instead, Luciferian Towers focus in the arranges. Maybe it was a sign that the band believed that the songs could talk for themselves without the need of ambient and noise effects. Oh yeah, speaking of which, Godspeed is a instrumental group with distorted guitars, acoustic bass, violins, etc, combining everything in some kind of mix of punk and classical music. They also don't like to be called a post-rock band. It might even be my favorite Godspeed album! Now, I'll be waiting for a equaly great return of A Silver Mt Zion.
