Oh boyz, I'm not usually too found of beautiful voices and ladies singing shenanigans, but I know at least two ladies who can sing : Celine Dion, and Bjork.

Celine has that power and amazing voice everyone knows, definitely one of the best in the mainstream ladies. But Bjork has talent and a voice that can transport you far away. Just have 3 saxophones, be 19 forever, have a mini yellow dress, and listen :

4mat - Surrender

https://4mat.bandcamp.com/album/surrender

One of the three chip artists I consider the holy trinity. The other two being Random and Trash80.

Anyways great, melodic, and moody with beautiful seamless transitions between tracks. One of my favorites from him.

Hey I got sucked into Iron Maiden on Youtube a few times since we were discussing them here. They're still kings, even if Speed of Light is not to my liking.

What are peoples opinions of A Matter of Life and Death? Personally I think it stands with their best work of the 80's.

Solid record. I wasn't into "Different World" or "These Colours Don't Run" but I like most of the longer tracks, with three going onto my GOAT Maiden playlist.

Lord of Light (ominous, explosive and soaring, right back to Time/Seventh Son-calibre cinematic galloping)
Brighter Than A Thousand Suns (blunt force with haunting melodic accents and Maiden's trademark masterly gear-shifts)
The Legacy (the eerie intro, deafening kickoff and elegiacal finale make it my favourite Epic Album Closer™ of their catalogue. great depressive, flickeringly hopeful lyrics)

Can it be put to rights, now? Only time will tell
Your prophecies will send us all to hell as well

I've enjoyed their last three albums (AMOLAD, Final Frontier and The Book of Souls) as much as anything from the first Bruce/Adrian era. The only mkII record I'm not very keen on is Dance of Death, mostly for that absolute nothing of an opening track "Wildest Dreams." I really don't like that one, at all. Even DoD has at least one killer in Montsegur, though. Brutal bone-juddering riff, diabolically preening chorus, seamless shifts between - one for the shortlist.

Burn like a dog or you live like a slave!

Haven't any time at all into Final Frontier with the exception of Talisman? That one feels like it could have been a track on Powerslave.

Dance of Death is ok, yeah Wildest Dreams is forgettable and I don't care at all for the last two tracks either - Journeyman and Age of Innocence I think is the other.

It does have Passchendaele though.

I haven't listened to a thing after Brave New World (well, I think the later records spinned once or twice on Spotify while I was working, but can't remember them clearly enough).

Will have to give them a serious listen

Listening to Ozzy solo atm and I'm annoyed that none of the compilations have Shot in the Dark. Aside from the first issue of the one on CD with a cross on it. (the Ozzman Cometh). even the 2nd print of that CD did away with SIND and Crazy Babies as well.

Was looking at Diary of a Madman compilation on LP but, no Shot in the Dark nor Crazy babies. What gives.

Yeah, good stuff! Bruce at his most operatic and picturesque. Like Rime it really takes you on a journey, not coincidentally a punishing nautical odyssey.

I like the opening track Satellite 15 - I guess it could be considered an intro, but the alternatingly primal/mechanistic drumming and keening guitars, and the uneasy pressure throughout, are excellently done and quite unique for Maiden canon, and Bruce kills the grim vocals.

"I AM HERE!"

It segues straight into the stadium-rocker title track, which unlike Wildest Dreams I quite enjoy. Upbeat but not cheesily so.

Starblind is one of the proggier things they've done, almost jazzy at points. I really like it, darkly atmospheric and calculatedly unruly, conspiciously avoiding their familiar gallop. Interesting lyrics.

Isle of Avalon and When The Wild Wind Blows are as textbook seven-minute 21st century Maiden as it gets, but I like 'em regardless.

As always, I feel like I'd be remiss without mentioning Bruce and Adrian's Accident of Birth and The Chemical Wedding, two more records I'd file with their 82-89 glory days. King In Crimson's augmenting of Maiden theatrics with Sabbath doom is magnificent.

ARISE (■`ω´■)
AWAKE (■`W´■)

Man, that sucks. Still got my old double CD (with disc 2 full of them HI-TECH QUICKTIME VIDZ Image). I remember the liner notes, where Ozzy commented on SITD being one of his rare mainstream hits. Good song, I thought it was entirely credible despite Ozzy's apparent self-consciousness at "going pop." Especially liked Jake E. Lee's guttural yet catchy riff. Song's not a million miles away from Defenders-era Judas Priest, tbh.

I guess publisher fuckery's to blame there? Odd with Sharon's typical iron grip on these things...

Old Priest favourite Defenders of the Faith. Pure entertainment! Stadium-catchy, technically dazzling metal with BIG FUCKIN BAWS Image

GET SOME BAWS YA CUNTS (・`W´・)

The arena-tailored closing title track kinda dozes off, but everything up to that point is a mirror-sheened chromium-plated metal shredding machine. Even the two massively hooky power ballads are heavy as fuck. Released hot on the heels of their landmark Screaming For Vengeance, does it proud down to the MECHANIMALIZED sleeve art.

Pretty much  as a kid listening to my bootleg tape copy, I didn't know Heavy Duty/Defenders of the Faith were even separate songs, they were just the "welp time to go!" coda. Priest had a distinct habit of padding out otherwise killer LPs with those clap-along fillers (also United and Take On All The World, can't even remember what records they're from Image)

I'd forgotten what a ridiculous sex song Eat Me Alive is, this is some Spinal Tap fucking  I'm not even disdainful of the PMRC alleging it was rapey, you gotta read between the lines to see it's merely about slamming so primal the guy one floor down gets chunks of ceiling plaster in his Horlicks Image

SQUEALING IN PASSION AS THE ROD OF STEEL INJECTS (・`W´・)

Especially dig those BROOTAL thrash-prefiguring power chords the chorus, already a flame-spewing sex banshee, sprouts like some hellish bone hammers towards the end of its short, violent lifespan. Image KK Downing later said it was a deliberate attention-getter but it's a legit cracking song too.

Missa Alleluia by Pierre de la Rue, a somewhat lesser known than Josquin des Prez, yet nonetheless competent Franco-Flemish composer of the Renaissance. Capilla Flamenca ensemble singing (the one and only performance of it I managed to find printed on CD).
I advise anyone attempting to tackle the subject matter to listen any such piece at least twice, not even most carefully, just let the modus sink in. I've been deeply submerged in listening to pretty "serious" music of the sorts for years, yet to this day I find switching between Renaissance, Mannersism, Baroque etc. modi fairly time-consuming. At the first "proper" listening to a piece new to me, I can barely even hear the music ("see the forest for the trees" as they say). Just the second listening is typically enough for me to pick up and play the ball, though.

I was watching some Bernard Purdie videos and happened across some Steely Dan.

Been listing to the Aja album. It's great as background noise while working from home.

Otherwise, most everything else I listen to is classic rock. Lots of the huge artists like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Boston, etc... and I usually stop when it gets to hair metal.

One of my uncles was into Steely Dan - Aja's the CD I always remember from back then. Never tried them out, but was recently recommended their "Show Biz Kids" as similar to Ween's "Little Miss Mandee" AKA Best Song About A Cat. Grooving stuff.

That's a cool song.

Those guys are crazy talented. The title track from Aja has some amazing instrumental parts. There's a part in the middle where the drums and sax explode and it is just about the best thing ever. And the ending drum solo is pretty wild.

Also the production values are really good. Aja is a great reference album if you want to test out your stereo.

It peters off totally at the end, sure, but I sure as balls still have fondness for the end bit anyway.

also, lumping Night Comes Down in with Heavy Duty/Defenders of the Faith is just kinda rude, Night Comes Down is a real song and Heavy Duty kinda isn't :P

I like "Night Comes Down" too, and "Out In The Cold" from the infamous Turbo, but I see why they're a bit mopey for some. Priest have always loved their ballads and the 80s put 'em on horse roids. Image Going back to their 70s catalogue, their disco-esque cover of "Diamonds And Rust" is fun too. Old-timey acoustic ballad "Epitaph" is cool, albeit blown away by the stricken King Crimson lament of the same name.

If we make it, we can all sit back and laugh / But I feel tomorrow, I'll be crying...

Fuck! YT deleted my favourite performance, the Hyde Park 1969 bootleg! Studio's alright, but the boot has a spareness that only enhances the elegiacal doom. FUCK EM I'LL DO IT LIVE via Dailymotion, who apparently don't have timestamps! What cunts! Image PLS SKIP TO 22m50s Image

"Here Come The Tears" is a bit overwrought, and not in the fun stadium-massive way as NCD/Cold. "Beyond The Realms Of Death" from Stained Class PWNs it in the suicidal moping stakes. At the bottom of the barrel, "Last Rose Of Summer" is the real song Priest fans should kill themselves to Image (Rob Halford, who in 1986 witnessed his then-boyfriend friggin' shoot himself dead right in front of him, has expressed only sorrow for these poor young donuts and their grieving families - by all accounts, a lovely man. I'M NOT  RIP MUPPET FACE DUDE )

Damn, I needed this.
It's a good thing youtube-dl exists. It's nice that it works with not-Youtube too.
thank you -x option

Priest's song Epitaph is great [despite sounding a liiiitle corny at parts], and then the the transition into Island of Domination just hits like a truck, damn.
BEWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARE OF THEIR COMING!

I keep forgetting Out In The Cold was on Turbo, since the album isn't in my music library and I instead have a live version of the song on its own.
Love the song, but damn, the album version sounds a bit to me.

Don't like Night Comes Down 8) But hey, from the opening track Freewheel Burning up to Heads Are Gonna Roll, is one hell of a run. Most bands would kill to just write 1 songs from that section, in their entire buttfucking carreer. Here, Priest lays down 7 of them back to back, on the same motherfucking RECORD. Impressive to the everest-height degree, to be sure.

re : Steely Dan. I'm not too much into jazz/fusion, but slowwwwwwwwly opening up some so I may give it a spin.

A great music theory/studio production Youtube channel I follow, often talks Jazz and virtuosos, including the fusioney variety and Steely Dan and it's legendary cast of players are often mentionned, which makes me sorta want to give it them go at some point.
Spoiler
But I kinda am reluctant to jazz in general, because at heart I am a pop guy. and while I understand that jazz is a vocabulary that you have to first understand, in order to speak it/fully experience it : well I am just not fully there yet. I don't get too much enjoyment from spotting spicy chord progressions, nor from noticing how a soloist went from this scale to that one for an interesting shift, in his solo. nor from marveling at technicality. To me if it's not br00tal then it's gotta be all about hooks, after hooks, after ass-pounding hooks. so jazz/jazz-fusion is a bit of a hard sell for me.

Having said that, I did open myself up slightly over the years. Namely by watching a lot of music theory from the aforementionne channel (watched several videos every week for the last three years, really got exposed to a metric ton of solid theory and even tho I don't assimilate most of it, it still helps my tastes progress. and will probably help my playing a bit, long term). But also by dabbling in '80s J-Pop which in addition to solid funk, boast it's fair share of light fusioney-jazz. So if there ever was a time for me to give Steely Dan a go, it'd be now and i think I will indeed give it a spin soon.
I've been exposed to Bernard Purdie, Larry Carlton and Steve gadd parts already so my interest is piqued.

Larry Carlton seems like a beast guitar soloist for sure and his work on Royal Scam record seems highly impressive from a melodic standpoint.

Steve Gadd, seems just technically flat out unreal.

I've gotten aware of Bernard Purdie from that same channel, and he seems like quite a legendary drummer. master of the shuffle groove. and Jeff Porcaro being his biggest ''student''. from all acounts he seems like he has one of the tighest groove ever so I'm definitely interested in hearing morefrom him

Hellraiser - best of the Epic years, bargain bin CD get of a Motörhead compilation album. As a person familiar mostly with Ace of Spades and Iron Fist (as well as No Sleep 'til Hammersmith), I found most of my favourite tracks missing, BUT there's R.A.M.O.N.E.S., Going to Brazil, March ör Die on it...

I feel The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown) by Fleetwood Mac marks the point at which "hair metal" got conceived. Just the - incomplete, I strongly suppose - list of bands, other than Judas Priest, who covered it speaks volumes.

For real, though, Rhino Records 2013 version of Then Play On album is one of those CDs that DON'T overstay their welcome.

Ace of Spades' non-title tracks tend to get criminally overlooked, it seems. It's one helluva album starter, but I'd rank it middling overall. Love Me Like A Reptile, Shoot You In The Back, Fast n' Loose, Jailbait and The Hammer are all officially stronger. Source: ungodly hours listening end-to-end on repeat while commuting in university and god knows how many times at home in the decade since.

Loser is one Iron Fist track I think needs more love. One of Lem's best vocals and some amusing lyrics.

I'm the Doctor - master of a few words. I also found the refrain (Schlagwort?) of R.A.M.O.N.E.S. to make for some articulation practice.
Can't blame Ace of Spades for being such a strong opener! Matter of fact, I can think of only two other such album-defining first tracks: You Really Got Me instrumental on Mott the Hoople's debut (I immediately thought "It's their Ace of Spades!") and Farmer in the City on - recently deceased - Scott Walker's Tilt. The latter may seem like a far-fetched comparison, but, really, "you had to be there" when the album was new and quite a shock to the system. Few album-openers cast such a long shadow on anything that comes after them like those three.

Loser is actually pretty cool despite using disco beat, because it's using normie language to tell normies to fuck off  ''you understand me now? uh? you understand when I talk like this?''

and to the person Obi was quoting :
you're doing yourself a disservice if you're discarding all bands labeled ''hair metal'' because there's some genuine kickass units in there. mainly the mighty one-two punch of Dokken and WASP ! but there are a bunch of others. I personally love Van Halen a great deal

By the way, it's worth reading a bit about job that producers did on albums easilly called "classics" these days: Highway to Hell and Ace of Spades. Among other things, they told the likes of singers from those bands to learn a thing or two about their singing, imagine yourself doing that. All the stuff a producer must put up with, and for whose fame and glory?
Apparently the producer of Marc Almond's Enchanted also had one hell of a hard time on the job, and it took Almond years to acknowledge, in hindsight, it was a job well done. It also took me reading an actual booklet of it to realise it's HARDLY synth pop anymore, "real" instruments through and through, wow. Truly, you have to be wiser than everybody else in this line of work. Knowing better alone is not enough.

Yep always interesting to read about production of famous records! I read a lot about audio production myself, so always hungry for production notes, tips and techniques. But the story of those sessions with flamoyant artists and with, quite drankly, often LARGE egos, makes for fun reads!
