Thanks for the help, that album sounds really cool.

How could I forget the music from the Titan Overdrive Sega Genesis demo  It's by Strobe. The demo is by a group called Titan, I guess...? Pretty cool demo in its own right.

I'm a huge fan of FM game music, love those PC88/98/X1/etc. games. I've tried to do similar stuff with Mega Drive / YM2612, if you're interested: https://tomy.bandcamp.com.
louisg wrote:Also, if you want, here's a OPL2 FM track (Soundblaster/Adlib) I did last year that has that oldschool feel. It's also recorded off of real hardware:
https://chiptuneswin.bandcamp.com/track/infiltration
That's some heavy hitting stuff! Really like the drums. I'm a bit interested working with OPL2 too, but atm I have no way of recording from hardware, and I'd like to be able to do that.

So now for my recommendations...

Dengeki Nurse 2 (PC98) - First game is not bad either, but I favour the sequels music. Rocking stuff!
Marine Philt (PC98) - From the same composer as the previous, little more atmospheric. The main "suspense/tension" theme is one of the best I've heard of its kind.
Cyber Block Metal Orange (PCx8/X68) - Melodic fireworks from beginning to end, my preferred version is PC88.
Dialide (X1) - Not so known X1 shooter, with awesome and technically impressive music. It's all FM only.
Dios (PC88) - Recently found this, and it's really good.
Ferill (PC88) - I'm sure nobody knows about this. It's a puzzle game, not sure if commercial or doujin. But the soundtrack... very good sounding for being a '89 game.
Super Star Shooter (X68) - Not many tracks, but couple of them are very memorable.

I'll second that internet radio from first page and Cosmic Psycho too, great stuff.
Check out this site also: http://vgmrips.net/packs/, you can browse music by chips, composers, systems, etc.

This album is singly responsible for my foray into OST collecting.
13 odd years ago I was looking for the Landstalker Encyclopedia - a new eBay seller had come on the scene with a bunch of Mega Drive guide books ...and OST's with starting bids at $0.99

I bid on Music from Dinosaur OST purely because of the artwork, the foil embossed cover convinced me the album must be something special. And indeed it is. The magic of hearing such peculiar and unusual music started an addiction of buying miscellaneous soundtracks just to try and discover again that magic and surprise.

There is an FM Towns version which is too clean (for lack of a better word), and there is a Dinosaur Resurrection OST which also lacks the grit of the PC-88 version imo.

Nice one. Gotta love that Dinosaur artwork, was my desktop background image for a long time. Man, I wish I had real PC88 and 98 setups so that I could play these games properly. One day.

I recently came across the OST for Rhyme Star on the PC-98 and it's absolutely killer! I noticed that it hadn't been mentioned here so I had to share

Rhyme Star - World 4 (Seabed)
Rhyme Star - World 2 (Cave)
Rhyme Star - World 10 (Desert)

Not 100% sure it's on-topic, but I stumbled across an absolute gem of a tribute soundtrack to classic Konami shooter music, in VRC6 style. Downloaded it to my game music folder immediately and have listened to it frequently since.

>"Colony"
>"Iceberg That Approaches"
>"Person Goes Forward"

First two are pure 100 proof stoical shooting BGM. The last is so goofy and upbeat, I love it. Reminds me of the SFC Gradius III bonus stage tune.

I was just listening to the Ubiktune Soundshock 2 album, and came across this by an artist who I can't seem to find anything else by (Though maybe there's a track on the first Soundshock album too...?). Apparently made using FM synth with Reason and Thor, which is somewhat interesting. Good patches, and good composition.

Always happy when this topic gets bumped.

I've been enjoying this FM Synth arrange of Winglancer's first stage theme from MasterJace. A lot of his other FM arranges are great too, I like this version of Star Man's Theme from MM: Network Transmission.

I also stumbled upon the x68 version of Ys 3's ost while looking through Falcom's recent Spotify uploads, and that version of The Strongest Foe sounds like the kind of thing you'd fight Dark Falz to.

Nice to see some more activity on this thread. I'm liking that MasterJace stuff. I might have to investigate further.
Maybe I should shamelessly plug some of my own FM stuff here >_>
<_<

https://youtu.be/Atizm7mZnao?list=PLZRn ... vV37WXJAXF Funk
https://youtu.be/CSHW6MELFzI?list=PLZRn ... vV37WXJAXF Shmetal
Both are YM2151 (and only YM2151 b/c I'm using FM drums)

I did already drop them in the music production thread, but I didn't start checking that thread 'til I started composing stuff on the computer, so yeah.

Also some more highlights from the Soundshock albums:

Shnabubula - Where's My Z Pack?
Louis G - Funk Destruction / Bitcrush Lullaby
Virt - Five Nine Seven Eight
Though the whole albums are worth checking out.

Yeah, Grounseed has a really nice OST by Ryu Umemoto! I hadn't heard the first two tracks before, really nice stuff!

Haven't heard the original however...
The Slayers one has a good baseline but I found the lead to be just slightly annoying. Still good tho'
Simply delicious. I see a pixel-animated PC-98/PCE-esque cutscene when I close my eyes to this...

Ooh, check out this Shovel Knight Genesis cover! (Artist goes by Raijin)
I've looked at the source for this (it was tracked in Deflemask), and the drums are FM which is pretty impressive. Possibly better than the TFIV FM drums. The snare uses the mysterious "SSG-EG" register.

Also probably worth posting just in case people haven't seen it, the Zenodyne R OST by Heavy Viper

Not the most obscure pick but I think Sorcerian and its extra scenarios have some of the finest chiptunes around. Some really great harmonies and the way the sounds fit and work together can be really amazing.

This has been a great thread to go through while looking for work music.
BIL wrote: Another favourite album of mine, Spirit of Stone feat. Hyakutaro Tsukumo, Toshiharu Yamanishi and Tomomi Otani. Frequently the best Tecno Soft soundtrack never made. Lots of fiery rock and metal straight out of Thunder Force II-V, and some of the synths are just heavenly. Has some surprisingly funky trips into left field, too.

Yeah, with the other two, if you know their work, that's not surprising. But I think if Spirit of Stone isn't enough, than Battle Crust legitimately proves that Tsukumo is no slouch in the FM music department:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rloDnCEDgo

That Stage 5 music especially is too smooth.

I mentioned Metal Orange, it's a must have. Both PC88 & PC98 versions exist, but they're almost the same. I prefer the PC88 version of the soundtrack. Cynthia's Theme is one of the best chip tracks ever. Carat has great music too!

Eve Burst Error is another game with an outstanding soundtrack. There are more advanced versions with samples and all, but I love the YM2203 version of the soundtrack. Just 3 FM + 3 PSG and the composer(s) get so much out of that it's insane. Hacker, Marina's Room & Speculation are my favourite tracks.

I also discovered more gems from Zain Soft (developer of Dios, which I mentioned earlier). Game called "Tug Of War" didn't sound too exciting at first but that main theme is such a feel-good addicting tune. "Alfaim" is pretty obscure visual novel, it has a badass opening theme and I had to make a YM2612 cover of it.
