EDIT: Apparently they're all up on the Humble Store too.
Wish they translated and published Ys: The Ark of Napishtim as well. The PS2 and PSP versions kinda suck.
There's a PC port of Ys Seven too, published in China only, i believe.

Apparently it's on Xseed's radar, though I don't know if the whole Konami thing would make it more complicated to bring about than the others.
Is the Memories of Celcetta game a good jumping in point for Ys?
I've only played a bit of that one, but it's similar in style to Ys Seven, which maintains the "spirit" of the series but plays a bit differently. Most of the recommendations I've seen point newer folks towards Oath in Felghana (which I've also only played a little of, but it uses the same engine as Ark of Napishtim, which is the entry that got me into the series).

I'm glad I didn't skip Ys I & II. Everything relates back to them in some way, but more importantly, they're really fun games.

Depends on what you're after. On the action-RPG spectrum, The Oath in Felghana and Origin lean closer towards "action", while Ys 7 and Memories of Celceta lean more towards "RPG". They still have fun combat, they just place more emphasis on story, parties, items, exploration, unlockable skills, etc etc. Felghana and Origin are more like action games with some light RPG toppings.

You could also start with Ys I & II, but they're totally different from the newer games. Personally, I didn't like Ys I at all, but they improved everything by leaps and bounds in Ys II and turned it into something great.

Best games to jump into the Ys series is the PSP/PC Ys 1&2 Chronicles.

I actually like I a lot more than II. I (pronounced "eye", not a roman numeral 1; parenthetical present since it's unclear in this context) found II to just be boring as hell; too much talking to monsters instead of killing them, and they seemed to have waaaaaaay more health than in I. I has a couple of stupid puzzles in it, but it's more fun to actually play than II.

Neither is even close to as good as Dawn of Ys, though. That's the best of the "bump combat" Ys games.

Celceta should be a fine place to start if it's anything like SEVEN. I'd recommend it over Oath for a beginner, if only because Oath gets too caught up in its roots in a sidescrolling game, IMO.

Also, who here remembers Legacy of the Wizard? That game was always one of my favorites (I didn't find out until years later that the way I was getting the spring boots was entirely wrong, heh), and everyone always seems to forget that it exists. Best "metroid-like" ever.

I used to rent it like crazy--maybe even owned it--in my youth. Bought it again years ago when I was older but I've still yet to come back to it. Still holds up well, eh?

I'll admit that there's probably no way I can be objective towards it -- it was one of my favorites as a kid -- but I still certainly enjoy it.

There's certain things that can get a bit frustrating (make this set of precise jumps with a low ceiling that bounces you back down if you touch it! Oh, you missed? Welp, now you fall and have to play the last 5 minutes over again!), but that's par for the course for the NES era anyways.

Don't know if you guys already read it, but I translated a Yoshio Kiya interview for shmuplations a couple weeks ago. He has some comments about Legacy of the Wizard and the other Dragon Slayer games, too.

I just noticed Ys I+II, Felghana, and Origin on GOG. Is this a pretty recent happening?

I already have Japanese hardcopies, and I don't do Steam, but I could seriously consider getting these GOG versions for the convenience.

As long as it's toggleable I don't mind.

Looks more Ys than Ys 8, lmao. Fingers crossed that it doesn't have gay random generated dungeons. Also,

The Nayuta no Kiseki "Endless Trails" patch has been updated to 4.07 now. This one has translated help graphics, and a MAJOR bug fix with the monster gallery (if you went to Stellarium under Monster info on 4.04 you would get a crash. No more.) Some fixes to the script were also done.

The wait for Gurumin on Steam has just ended. It's $9.99 regularly, or $8.99 on sale until 4/6.

I didn't even know they were trying to get that on Steam.

That game takes so long unless they changed stuff up for the Steam release. You pretty much have to do everything in the game on every previous difficulty to unlock the hardest one. Which gets pretty tedious. I had managed to do everything on that on the PSP version except for the optional boss on Crazy, Crazy Boss Rush, and getting max rank on the all levels on each difficulty. I used NG+ to get through Crazy mode and it was still pretty hard for most of the game, so I wonder if anyone's crazy enough to do Crazy mode fresh.

Will probably end up picking it up in a Steam sale someday.

Edit: That achievement list looks tough. At least S rank, (though it goes up to S+++, but only S is needed) on Crazy and several other difficulties.
