Ultimate movie taglines - bring back the hype

Post by Skykid »

Lately I've been missing the vibe movie marketing used to have. We know we used to have awesome posters (different thread) and amazing logos, but one thing that used to make the maddest hype were the straplines, and the way they used to drop them.

The other day I watched Leviathan, which couldn't be called good necessarily, but afterwards I saw the poster on google images and just got hit with the power of the way they used to superglue your attention with the tag:

Image

"How long can you hold your breath?"

How fucking cool.

It barely has anything to do with the movie as there's never any threat of being submerged until the end, but it doesn't matter, it just has power. And the way they used to thread them into the trailers was amazing too, often slapping you with one word at a time between raucous climatic action scenes:

HOW (explosion) LONG (guy gets blown through a window) CAN (Fires grenade into the screen) YOU (slow motion collapse of giant structure) HOLD (someone screaming as giant structure descends on them) YOUR (water bursts through windows sweeping everyone off their feet) BREATH? (monster rises to fill the screen howling) - TITLES SLAM ON!

The art of the incredible tag line seems to have been lost entirely. So I'm begging you, please share your favourites here because I absolutely love these, and I'd really like to see the posters too, so link if you got 'em!

My favorite is from Dark City:

"They built the city to see what makes us tick.
Last night one of us went off."

Oh that is good!

Movie's not that old either.

The last *great* movie tagline for me has to be Stallone's last Rambo. The original theatrical poster (the black and white rain shot - awesome) said: "Heroes never die, they just reload" - but I'll be damned if I can find the original poster with the tagline anywhere on google images. If I could find it in print, I'd buy it, but all the posters for sale seem to have the tagline absent. :(

I prefer other posters for the film, but that tagline has always stuck with me

Image
Way before the "oooooh, LOL Chuck Norris" bullshit. One of his best. Like an insane action film version of Halloween, tagline "The Night He Came Home!"

Image
One of the best unsung action films of all time. Everything on that poster happens and it's all amazing.

Image
Last time I wore this shirt I got a lapdance from a stripper and had to explain what was on my shirt.

Image
Goddammit right he was.

Image
Just... give us... the tagline.

Good ones, dudes! Actually just showed a buddy tonight Zombie Flesh Eaters on Blu since he'd never seen it. Has never looked better--and nastier!

Great minds etc

That Chuck Norris one looks like a good laugh, speaking as someone else perplexed by the meme who remembers ol' Delta Force / Missing In Action (enemy boss : "BWADDOCK!") Chuck. I'd nominate The Fly (1986) for the obvious file too. Great line even if it's long since become cliche.

Image

Hardly elegant, but it's the sort of unadulterated 80s rental place horror aisle fodder I'll always love.

Ohhhhh yeah. Speaking of BWADDOCK and such, I really miss namsploitation more than anything. Maybe my favorite trashy subgenre of action! Always great posters with very similar taglines.

Image
I have a 1 sheet poster of this somewhere in my hoarders nest. Needs a DVD release! Carradine VS Mako!

Image
One of the greatest mashups of all time, right up there next to The Wild Geese! ;)

Image
I can only find the shitty AMERICAN VALOR COLLECTION (which I obviously own all of) for this one. FUCKIN' RULES.

Image
Better posters exist (that actually have Richard Harrison on them,) but this rules! That gun shoots harpoons, missiles, machine gun, and shotgun! FUCK YES.

Image
Getting into post-nuke territory, but one of my favorites. Another huge gun with lots of barrels that shoots different shit!

Speaking of authentically pragmatic self defense:

^Man, almost posted that. One of the best movie posters (and movies) of all time!

I never watch dubs, but I had to watch this one dubbed back in the day.

I wanted to link the Cobra poster but Skykid beat me to it, great choice, also Army of Darkness, one of the most rewatchable movies ever. Here's few of my picks that make too much sense in context of the movie.

Image
This tagline gives chills if you've seen the movie.

Image
This tagline's awesome because it fits.

Image
Something more modern but fitting.

Fixed them, they worked before but somehow two of last links suddenly refused to work, so updated with better image quotes.

Hell yeah, awesome movie! Miss the old DVD with the reversible cover of that original poster art. Instead I'm now stuck with this garbage:

Image

Yuck! "Cleverly" marketed to attract customers into thinking it was the remake a few years back. Nasty bastards.

L.A. Confidential
Image
Devito's character that narrates the film has his characteristic "Off the record, on the QT, and very hush-hush ..."

And doesn't really need a tagline (some posters just have "PACINO | DE NIRO | HEAT" EFF YEAH), but the English covers and posters had "A Los Angeles Crime Saga", but the Spanish cover sounds a bit more poetic I think, with "An Epic Saga of Crime and Obsession"

geez, that one for Die Hard...

can you imagine a modern movie poster having that much text on it?
that's the main thing I'm getting from this thread--people (apparently) don't wanna be bothered to read anymore.
