Golden Kamuy is the best, manliest action manga and you should read it right now.

It's funny how even monthly manga run out of ideas as time goes on, but this weekly manga gets wilder and more interesting with no dull moments at all.

On another note, there's so much good manga to read right now, the most there's ever been. Some interesting stuff I've been reading lately

Fantasy:

1- Tongari Booshi no Atori/Atelier of Witch Hat: The prettiest fantasy manga I've ever read. It has amazing world building, a very unique magic system based on drawing glyphs that is meticulously explained and cool characters but... man, that art and page design.
Spoiler

Image
The manga often feels like a black and white artbook.

2 - Giant Spider & Me: A Post-Apocalyptic Tale / Owari Nochi, Asanagi Kurashi: Girl meets a giant spider-like being. They become friends. Chill slice of life with food recipes thrown in.

Historical:

1- Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, good despite being based on a Light Novel. The life of a pharmacist sold to the Chinese Emperor's harem, to work as a food taster. She soon gets mixed in the palace's intrigues. Good mystery.

2- Hawkwood. This one is an older manga by Tommy Ohtsuka, who some may known for his Slayers manga. This one is completely different from that, though, a gritty seinen set during the Hundred Years War, form the perspective of a mercenary captain named Hawkwood. No sugarcoating here, guys will do anything it takes to win even if it means fucking entire villages up, and the author doesn't save on gore. Good thing is that there's good tactics and outsmarting the opposition, which is something I appreciate.

3- Also Hox, lord and savior of forgotten dropped manga, picked up [urlhttps://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=63914]Ad Astra[/url], about the struggle of Hannibal against Scipio during the Punic Wars.

Some unusual stuff:

1- Watashi no Shounen. The premise of this manga will no doubt raise eyebrows and roll eyes. 30+ year old woman, tired of work, a shitty ex-boyfriend that is also her current boss and no prospects other than living a gray life gets into a relationship with a 12 year old boy, which starts out of a motherly feeling but is implied to grow into something else. Yes, sound like shitty fetish pedo manga, but is surprisingly devoid of bullshit, pretty well handled and characters and situations are well constructed and realistic. A pretty damn good drama.

2- Sanju Mariko. This was recently picked and only 2 chapters were translated. It's about the life of a 80 year old woman author, who suddenly finds that she is a nuisance to her family, even though they all live in the house she worked her ass off to build. She then decides to go away. Pretty heartbreaking stuff, not recommendable if you are feeling down.

3- Gokushufudou/The way of the House Husband. Web manga that got serialized about an ex Yakuza that now lives a new life as a house husband, doing chores and home stuff... but he still has his Yakuza ways. Good silly fun.

Image

Finally, Dorohedoro ended... and I can't see it getting a not-rushed finale considering there's only 3 chapters left to be scanlated. Getting I am a Hero vibes *shudder*.

Didn't watch the anime after seeing those PS1 CGI critters. Glad it's getting popular though.

Gundam Build Divers finished.
it ended pretty well, but it's hard to recommend the show now that it's over
The two major plots were both just really, really stupid, and the characters weren't great.
It's still better than Try, but it's not a great show at all.

Also, I'm still reading Devilman Lady, and fucking hell, it's cool.
There's some amazing art in it, ridiculously stylish.
actual spoilers of where I am so far:
Spoiler
Lady just got out of Hell, which was SUPER FUCKING COOL, we went through the recap bit through OG Devilman's eyes, and the girl on the swim team just tried to reveal Lady's identity.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

I didn't even notice them. And I hardly saw any more CGI bear hair after that.

There is some fondly beloved padding - such as the episode where horrible god-monsters Goku and Piccolo get their driver's licenses. But such fare is an exception - mostly it's all Goku getting punched in the back for 20 episodes, when it's not some shaggy dog story with NPC's we'll never see again, or the dreaded filler arc where no one levels up in a genre that's all about leveling up and unlocking new skills.

So I do recommend Kai overall. Even if there's a few minutes of entertainment to be found in the filler, it's still there to water down the soup.

Team Four Star's recut version handles the filler as well as one could.

Over and over again.
Hellsing Ultimate.. imo, it's darker or more graphic/gory-er than the ones you listed. The ones you listed are shounen, whereas Hellsing is seinen.
I'd say it's more similar to things like claymore, gantz, jigoku shoujo, berserk, trinity blood (manga), tokyo ghoul (manga)..

Hellsing the series is probably a bit more like the ones you mentioned (it's less graphic, story is more standard shounen-y).. which perhaps you need to watch to understand ultimate better though.

Finished reading Tezuka's Ambassador Magma. More shounen than SF, but it was still nice to read.
I think it's time to read the whole Black Jack. I read the first four or so volumes six or seven years ago after watching the 2004 anime OP and liking it (as well as seeing the titular character in Astro Boy Omega Factor on GBA), and loved the whole deal. Probably the best overall story of Tezuka's vast work.

Speaking of Tezuka, what happened to the Pluto anime adaptation? Didn't they announced it in June last year?!

Still announced as far as I know. A year really isn't long. Especially consider the fact the characters in Pluto have faces, unlike most animoo stuff.

.... dubs for movies now. Why the hell does getting some people into a room to do some talky-talky take 3+ years sometimes.

I remember that Pluto was supposed to start in late 2019/early 2020. Am I having a false memory?
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

I watched both parts of Otaku no Video recently. Quite hilarious... maybe more so now? Being more familiar w/ Gainax' story now than I was then (it was actually one of the first things I was exposed to) some things make quite a bit more sense. I wonder how much self-parody is hidden in each of the characters. Most definitely recommended. I miss the days of the simple OVA.

Black Jack: Just finished watching the OVAs and the movie. Good shit. I don't really like the style of the TV series, but the OVAs are top notch. Definitely some of the best stuff I've seen in awhile.

Nurse Witch Komugi: It's another insane magical girl parody show. Just how crazy is it? Well, on a scale of 1 to 10, Nabeshin appears in it. It's got several infamously meme'd/GIF'd scenes. Good luck.

Also, some great news .. Yuru Camp is getting a second season, film and short. Ohmigawd. https://twitter.com/pKjd/status/1048599746372202497

New season is upon us, let's look at some of this stuff.

Goblin Slayer: Just like the manga, it opens up with the infamous "noob adventurers get rekt" scene. Considering it's made for broadcast TV, it's pretty brutal.

Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara: Combines magic and time travel, I liked the premise and the first episode was promising. Looks to have a really nice art style.

Zombieland Saga: Tell me if you've heard this one before. A guy tries to make an all-zombie idol group. Apparently to capitalize on a lack of local idols. It's pretty ridiculous and hilarious. The main character dies before the opening credits.

Uchuu Senkan Tiramisu II: The sequel to the mecha/space battle genre parody short, seems like it's just as funny as the first season was.

Double Decker! Doug & Kirill: Pretty good action/comedy show taking place in a modern city. It has some nice stylistic choices like switching to a comic book like appearance. All of the characters are enjoyable to watch, the dialogue is pretty funny.

Finished it now, great show. Hanako's VA was the best, must have taken a page out of Yuu Kobayashi's work.

I really should know this. Is Japan doing things in seasons now or is this just for the localizations? This is coming from the guy that had an antenna in only 1 of 15 years in Japan.

The localizations these days are released at the same time as the broadcast, sometimes even the dubbed versions. Just about everything starts in the same month of a season.

Oh shit, that page says this is when they're releasing Conception. I was wondering why the hell they were doing an animation of a PSP jRPG about making star babies from 30 years ago, but then they announced they were re-releasing the game for the PSX4 a month back, so all makes sense now..

Umm... Background to my question which still stands: Japan never did TV in seasons traditionally. Urusei Yatsura? 196 episodes = 196 consecutive weeks. I know that VIZ broke these up into seasons... because... white people. I do realize that I'm old, and despite it being home for fucking ages, I never really bothered dicking around w/ broadcast television as it was so horrible. Anyway, in the aforementioned case and similar, those were old shows that were long finished and they could easily do that. Picking a random wikipedia page from a show and looking at the air dates, one would guess that it is just a sequel that may or may not have happened. Earliest one of these I can recall is the 2 GiTS: SAC series. Where the second is just a sequel, not really a new season.

DISCLAIMER: Last I was up to date on anime goings on, the stand alone OVA was a thing.

Oh no you're right, everything is commissioned as either a finite work or a perpetual nightmare machine that never ends.

Occasionally they do break something up or take a break. The recent Overlord season 2 and 3 were produced at the same time in a typical 26 episode batch, but released with three months apart.

And of course sometimes the rare adoptions that get to go all the way have an annual release... for like 2 years as a fluke.

It's not even a "western" thing to do television where one Prime-time tv show haunts us for 10 years, but only during the 6 months where they release new stuff and the rest of the year is a re-run. Most stuff in England and elsewhere is done on a per work basis, too.

If anyone is watching currently airing anime where the crowds aren't CGI, please notify me. The ones where they're still drawing crowds by hand must be worthy of attention.

It doesn't count if there's no crowds at all.
