I had this bad boy w/ jog shuttle on the remote. Used it for timing animu scripts.

I'm kind of shocked Japan didn't bother. Guess they were already knee-deep in LD.

That's a nice suggestion. I only watched a couple episodes years ago, and have always meant to return to it. Probably better than the Boruto I watched last night.

they redubbed the whole thing recently and the dub of the first three seasons is on Hulu (rest is sub only). it's really good if you like dubs

Not feeling the new Dororo anime, and it's not just because it doesn't use Tezuka's style. Shame.

I highly recommend opting for the Sailor Moon manga instead of the anime, as it executes its concept with far greater finesse, has significantly less filer, and is generally less obnoxious. How I ever managed to tolerate Mitsuishi Kotono's whining for 46 episodes back in the day is beyond even me.

Windaria - Fantasy themed anime that's pretty straightforward, has some really nice animation for 1986. Story almost feels like classic literature in the way it's presented. There's two countries on the verge of war, and the story deals with how this escalates. It's still very character focused, though. Avoid the english dubbed version (Once Upon A Time), it was thoroughly fucked with, including the ending.

Hikyou Tanken Fam & Ihrlie (Ruin Explorers Fam & Ihrie) - Fam & Ihrlie are adventurers looking for some ultimate power thing to remove a curse. Along the way they gather a group of others, who have their own reasons for seeking the power McGuffin, and are usually at odds with one-another. It's pretty comical, only gets a bit serious towards the very end. Definitely a must-watch if you're a fan of fantasy magic adventure stuff like Slayers, etc.

Wild 7 - Yet another over-the-top hyperviolent exploitation OVA, in the same vein as Angel Cop. This one at least tries to stay grounded in reality, and there's no psychic/supernatural phenomena. The Wild 7 are a group of convicted death row criminals that have been given another chance to act as police that are allowed to kill outside of the law. It's a pretty ridiculous setup from the start. There's a LOT of carnage, bloodshed and motorcycle action, so if that's what you're looking for, Wild 7 will deliver in spades.

Windaria rules. Inomata was one of my favorite character designers from around that time, although her later stuff is lacking. Just framed a Leda Yohko poster the other week, actually! Hoping Discotek picks those up at some point. I could see it happening.

Damn. I'm guessing that means they totally cut up the release for the US so the only way to watch it is dl'ing fan subs. Quite unfortunate.

Ruin Explorers is a solid short watch. It's one that I like to recommend to people who like fantasy anime but haven't went that deep yet.

A bit of an odd one, but Kinnikuman, it's a really old shounen series, and i think the very first to have power levels and tournament arcs(years before Dragon Ball even started), it's a classic series revolving around superheroes fighting in wrestling matches that are broadcasted and commentated which decide the fate of the world.

That is...after a while, honestly, the manga starts as being kinda like a more tame Bobobo, only not as fun and kinda boring, and it's not until the Choujin Olympics arc that things start really amping up and Suguru becomes more powerful, but after that the series only tends to get crazier and more fun.

It even has a rare thing with a cowardly protagonist who sometimes is an asshole(and in one or two particular events, downright unlikeable) who grows up, gets character development...and always starts every fight wanting to run away but being forced to fight before suddenly finding his courage and kicking ass.

Seriously, it's a fun series and a classic for a reason, plus, it's downright crazy and awesome.

Also, the series came back in 2011 starting after the point it ended in the 80's and my God, everything about it is much better than the 80's series, from story to art, but it still feels and is a classic shounen series, and Suguru is a lot more likeable in the post 2011 arcs and a lot more crazy and awesome stuff occur as usual:

Of course, it also got an anime back in the 80's if you don't mind the old animation and the fact there seems to be a lot of filler, like, here is Suguru using his first original finisher for the first time in the anime:

i just watched the first episode of high score girl on netflix and was floored at how it seems to be written a legitimate game center junkie. goes right into final fight high score minutiae in the first episode... i had been expecting to watch a single episode and scoff at the inaccuracies, but i'm actually really curious what other games, flyers, cabinets, etc. they showcase. seems to be written by someone who probably has a reasonably diverse amount of 1cc's under their belt.

i'm much, much more of a home console enthusiast, but it tickles me to see the reverence on display for late 80's/early 90's game culture as being so genuine in TYOOL 2019.

as far as it goes as an anime, it's some hyper-banal het romance with an overly idealized superplayer game princess told through the perspective of a gratingly obnoxious nerd who seems to worship ground she walks on, but... it seems maybe worth continuing to watch just for the authenticity of the game stuff.

- - - - - - - - - -

they seem to localize most names (e.g. "pc engine" becomes "turbografx-16" in the subtitles), but they curiously still used "vega" in the subtitles instead of switching it over to m bison. can't expect the level of dedication from the subbers you get out of the gccx fansub team, eh?

on the second episode now and the kid is getting called annoying for trying to evangelize the pc engine to some other kids who were talking about the sufami and didn't know about the pce. ah, yes...

I remember the manga getting a lot of love on this forum upon its initial release due to its generous (and unauthorized) references to 80s and 90s console games. Heavy nostalgia trip for sure.

Kengan Ashua, it's pratically the best martial arts manga i have read in a long time, if not ever and absolutely recommended.

True, it starts weak, but, my God, the art is awesome, the fights are the right kind of realistic yet silly, there are little to no romance or harem elements, the fights are very dynamic and easy to follow without dragging on, and it does have a lot of cool twists.

Seriously, the manga just rules, shame that the anime adaptation will be in CGI though.

And i mean it when i say it has some twists or elements of realism to it, for example, the time one of the villains, a young psycho prodigy was fighting an old Karate master, got various flashbacks to show how he became evil, starts getting a power-up due to not wanting to lose and keeps coming up with new techniques on the spot...and loses because those techniques were just improvisations and not something that was carefully created and practiced through many years:
Image
If you have any taste for martial arts, this manga is absolutely recommended...it is also for some reason, in the same universe as a comedy slice of life series the author does with high school girls called Danberu nan kiro moteru.

I don't know, i just find it hilarious that in the same universe where girls are just hanging out, exercising and getting in comedic situations there are hardened martial artists and assassins fighting to the death with characters from both series appearing in the other, seriously, one of the characters in Danberu is revealed in Kengan to be a professional assassin that has been raised since birth to kill people...something that does not come up in the slice-of-life series of course.

I don't like Danberu as much as Kengan, but i guess it shows the normal side of the setting which is cool as well.

I didn't care much for the Cobra movie, the TV OP looks sick though :P
Recently watched Kachou Ouji, the premise is really cool: a man in a midlife crisis trying go back to his golden days by playing rock music in an alien interstellar war. However the animation and writing are very lacking, overall it ended up just being "ok" in my book.
Also watched Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai!, really good family dramedy with quite a bit of metanarrative and a "theatric" direction, the first half especially is masterful.

Wow, Oshii that I've never watched. Then I saw that it was never localized so that would be why. I will have to...erm...procure fansubs should they exist.
