So much this.
My fave from back then was possibly Venus Wars' bike chase, with buddy's look of quiet psychopathic contentment as he unloads dual chainguns into his prey's vehicle.

...kinda loses its edge, knowing it was just a training run, but still - helluva image.

edit: Sweet Jesus! I just rewatched VW's trailer after like ten years and I'm already gonna blow my Nazca/Seibu-lovin' load.

Execution-wise, I don't remember it being the hellrazing action barnburner that is Ninja Scroll, but then so precious the fuck little is. Time for a revisit perhaps.

Otaku no Video - I do miss Japan's hay day of creativity. It's cringy as fuck, but come on... that shit is gold!

Venus Wars is on my watchlist for sure, been there since my boy Happy Console Gamer on YT gave it a high recommendation.

Discotek released a blu ray too last year. I'll be picking that one up for sure

It's into season 3 now. I tried and watched slightly more (2 or 3 episodes) than I did of Walking Dead (not even the entire first episode).

I have to be in the mood for it. The BD is nice.

I thought it was boring.

I think my main issue with Venus Wars is that it was just entirely unremarkable. I couldn't even tell you the names of the characters without looking them up now. It seems to be generally well received but watching the old Manga DVD definitely did not push me to want to buy the new BD.

Edit: I don't dislike it enough to eject it from my collection though, that's pretty rare.

Yeah making that GIF, I was reminded of why the movie itself left me lukewarm - lacks followthrough. A SHA-WEEET Metal Slug launches a brutal shell into a crowded city, only for the comic relief reporter gal to be humourously wafted away by the explosion.

Children, explosions do not gently lift you up. (・`W´・) Blast pressure crushes your organs. Blast wind slams your body down! Even mah boi and ranking Dragonball twink Artificial Human #17 fucked his back up during his recent jihadi exploits. Image If you are a garden variety NINGEN in the vicinity of a Great Big Fuckoff Detonation, your physiology is gonna get pulverised to shit. Image

But that's not VW's style, which I can respect if not embrace. At least the metal-on-metal is indeed FUCKIN BYOOTIFUL, giving it one component of a Geostorm/Raiden Fighters 2 anime.

Arion: It's a movie based on Greek mythology, a relative rarity in the anime world. It's good, but it's also 2 friggin' hours long, so I suggest taking a break halfway through.

Roujin Z: Let's take an old man and put him in an experimental "nursing bed" machine with wheels that has a next generation learning computer in it. What could possibly go wrong? Seeing as this was written by Katsuhiro Otomo, I'm pretty sure you've already got an idea exactly what's going to go wrong. This definitely has some comedic elements to it, as the premise and general plot development are both pretty absurd.

Golgo 13: Finally got around to watching the movie (Professional) and OVA (Queen Bee). As this doesn't need much of an introduction, it's good stuff.

I find it ironic that now, 20 years later, this topic (a less absurd version anyway) needs to be taken into consideration w/ Japan adopting robotics, coupled w/ it's demographic crisis. I watched it on VHS ages ago. Probably need to revist.

Started the movie but it played like shit on my TV for some reason. Soon.

Okay, I do believe this was, and is, a bit of a hidden gem. I saw it at a minicon in 1992 - with this video (both of which I later attained, the old fashioned way). Time Stranger Music Video. Pretty cool shit. Most of the film is fuedal, not futuristic, but I remember it being quite good. Am I right in seeing it's never been localized?

Today I learned that Yoshitaka Amano did the character designs for Gatchaman. pretty cool

(I knew he did some manga/anime works like Vampire D, but didn't know about his other works)

Randorama wrote:GP: Maison Ikkoku belongs to a bygone era together with the other series you mention.
You might find the odd adult (seinen and Josei) series that tries to engage with real life even during these times, but that would be the exception rather than the rule.

I generally think that authors below a certain age/generation simply lack the cultural awareness to address any issues in a non-trivial way.
I am reading a manga called Rainbow, which focuses on the lives of kids getting into juvenile prison right after the war, surviving it and trying to get a life afterwards.
It turns out that the author is in his '60s, case in point.

Said that, as we said a while ago Urusei Yatsura is a sexy comedy with 1-dimensional characters and '80s escapism; conceptually, the opposite of Ikkoku and one of the starting points of the many dumb tropes that you may hate in current anime/manga.

City Hunter is brilliant, manga and anime. It is "just" entertainment, but it has that suave '80s feeling (think Miami Vice) coupled with great stories, charming characters and so on.

by the way...

You still haven't read Akira, have you? Or are you waiting retirement, so that I come to your place and lend you my printed (!) version?
Maison Ikkoku didn't click to me. I'm not too interested in fiction in a real-world setting, focused on the daily lives of (relatively) ordinary people.

Urusei Yatsura has somewhat more character development in the manga. The anime took liberties all over the map, and is partly responsible for the criticism of its already limited plot.

Haven't really heard much about City Hunter or Rainbow.

Finished watching Initial D First Stage. Ugly character designs, dated CG, although serviceable, incredible soundtrack (if you don't dislike Eurobeat), fucking great races, nice story (but Christ, Mogi's dad and Takumi's flashback when he beat up those guys in the locker room, crazy shit for what it seems like a shounen story).

I'm really tempted to drop Build Divers. It's dull. They blew their load on one really cool fight... which took place outside the usual setting anyway.
It's also not making me want to buy more Gunpla anymore.

in contrast, Shinkalion continues to be a real joy that actually entertains me and has a plot that's going somewhere
Spoiler
HELL GRAND CROSS
the fights remain low budget CG affairs, but it's still got decent writing and the MC remains utterly endearing
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Iirc there were some Patlabor fans here. I pre-ordered this bad boy: https://www.rightstufanime.com/Patlabor ... on-Blu-ray

Definitely very reasonable compared to the prices of the previous releases. As anime prices go, $85 for 70 episodes and 3 movies on BD is pretty rad.

Was shocked to learn Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers (grimdark dragon quest where everyone has to be a lawyer to backstab/avoid getting backstabbed by the others) got a dub today. It's really abnormal these days for something like that to pop up three years later - the delay is practically nonexistent these days with near simultaneous localization. (Though three years is a typical wait for a movie.)

A weird licenser in this case - Aniplus Asia. Not a western outfit, but for the Southeast Asia english market which seems to be really... really taking off as a profitable market these days. Tons of South Korean and Japanese games have added english support for the region.

.... I'm kind of disappointed that the cast are actually professional western english voice actors according to MAL. Was kind of hoping it would have been done locally just to hear something very different.

Tempting. I almost bought the first and second movie during a recent sale on Sentai Filmworks' site. Can anyone speak to the quality of the Patlabor tv show and OAVs? I saw an episode or two back in the day but it didn't really hold my interest (was too easily distracted by booze and women at the time). I'm a big fan of the films but realize they're a different beast.

(Patlabor 2 in the theater was beautiful...)

You're not hallucinating. This was at one of the theaters by BicQlo in East Shinjuku. Tho I kind of regret bringing those tall cans of Asahi, had to take too many bathroom breaks.

This is the same theater that also showed Royal Space Force: Wings of Honeamise. I don't think you made it to that one.

A friend of mine and I have this running gag about me having a small bladder. I took a few Chuhi's in to one of the Akira showings and had to go out like 5 times in 30 minutes... the people next to us were less than enthusiastic. Fun times.
