Finally sat down with Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket yesterday.
We're back to the whole "kids with no sense of danger or and lack of rational thought repeatedly runs after people/robots and willingly throw themselves into dangerous situations" -kind of story setup again, I see. I see.

Music's seems dope though but the the audio mix is so flat that it's hard to hear it once the action starts. Currently only have the Nozomi DVD, is a bluray out now? It wasn't back when I bought this.
From what I've heard this is supposed to be sad and emotional entry in the Gundam saga but currently it's just kinda tone deaf, as in, people die and all the kids go "cool, a real battle!".
I'm only 2 episodes in so I'm sure there's plenty actual emotions in stock for me.

Watched the first episode of Goku Midnight Eye last night. I had seen it ages ago but totally forgot it. That was probably an nth generation VHS back then and w/ all the red & purple would have bled all over the place.

Shit like that is what reminds me that those times are gone and will never come back. Great noir environment. Ridiculous amounts of masculinity (the guy wears a fucking tie w/o a shirt for fuck's sake). High quality production. I'm also a huge fan of not having to devote a shit ton of time to a series. These stand alone , or 2-4 part OVAs are great.

Spoiler
Reminds me that they never actually explain who or what gave the guy his super magical haxxor power eye, even in the sequel. I get the feeling there was more to be explored here, maybe some sort of actual conclusion to the story, but nope. Some 80's and 90's OVAs had a really bad habit of just ending half-way or even right before the conclusion for the ultimate in animated blue balls. Probably the worst offender is Oira Uchuu no Tankoufu aka Mighty Space Miners, which is two episodes of fantastic space action/adventure with some real effort towards realistic space physics and the dangers of exposure to radiation, followed by absolutely nothing. I'm still mad.

Still watching Shinkalion. It's still weirdly good for a show that is visibly made to sell transformable pla-rail toys to kids.
It's a real shame about the budget-dome all the fights take place in, but the show's strength is still not in its fights.

it also feels like there are more than 10 episodes left, I'm actually kind of wondering if this is going to go on for more than 50eps
alternatively, they could just accelerate the pacing a fuckton, because it's definitely in its final arc
Spoiler
I'm really, really, really interested in the underground people and what happens to them. I really hope whats-his-face in ep39 isn't actually dead.
also, the show is dropping hints that Hayato is basically a newtype
oh, and I'm still watching SDF Macross, just really slowly :P
I'm really wondering who the target audience is -- adults probably weren't watching it beyond sitting with their kids watching TV, and it doesn't really seem too aimed at kids.
I think it's still fucking hilarious.
Spoiler
they just landed on Earth and the UN is fucking the Macross over by not letting them get off
kinda glad seeing Global actually act like he's an actual character at least

the three Zentradi spies are super goofy and I love it
A buddy of mine is telling me to hurry up and finish SDF so I can move on to Macross Seven, which looks great.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Yeah, still need to read it myself. I have the old English localization. Looks awesome from just browsing inside. Crazy that and Kabuto got an English release, but not Cobra. Hoping if that movie ever comes out that'll at least spawn some new releases.

Licensing fees? Sheer volume? Cobra isn't crazy long by manga standards but Goku & Kabuto are quite small. Not a lot of risk.

I'd imagine licensing. They released the entirety of Wounded Man, which at 11 volumes and for the type of manga it is has got to have way less of a fan base. But I'm thankful for that, because it's one of my favorite things and absolutely absurd.

That big-ass Patlabor box-set is coming out early next month. After much hand-wringing I went ahead and preordered. I'm pretty stoked for it.

I think the last time I was this excited to get some anime in the mail was when I was in high school and Cowboy Beebop came out on DVD.

Hagane: thanks a lot, and sorry for the earlier grumpy post. Actually, sorry for not connecting the dos: i am reading a few of their series (Hina, Hakumei and the other tiny girl, -gatari), but I simply never connected them to a single publishing house

Thanks also for suggesting the Witch's atelier. Odd fact out: I usually read manga in French or Spanish and I began reading this in French...the BD influences seem more obvious by reading it in this language (N.B. I avoid English lest I lose fluency in the other languages I know).

I would add that aside Kamuy, I am definitely not into weekly series. Authors need time to produce decent material...Except Noda, apparently (and a few others, I guess?).
Chomsky, Buckminster Fuller, Yunus and Glass would have played Battle Garegga, for sure.

Al Caral no Isan (Legacy of Aru Kararu) - Pretty interesting sci-fi OVA that tells a tale of humanity meddling with exteraterrestial ecology and it's unintended consequences. At an hour long, there's definitely some slow build-up, but the payoff is worth it.

Nayuta - A relatively obscure OVA, here. The premise starts out relatively simple with an ordinary schoolgirl, and a boy wearing a mysterious tiara. Expect aliens, espers, trippy visuals and cosmic revelations. It gets a little silly towards the end with all the exposition trying to wrap everything up, but it's still considered a cult classic.

Angel Densetsu - Short two part OVA about a nice, kind, sweet-hearted highschool kid who has a face that not even a mother could love. His downward glance, malicious grin and beedy eyes are a permanent fixture. As such, the entire show is based around the comedic reaction of various thugs and hoodlums who are terrified of him, but he has no clue anything is amyss.

Kyuuketsuhime Miyu (Vampire Princess Miyu) - Four episode OVA about a vampire and her familiar. While she does hunt down demons, she also drinks human blood, as you'd expect. Very nice horror atmosphere in this one. There is a TV series, but I didn't bother with this one, mostly because they added some cutesey looking sidekick pet.

Harta's stuff is pretty solid in general. Add Dungeon Meshi to your reads when you can.

Yeah I can see the BD influences in Shirahama's art style. It's good to be able to read French since France generally publishes a lot more of the not rabidly mainstream stuff compared to the US, being also much more open to Japanese stuff in general. I should get the recently published Spanish version.

Finally finished SDF Macross.
holy ass, it really was a soap opera, lol
Especially the last couple episodes. Was genuinely entertaining still, but I didn't actually expect it to become a literal soap opera, complete with soap opera conventions played 100% straight. The fighting consistently takes a back seat to the love story it's trying to tell.

real spoilers:
Spoiler
Max is literally perfect in every way. At no point does he do anything that can be even vaguely considered wrong in story.
it's a damn good thing he doesn't get that much screentime, so he's just really cool rather than being obnoxious
his marriage was so insane that I thought it was a dream sequence
she literally goes from trying to fucking murder him to literally married in a fucking day or whatever
she also goes from a scheming commander to a confused housewife and it's really, really goofy
when they brought their baby to go capture the ship building satellite [and had a fucking plan that worked involving their kid], I lost my shit completely, that was the dumbest thing

For a planet that got basically totally fucked, there's sure a lot of green and animals on it again after they spend like two episodes trying to hit the fact home that the place is mostly boned and desert. Like, where the dick are they getting all the resources for all this shit? I'm still kinda wondering how they bounced back to having such huge-fuck cities. There were only like 50k people on the Macross, and it's only been two years, so they couldn't have just had a bunch of kids.
Like, is like the whole population of post-war Earth just mostly Zentradi? That'd certainly make the population numbers better, but I don't know by how much. If the people were mostly Zentradi, that'd probably explain why people didn't bitch quite as much about all the constant disgruntled Zentradi attacks too, I kind of really did expect to see some pushback against the alien members of the population.
Also, there was consistently more [and better] mecha action after the "final battle" with the Zentradi, you barely get any actual mech fights before that. Animation quality also stopped being quite so inconsistent later in the show, although there are a few really low moments, like the awful Max/Milia knife fight [the episode immediately before has some really good animation, so I'm willing to bet that they just blew their budget].

best girl wins the MC bowl, after the show spends two episodes trying to convince the viewer that Minmay still had a chance -- two episodes that didn't fucking need to happen since they were literally just dithering around, not really advancing any plot
Hikaru is as dumb as a rock and probably didn't deserve anyone though.

Kamjin was a good villain. I liked him, even if he was basically just a sociopath and didn't have a real goal. Kind of wish the end was a little less anti-climactic [oh, let me bum-rush the Macross -- oh fuck, getting shot, aaaaaand I'm basically missing, and now we're dead THE END], and as much as I did enjoy the post-[post]-apocalypse section of the show, it really would have been better if it ended when the earth got fucked but they could rebuild.

and fuck Kaifun and Minmay lmao
Minmay gets shafted a bit too hard though, although most of it was just her own fault for being so god damn immature [and some of it was just that MC is dumb as a rock].
[edit]
Started Macross 7.
I've watched up to episode 6 so far. Nothing has happened yet. MC is a moron, but I like him.
The show looks pretty fantastic. I love the color palette. The music is great too.

[edit 2]
good lord, it is like 20+ episodes before the show actually starts moving forward with the main plot
that's not to say nothing happens [and watching Basara be Basara is a show in its own right], but holy balls that's some real "pacing" they've got there :P

spoilers:
Spoiler
Sivil shows up aboard City 7, speaking in 2 word sentences almost all time, apparently unstopped by anything other than Basara's orgasmic voice [seriously, she's possessing people and whenever he sings, she goes crazy and has to run outside and she starts having them come on to him], and sucking the Spiritia out of people.
SOUND FORCE... was just formed. Like, up until this point, Basara has just been a nutcase who lives on some bombed out city ship docked to City 7 who flies around in the middle of battles and ends up annoying everyone on the field. Now he's bringing his whole band along for the ride.
Gamlin is a pretty cool guy. I hope nothing too bad happens to him.

it's really jarring going from SDF's literally perfect Max/Milia relationship to now, even though it's been like 30+ years in story
really, Max seems to be getting the short end of the stick a bunch
as an aside, I find myself really missing just how cool folds looked in SDF, they're so understated here in 7 in comparison

I finished 0080:War in the Pocket a some week ago and my opinion of it remained consistent throughout. Not bad but if you don't like the kid it kinda ruins it a bit. Drawing and animation quality is good but it's not all that flashy or memorable. It's a pretty different feeling title than all the other Gundams and I don't dislike the pin-point focused storytelling as opposed to the grand stories usually being told.

With that said, I moved on to watch 0083:Star Dust Memories for the second time (first time was a few years ago, back in 2014 perhaps?) but my, oh my oh my oh my.
This.
This is what I like.
This is what I wanted, all along.

I think it's fair to say it was because of 0083 and 7th MS team being really good that I wanted to check out "old Gundam" in the first pace, but for me, nothing has really topped this yet as a complete experience.
The character art is great. Animation is great. Lots of action. Characters are not that annoying, for the most part. The weakest part is perhaps the soundtrack which sounds a bit MIDI-esque at times, for a lack of a better way of putting it. All the vocal songs are great however, albeit really cheesy (but in a good way).

The 5.1 mix available on the bluray is also really fun to listen to (although I only have a 3.1 setup for now).
I still have 1 episode left, but I am enjoying this almost as much as I did the first time through, so a big recommendation if you haven't seen it before. In fact, if you only have to watch one thing Gundam, I'd recommend this since while it's in the UC timeline, it does stand mostly on it's own with all main characters being new for this entry.

Oh, and the robots are really cool!
It's a fun mix of old and new, some really cool Zeon mobile armors and of course the "Dendrobium" Gundam.

Lastly, like the rest of the internet, I've been reading the Komi-san has communication disorder-manga and I greatly enjoy it.

The direction of the Goblin Slayer animation is absolutely wretched. It's like they ripped the soul out of something and presented an empty shell in its place. An example of leadership that's disinterested in the source material, and incapable of seeing the point.

Yeah, the directing feels really bland and generic sometimes.

I ended up dropping the slime isekai thing, too. It started out promising enough. Seemed to be self-aware and pretty funny. Unfortunately, it ended up falling into the exact same isekai trap that I was hoping it would give a good ribbing to. I lost track of the number of times I found myself saying, "How convenient". Mr. Slime has no problems or real trouble at all, ever, despite being a supposedly lowly slime, and his waifu just falls into his lap. Apparently, later on he gets a humanoid form and from that point it's not even distinguishable from any other generic wish fulfillment crap. This isn't even a spoiler, you can see his human form on the promotion artwork and in the OP. Oh well.

I'm close to dropping the zombie idol one, too. Feels like it peaked in episode 4, and has only been going downhill since then, with no new ideas and thinly veiled advertisements for real places and events in the town it's supposed to take place in. Too bad, it felt like it had a lot of potential, too.

I Got Reincarnated As A Slime? Lemme tell you about I Got Reincarnated As A Slime. I know all about I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, because I read all the things always. Ain't got time to wait decades for this "animated" crap.
Spoiler
So here it is, one of the most disgusting asspulls in all of isekai history:

Slime King has his own little slimey kingdom full of monsters and humans living their happy little monster and human lives. Then suddenly, BAM, a rival nation kills all his peoples. The only minutely important person, the fantasy waifu Oni who wants to bone him despite his lack of genitalia? DEAD. EVERYONE'S DEAD.

This triggers Slime King slightly and he goes full edge lord, and kills the people responsible through his amazing use of physics knowledge to create death lasers from the sky that can cut through anti-magic barriers. He uses their lives to promote himself into a Demon King, uses his bullshit Demon King cheat magic to bring all of his friends back from the dead, happy trails keep trucking on.
Spoiler
Also I lied and don't actually know what happens after this point.
It could be worse. Eh, I'm sure worse is to come. I await it with anticipation.

I really do like the inverse of these things, though. Where the protagonist is weak as shit, most of the world hates them - very lord of the flies. A Shaman Can't Be The Hero is the only significant one of these that isn't Korean (Dungeon Seeker is an edgelord comedy) and might actually get animated 10 years from now. Poorly. Probably with the same degree of "a kinder and gentler Blue Mr.Popo" type stuff they did with Gobbo Slayer.

The farces are hit and miss - the one with the furry wrestler is more niche than the gyaru one, for sure..

Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan (Club-To-Death Angel Dokuro-chan): With a name like that, how could you go wrong? This is another one of those OVAs that are absurd to the max, in line with Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemii. This one has a lot more extreme violence played for laughs, in the form of Dokuro-chan brutally murdering her live-in roommate with a giant spiked bat, and resurrecting him, every 10 seconds or so. Expect lots of perverse/gross-out humor, contorted faces, and general insanity that usually comes with these kind of shows.

Capricorn: This OVA is pretty much generic fantasy/sci-fi stuff with dragons fighting giant airships and doomsday devices etc. etc., but it's still pretty well done and has a more cartoony style than usual for the era (mostly due to all the anthro characters)

Bannou Bunka Neko-Musume (All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku): I had watched this back in the day, but figured I'd write about it now. It's about an android cat-girl (with a literal cat's brain inside) that runs around acting ridiculous, getting into all sorts of trouble, and fighting off a very rich, aggressive and pissed off ex-wife of her creator. Definitely a lot of fun.

Psycho Diver: This OVA is really a hidden gem IMO. There's a lot of scenes stretching for 25-30 seconds long that are just visuals with no dialogue. That doesn't mean there's no plot, far from it. It's about a group that uses some specialized equipment to dive into other people's memories. Highly recommended.

AD Police:
Knocked out all 3 of these one morning. Definitely lower production quality than Bubblegum Crisis, but grittier and as we all know, more adult-themed. Sometimes the love making seemed a bit tacked on and unnecessary, but hey... there are worse offenses in the medium. This probably could have been a good series had they had the money. It's basically Blade Runner the Animated Series with some shitty pop music, but other than a bit of cheese ball dialogue, it's pretty good. I had seen this ages ago, but forgot it basically. Same w/ Bubblegum Crash, which I guess I should watch again.

It's definitely a shame AD Police Files didn't get the same kind of budget. But of course, they ran out of money for BGC...

I kinda want to get ADPF on LD, just cause.

That much more focused narrative is one of the reasons I think pretty highly of this Gundam series. It doesn't have billions of characters or battles but the few that are here are actually important. It's very refreshing compared to the long Gundam series loaded with useless battles with no stakes whatsoever. I agree that you have to like the kid to really get the most out of it but I never thought he was annoying or anything. Quite the opposite actually, especially in a series where shitty female and/or kid characters abound. (For example, I don't even know how managed not to be bothered by Nina's inconsistent behavior in Stardust Memory that only exists to create artificial drama and tension)
And the conclusion is quite poignant and beautifully/hilarously ironic. Unlike the general consensus of the internet, I wouldn't say War in the Pocket is a tear-jerker, but the more personal scope of this OVA clearly gives more weight and consequences to your usual mech fights.

In comparison, I am watching Gundam X at the moment and am around episode 20 or so. It feels like it's just random event after random event with no really big overarching goal or objective. I mean, there's a "gotta catch'em all" one but it might as well not be there. There's some info on the previous war and stuff, but...meh, it's not that interesting. And of course I don't even really pay attention to the battles and don't even feel like I missed something.

The series also pissed me off so much in the very first 30 seconds when it recycled yet again the exact same plot points in so many other Gundam series. Federation VS Colonies? Check. Newtypes being the key to the end of the war? Check. Yet another stupid nonsensical colony drop operation where you just kill your own homelands in suicide attacks and hope it will somehow show how evil the enemy supposedly is? Check.

It was so bad I considered dropping it right there, but thankfully the few scenes of a post-apocalyptic society afterwards seemed a bit more unique, and the MC is quite fun and has a few tricks up his sleeves. The two adult pilots introduced a bit later are also fun to watch, and so far my favorite episode is one where there is a focus on the personal lives of these two, which is mostly detached from pointless mecha battles while still showing how their choice to be mecha pilots influenced their lives (and vice-versa).

Oh, and the newtype hax in this one doesn't bother me that much for some reason.
