Good additions... never heard of most of them but they had a great marketing team at least.

Gonna write a bit about Berberian in the movie thread - it's a divisive sort of film, very unhurried and open-ended, but anyone who enjoys Lynchian mundane surrealism, and has love for Foley work and general 1970s analogue film-making should dig it. At ~90mins it's relatively compact, I recommend it if you're in the mood for something offbeat.

Peter Strickland's The Duke of Burgundy also comes highly recommended. It's also decidedly more sexy. ;)

If you have a bit of time and some beastly PC gaming equipment at your beck and call, I would suggest taking a look at Cosmo D's weird freebie title, "Off Peak."
https://store.steampowered.com/app/467360/OffPeak/

It's got a lot of 70s Polish and other unusual posters plastered throughout. Can't say too much more about the thing, except that it is fun and Artistic.

Kinda arcade poster-esque. Could easily see an Elevator Action-esque caper based around that imagery. I know, time paradox.

Solyent Green, this movie mesmerized me when I watched it as a 7 or 8 years old kid ; what were my parents doing ?

Now I've done an image research and found this :

I find it interesting to think that the punk-rock band may have found its name here, rather than in some Marijuana induced delirium.

I can't vouch for this WW1-era adventure movie since i haven't seen it, but it certainly has one heck of a poster.

EDIT, had to post the soundtrack cover because the movie poster blew up into low res. Yuck. Lee Marvin's pensive stare gives me a shade of remembrance to Schneider's war weary face in Same! 8)

The exploding ship + biplane certainly adds to the association!

It's okay--very overlong like most of author Wilbur Smith's books. The director did another Smith adaptation with Moore two years before, Gold, but I haven't seen or read that one yet. There's one nuts scene with a giant stone wheel rolling down a hill with a man stuck on it. It's really crazy and has always stuck with me. Otherwise the "standout" is Moore doing espionage in brown face  . Best off watching Death Hunt with Marvin vs Bronson a few years later from the director and Dark of the Sun from 1968 by cinematographer Jack Cardiff. Way more lean and better than the book.

Holy fuck yeah  Dig those arcing YGWsplosions over the ship, too. Reminds me of a whole raft of vintage WAR IS HELL STG artwork, like Daisenpu, Jackal, and especially Hishouzame's overseas boxart:

Hell yeah, sick movie(s) by one of the sickest directors. Shame he's gone and done himself bad with some stinkers lately. Was actually reading about the book last week for The Driver. Supposedly it gets really fantastical in the end out of nowhere, unlike the adaptation.

You ever read the trivia for Hard Times? Supposedly Hill didn't like working with Ireland, whom of course Bronson requested. He went to Bronson's house after filming to try and work with him again. Bronson at the door refused to shake his hand! Real damn shame. Another lost classic out there in the ether of productions that never happened, like that Verhoeven and Arnold crusades movie. If I could have anything it would probably be that.

Damn, first I'd heard. :o Shame indeed, Hard Times is the best work Bronson ever did imo, or at least neck-and-neck with Once Upon A Time In The West.

This reminds me, I saw an incredible poster at a flea market, it was in a collection of a large stack of pulp horror advertisements.

Showed a gigantic blonde on top of the Empire State Building, and said "WHO IS SHE, WHY IS SHE GIANT, AND WHY IS SHE ON THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING?"

Since she was stark naked, I couidn't have considered getting it, but dang was it cool.

(Also, I did try to find it, but "pulp poster empire state building" was not very effective. :D)

Awesome poster! Although I would be hesitant to put up posters of films about Nazi soldiers on my wall.
The film conveyed very well what it may feel like getting an assignment that represents an almost certain death sentence. The soundtrack conveys this feeling as well.
But these are individuals that know nothing else than living under water, are under control of the government, so they do what they are destined to do. Very bleak indeed.

Well said!

Apparently, when they test-screened the film in the US, the audience cheered at the opening text, which details the brutally low survival rates of U-Boat crewmen. Then at the end, there was only silence. I don't know how true that is, but I can totally believe it. I had a great-uncle, my dad's namesake, killed in action in the Pacific, and I'd never have been born if they'd gotten my other granddad, on the other side of the globe, where U-Boats preyed on shipping vessels in the Caribbean. Even at multi-generational distance, and with such intimately-sketched characters, I couldn't shake a certain coldness to the crew; pure "them and us," despite pitying the poor bastards (and the men themselves having no love for their Nazi superiors; no more than I did for the unprosecuted war criminals behind the US/GB Iraq horror).

At the same time, the film's pathos is truly universal. I never felt it was a war-glamourising picture, despite the source novel's author criticising it as such. It's a punishing, grimy, exhausting treatment of armed service - for all the grit and valour shown, the enduring sentiment is one of terrible futility. I suppose the rare admiring shots of the U-boat skimming along to gallant music, the sea-sprayed sailors whooping and hollering with delight, are a little romanticising... but as someone whose paternal family was bombed in their houses by Nazi Germany, and whose maternal family were torpedoed at sea by them, I still don't think they're misplaced. They're a glimpse of innocent human potential and ingenuity, the wondrous machine given some reprieve from the horrid purpose men set it to. Warfare is only ever shown to be terrifying, agonising, and above all tragic, the film's overriding emotion a longing to be anywhere else; the men and humanity at large alike.

In that sense I consider it anti-war, if anything. Image

I really need to watch Das Boot. In Germany, among older folks it's kind of a classic, and it has a reputation of being a bit controversial (we take our past very seriously here), but all in all, people think it's anti-war. My mum was devastated when she watched it and loved it for it.

Many thanks for the insight! I could definitely see it having that reputation in Germany, both its quality and tone. In the Anglosphere, it's always been a fixture on critics' lists of essential war pictures, alongside stuff like Full Metal Jacket. If Top Gun is a recruiting tool to get young men manning machines of war, this must be its elemental opposite. It's not without levity or thrills, but they're very much that of the gallows kind; a decidedly universal "Humans, think about what you have done" piece.
