Re: Kickstarter projects of note
This one looks silly, but that's up my alley so I'm keeping an eye on it. Supposedly the devs released a demo to the press which was well-received, but appear to be holding it back until the project is funded for backers, potential and otherwise...I assume there's some logical reason or other to this, but as I'm sold on the theme but would like a deeper impression of how it plays it's a tad inconvenient, heh.
Re: Kickstarter projects of note
The ex-EA published stuff continues. Local sidescroller favorite James Pond is in line for a brand new title, with a physical copy option to boot: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gam ... nd-is-back
Note that this project still seems to be in the initial design phase where it's not even decided yet whether the game will be 2D or 3D. On the plus side, pretty much all of the original team is back so it's safe to say the style will be similar. However, the project definitely needs to pick up its pace to reach its goal.
Also, don't confuse this Kickstarter project with the other guaranteed James Pond revival where System 3 is remaking James Pond 2 (RoboCod)—the favorite of the series—for Wii U and 3DS next year: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/0 ... _and_wii_u

Indeed. After Mighty No. 9, Hyper Light Drifter has my attention more than any other new game coming up. It makes me think of Tron meets fantasy action RPG. Some teasing for the uniformed:Necronopticous wrote:Wow. That looks incredible. Backed.BulletMagnet wrote:this one
Also super happy it's not attached to Steam. I realize now days, Steam is sort of obligatory for PC gamers, but I venture into PC gaming very rarely. These guys making an amazing looking game that is also non-DRM makes me very pleased.

Yeah man, it really gives me a Cave Story vibe and even a little bit of A Link to the Past vibe. And that fuckin' art style just speaks to me.

Not really "noteworthy" (at least for me), but still too goofy not to mention.
Re: Kickstarter projects of note
The creators behind Boogerman are looking to create a 2D sidescroller sequel for computers and next gen platforms: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/boo ... video-game
One of the tiers will even include Earthworm Jim but as with the current trend, there's no physical version. It looks like they'll need some help to ensure the project makes the goal. I never thought the original game was well-received in the 90s (nobody I knew played it) but maybe its fans will get a kick out of it. Probably like many, I never played Boogerman much because it took its raunchy theme past the level of everyday comfort—where Earthworm Jim was probably the limit and The Ren & Stimpy Show was beyond that. Nevertheless, I support anybody promoting games with 2D art.
There's also a new bi-monthly US retro gaming magazine called RETRO in the works from the founder of GameGavel: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/soc ... game-magaz
It's attached to some popular names in the gaming press and could get funded with a last-week boost.

Last I checked it was headed in the same direction as the Mutant League and James Pond revivals.Ganelon wrote: It looks like they'll need some help to ensure the project makes the goal. I swear the sight of Boogerman just gave me a shitty 1990s mascot PTSD episode. My brain matter and skull fragments would be on the wall had I not slammed that tab shut in time. Where'd my booze go...

Re: Kickstarter projects of note
Does Boogerman actually have a fanbase? This is insane. I mean, I had the game growing up, and I've debated buying it again, but the smart part of my brain usually tells me otherwise.

I say we lock the creators of Boogerman, Earthworm Jim, and Eternal Darkness in a room together with some LSD in the coffee, and SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Probably worth a new thread, but I'll err on the side of caution.

Reminds me of early Prince of Persia where you totally forget that the stuff is made of chunky pixelated sprites because the animation is so smooth.Necronopticous wrote:Hyper Light Drifter combat gameplay video:

Re: Kickstarter projects of note
A random post at Digital Press. I asked for some more details but it looks like it might be promising.
Pro: Classic gameplay.
Possible negative: "Bite sized"
Seems kind of shady: Ripping off Capcom's name (although I imagine there's not a trademark on just "Ghosts 'n' Goblins")
Check out the URL at least.Hi everyone!
My name is Monty Singleton and I just posted in the introduce yourself post.
Thought you may be interested in a project I am leading since we are all classic gamers here. I collect a LOT of arcade stuff. For example, I had a guy disassemble a Stun Runner marquee and ship it to me. The control panel for After Burner (weighed like 30 pounds!) and Terminator 2 guns still connected to the control panel. I have Tron repro joystick as well. So, I'm a fan.
I'm on a mission to take my passion for arcade classics and reimagine them for future generations. Our first project is Ghosts 'N Goblins. If this sounds interesting to you: http://GhostsNGoblins.com
If this is in the wrong forum please delete or move. I don't think I'm breaking etiquette but I don't want to piss anyone off either.
Thanks,
Monty

Re: Kickstarter projects of note
A handful of video game projects I've had an eye on recently:
- You might have heard of Scale, where you solve puzzles by growing/shrinking things.
- Not much in terms of action in Beeswing, but I like the different art styles.
- You might have also heard of Paradise Lost, a stealth-ish game where you play as an alien specimen trying to escape a laboratory.
- Do I detect a Grapple Buggy tribute in Bullet Bros.?
- An inexpensive music-ish project by the Brawl in the Family guy.
- More pretty artwork. There is a demo of it if you want to toy around a bit.
- Finally, some nice sprite work in Treasure Bear.

Re: Kickstarter projects of note
In the trailer, it says they plan to pitch the game to Capcom as a new Ghosts 'n Goblins game, but will change the game if they don't get Capcom's approval. Apparently, they have one of the designers of F-Zero GX and Super Monkey Ball at the company, so there is a chance this could actually turn out pretty good.Ed Oscuro wrote: Seems kind of shady: Ripping off Capcom's name (although I imagine there's not a trademark on just "Ghosts 'n' Goblins")

Looks good. I like the pixelated gore. I particularly like the way your character moves.

Bugbear Entertainment, the creator of FlatOut (not to be confused with Burnout, a very similar series) as well as the developer inexplicably tasked for Ridge Racer Unbounded, is trying to fund its Next Car Game: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/147 ... h-attitude
This racer will be focused on demolition derbies, a la Destruction Derby (i.e. not normal driving). There's a boxed copy option for the atom-minded among us. Funding is currently not on pace to reach the project goal, perhaps because the "battle racing" genre has cooled off (for another example, the recent Twisted Metal seems to have fared poorly). If you want more convincing, Bugbear has a free retro demo to try out: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/147 ... sts/654899

They publish those awesome Carl Barks collections of Uncle Scrooge and Donald Duck comics. They are also publishing The Son of the Sun from Don Rosa, which is one of Kickstarter rewards. I have one of the Uncle Scrooge and one of the Donald Duck books. They are both hardcover and the paper is of very nice quality.Acid King wrote:Fantagraphics' founder Kim Thompson died a little while back and the company has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund their upcoming spring publications.
